How to rank up in the 2017 season

… which begins in 2016.

This season we’re doing a lot of new things, including moving the start date forward a month, letting you exclude your least-favorite position, introducing two separate ranked ladders (three if you count Twisted Treeline), and giving ongoing updates on queue health for 2017. You can consider this post as an all-encompassing, international guide for your 2017 ranked experience.

Timing

Flex Queue will be turned on right as preseason starts (coming with patch 6.22), with Solo/Duo Queue coming under a week later.

The 2017 ranked season officially kicks off during patch 6.24. Read below for details.

Position Preference Updates

This year, in addition to selecting a primary and secondary position preference, we're looking into the ability to exclude your least-favorite. We are currently running tests in LAN and LAS, but if it's seen to drastically impact queue health, we may not proceed with developing this feature. Just a heads-up!

Queues

Normal Draft will be retired at the start of preseason for all regions except North America, Europe West, and Brazil. Our goal is to offer the fewest number of queues that give unique experiences (so we can keep queues healthy) while keeping disruption low, and in all regions except NA/EUW/BR, normal draft had very low participation. In an ideal world, we’d like to retire normal draft in all regions.

Solo/Duo Queue makes its return. Queue up alone or with a trusted teammate and get to climbing. Tier restrictions still apply, and Challenger is still limited to solo only.

Flex Queue is the ranked queue that rewards more organized teamplay, allowing one, two, three, or five players (within one tier of each other) to queue up together. We have additional plans for Flex to evolve based on queue health (for example, we may turn 4s back on if enough solos are queueing up). Details below.

For all regions that already have Ranked Twisted Treeline, we’ll be transitioning it to a Flex Queue, where 1, 2, or 3 players (within one tier of each other) can queue together.

For Latin America North, we’ll be introducing Flex Twisted Treeline!

Placements & Seeding

Note: The start of season is a time to earn your rank on the ladder. You will be placed lower than where you ended the 2016 season, as a ladder reset means the highest possible rank anyone can land after placement games is Platinum I, which moves all of the ranks down.

You can play some ladder calibration games for Flex SR/TT during preseason, but we’ll still be doing a soft ranked reset at the start of the season. That said, games played during the preseason will have some impact on where you place at the start of the season.

Rewards

This year we introduced physical rewards for players at the very top of the ladder, in addition to the Victorious skin for anyone who hits Gold or higher.

For 2017, anyone who achieves Gold rank or higher in either Solo/Duo or Flex queue will receive the Victorious skin, along with an extra reward for those who manage the climb in both.

Our plans for 2017

2016 was a rough year for ranked enthusiasts and, regardless which queue you’ll prefer in 2017 (maybe both!), we’re going to keep an open line of communication about what’s happening behind the scenes.

First, we’re planning to launch Flex Queue with an IP bonus that will run through the first week of the season.

If Flex Queue doesn’t attract enough Solo/Duo players through the weeks, we will test other incentives, like higher-weighted position preference for solos, windowing Flex Queue timing, or just plain limiting Flex Queue to pure 5-person premades (this is already in place in some regions).

We’ll communicate queue health and future plans every few weeks for each region so you can see what’s on the horizon for your ranked experience.

See you on the Rift.

"In an ideal world, we’d like to retire normal draft in all regions."... Please no, i dont want to "fight" for my best role... that calling system in blind pick is the worst thing in League

We could remove both normal queue and re-introduce team builder as only normal queue.

In an ideal world, we’d like to retire normal draft in all regions.

Screw that.

If you feel the need to remove a queue, then remove Blind Pick.

Well, there is the warning.

There will probably still be hundreds of threads posted by people asking why their ranking was lowered after placements next season.

It would be nice if premade groups had higher odds of being autofilled compared to solo players (on a per-player basis). If they make up the majority of the team, they can more easily adapt and communicate to handle it.

Why would you remove normal draft ? I never liked Blind Pick and I feel that normal draft is the best Queue to practice ranked, as you get the actual drafting pick phase and you can try out some more difficult matchups. Happy to see it's going to stay in NA at least, Sorry for you guys that are losing this perfect mode

pls keep normal draft

Whulfmon11/8/2016, 6:46:00 PM144 votes

taking away normal draft is a terrible idea

What the fucking hell? Normal Draft is my most used draft, the fuck do you mean in an ideal world you'll remove normal draft for all regions? Not when my other options for Rift action is Blind pick & Ranked. I haven't played blind pick once since the new champ select went live (unless I'm with friends). I don't want to freaking fight with people over the roles or be delegated to Support all the time. And Ranked is nothing but stress & hell sometimes. And it's not a good place to practice things.

I know the lost of normal won't affect me thanks to my NA residency, but I don't like the message you're sending about my Rift home. And by home, I mean it's the best option of the 3 Summoner's Rift queue.

Not mentioned anywhere below.

If anything remove blind pick. It's possibly the most toxic mode in the game right now. As stated in another comment, I don't want to fight for my position to play. Ive had some recent experiences were multiple people auto locked and I get stuck playing a position I didn't want to, and that I fairly called first. As well as, being name called and swore at. Draft pick eliminates the fighting over the roles. Although it's required to have a certain number of champions to play in draft, it's a bigger improvement from blind pick. In conclusion, don't remove draft pick, if anything remove blind pick.

MCahalan11/8/2016, 7:00:46 PM86 votes

Remove blind que. Keep unranked draft. It's literally the best decision. Just make it so new players have 16 of the cheapest champions unlocked for free until they actually own 16.

Normal Draft stays or we riot, Riot!

NovaJirachi11/8/2016, 7:01:04 PM72 votes

I feel like normal draft should exist for practicing ranked, like ppl treating it more like ranked, so I don't understand getting rid of it. [slayer-jinx-unamused]

PhantomFenris11/8/2016, 6:29:44 PM68 votes

Well... I don't know if I'd ever play norms again if norm. draft got scratched off the list. I don't like fighting and arguing for a position I want to try or play...

Chesha11/8/2016, 6:55:40 PM66 votes

Why would you want to remove normal draft? It's perfect for ranked practice... I feel sorry for the poor saps who may come after its removal and then have to hop into ranked totally blindsided to how the hell you need to work the banning system (let's be real, blind and ranked metas aren't exactly the same)... Also I'm not a huge fan of the soft reset, for lower elo players (aka bronze) this is great, some people really shouldn't be there but it can be hard to carry yourself out (some people deserve to be there 100% though), but for players like me who finally made it back to gold or heck even higher elo players, this will be a headache. I'll be really angry if I do about as well as my placements this year and don't get gold. (For the curious I won all but one game). Even though I can hold my own against diamonds in a normals if I have my friends on Skype, I sure a hell wouldn't want a high diamond/challenger elo possibly on the enemy team in my placements. The ONLY way I would feel a little better about normal drafts removal, is if you had to play basically a "ranked practice". With this you would need to win 10 games before being allowed into ranked ques. This could be a requirement for new players, could be a requirement for everyone. You could even start it up before the season starts to give people enough time to pass through it.

Thunderbird33011/8/2016, 8:01:49 PM64 votes

Why the hell would you want to REMOVE Normal Draft? There are tons of people who don't want to play Blind, but don't want to play Ranked either. Draft has been a nice little "in-between" of Blind and Ranked--more serious than Blind, but less scary than Ranked. Video games aren't all about competition, y'know. Besides, plenty of people I know like to use Draft for practice or warm-ups for Ranked, since it's the same style but the stakes aren't so high.

Honestly, I think losing Normal Draft would make a lot of players lose interest in the game. The meta is so ridiculous that having to face some group of five out of, say, twenty broken champions would seriously hurt casual players, and for some players being forced into Ranked for even a chance at playing a fair game would be a SERIOUS turn-off.

What about Ranked Arams :) Everything still random. But Ranked.

Ferezilla11/8/2016, 6:57:07 PM54 votes

Why remove normal draft? I like being able to ban out champs even if it's a normal, plus I like the role selection system we have in place for draft. It's not fun having to argue and fight for roles in blind pick and it feels even worse losing the role you or your friends wanted to play just because that one guy "hurr i typed it first" or just instalocks. If anything you should get rid of blind pick.

SroDinger11/8/2016, 6:35:54 PM52 votes

Remove blind queue, no one takes it seriously

Gunnâr11/8/2016, 7:33:39 PM46 votes

Why would you remove normal draft? Blind pick is a horrible experience for solo players trying to practice 2 roles.

Eunson11/8/2016, 7:01:59 PM39 votes

If people wanted flex queue you shouldn't have to bribe them with extra IP to play it... You're generating false stats off this. People will play it for the free IP at the start (which is when you'll gather your stats) and it'll be false information.

TurquoiseYoshi11/8/2016, 6:42:03 PM35 votes

I really like this update, except the Normal Draft removal. Blind Pick is really weird and kinda sucks, especially when, for some reason, you client is the slowest and you always get support.

If we're gonna roll out a better Blind Pick system that hybridizes Normal Draft and Blind Pick, I'd be on board, but just cutting everything except it isn't all that great.

AndrewYang4Pres11/8/2016, 6:50:30 PM32 votes

Would it be possible to get a guarantee on your preferred role when in promos? I know they give you "one of your two preferred," but I think if you're a mid main you should 100% get mid if you're in a series. I would absolutely be willing to wait extra time for this feature.

GankhísKhan11/8/2016, 6:50:14 PM29 votes

You should retire blind pick instead of draft. Draft helps people practice + Get better game sense. Also, you should really leave flex queue out of rank. "We may bring back 4 man if there's enough solo". That's stupid, I've had a 4 man team surrender on me. Similarly, I don't want to jump into a duo with a 3 man queue. Leave them separate.Rank 5's or solo/duo. Not this in between stuff. Too many people are getting boosted at the same time now.

Quixaphid11/8/2016, 7:49:19 PM29 votes

The role calling champ select part of blind pick is literally the worst thing in all of league. Its the only truly awful experience in this game. If you want to get rid of draft, at least add new champ select to blind where you pick blind but your role is pre assigned. Or have only draft but disable bans, anything but blind.

Rakvir11/8/2016, 6:55:00 PM28 votes

So there is literally zero incentive for those in the lower rungs of Bronze to work on pre-season influence to placements because you are essentially conceding they will be Bronze V even if they ace 10/10 placements.

I am genuinely confused if this is a good or bad idea.

On one hand, one could argue it relieves performance anxiety as there's the concept that people might just adjust to the new season in a more neutral or positive light. On the other, you risk swarms of spiteful people who will go out of their way to troll honest players and disrupt THEIR attitudes which can quite easily trigger a chain-reaction/"ripple" effect that feeds a new cycle of people on perma-tilt for seemingly no good reason.
