A short while ago, there was discussion around making “rune bundles” to help out players who were just getting started on their tier 3 rune pages. After some thought, however, we came to the conclusion that we could do something easier…

On 9/29/2015, we’ll be putting the following tier 3 runes on sale permanently for 50% off:

Greater Mark of Attack Damage: 205 IP ⇒102 IP
Greater Mark of Magic Penetration: 410 IP ⇒205 IP
Greater Seal of Armor: 205 IP ⇒102 IP
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist: 205 IP ⇒102 IP
Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage: 1025 IP ⇒512 IP
Greater Quintessence of Ability Power: 1025 IP ⇒512 IP

The real sad thing is that these shouldn't cost anything at all and should just be available to anyone who plays. And while I don't make a habit of accusing RIOT of only caring about money, because I know fully that is not the case, I know the only reason we have to "purchase" runes is so RIOT can sell IP boosts. I don't agree with this and think it should change. Runes aren't something cosmetic that only boosts your ego. They have real in-game impact and don't see why they are viewed as being different from putting points into a talent tree.

Umm what world do you live in, because this is reality, and here in reality, Riot does only care about money. Think about it, why don't we just have every champion available from the very start like dota/hon/strife/any other moba? Why are skins only purchaseable with real money with no in-game alternative? Why does riot focus so much on releasing high-priced skins rather than addressing serious in-game problems like sated devourer shyv/yi 1v5'ing whenever they want? (one simple example) Simple reason is that doesn't directly earn any money for riot.

Riot is a business. In order to keep the servers up and their staff employed, they need to make profit. Riot has a very aggressive business model that they follow. Skins are purely cosmetic, meaning you DO NOT NEED them. Also, with any champ, they have their counters. If you do not want a MasterYi or Shyvana running around the map with a sated, counterjungle them hard. Also, by keeping wards on the map and playing passive when they gank, you are able to resist getting them fed. Some champs have a higher snowball potential than others. It is just how the game goes. If you do not like it, there is nothing stopping you from leaving.

At the end of the day yes you are correct but in the opposite aspect (Riot's view) they are also correct but, there is no in between and yes prices are way higher than they need to be all you buy for 5$ is a retexture of a champ where you pay 5$ for the original champ/texture and the if you don't want to spend money it takes two to three weeks playing seriously to get one 6300 champ. Over the summer I got a quite good collection, but i feel for just the basic use of that champ i wasted to much time grinding out to get it. They really need price fixes item 3078

I don't know what you consider "playing seriously," but I consider it as playing 8hrs~ a day, every day for that week (much like that of your high ranked players). Lets say its an average of 40 minutes per game, that gives us 12 games a day, 84 a week.

Winning a 40min game gets you about 100ip (before boosts) and losing gets about 50ip. So average that at like 75ip per game, that gives you 6300ip per week (not including Win of the Day). With the Win of the Day (assuming you get it everyday) you get 7350ip per week.

So you can get a 6300ip champ in about a week. But I do see your point on how that is outrageous.

(Seriously playing a game [to further expand my definition] means that it will be the main game you dedicate your time to. Thus that you can really only play one game seriously at a time).

The real sad thing is that the game itself should cost money. Companies deserve to get paid for the products they create. They compromised with their customers by limiting access to content in exchange for providing a free game. This gives them the ability to capitalize on the limited content.

However, because RIOT cares about more than just money, they decided to allow their customers to earn limited contents that affect gameplay performance, such as runes.

At the same time, the costs of runes also provides incentives for new players to stick to a limited pool of champions, and thereby giving them a better chance of "mastering" gameplay mechanics which leads to more enjoyable sessions.

Why do I feel RIOT actually cares about their player base? Because they've done things like permanently reducing the cost of core runes. Because to be honest, the old rune costs were just fine. My friends and I have all gone through the rune purchase phase, and I personally have all the runes I need and ~85% of the champions. I have not used a single RP buying champions. RIOT did not have to reduce the price of runes; they did this today, not for themselves, but for their player base. This small change probably did not help retain any current players nor introduce new players to the game. It also does not help them make any more money.

Riot makes a massive amount of money thanks to player support. It's been proven, that the free-to-play structure can actually make a great deal of money. It's not good will, it's good business. And unlike games that have say a purchase price of 60 bucks and no micro-transactions, this game can continue to make money incrementally.

This isn't a critique on Riot at all by the way. There are sound business decisions that go behind a lot of the choices they make, decisions that have nothing to do with "caring" about you. They deliver a quality product, and we pay them for it.

Also, you say you never bought RP for champs, you didn't mention skins. If you haven't supported their product by buying skins, boosts, RP, then that kind of makes you a hypocrite.

Not really. I mean, I get your point, but if you ask anyone in the F2P business they can tell you that without a robust community of dedicated players (even free ones) a game doesn't work. All the free players help make a game that the spenders are willing to spend on.

If he really has bought all that content without spending a single RP on champs, it means he's been playing a LONG time, and has likely helped make the game enjoyable for lots of people who did spend money.

You guys do realize that IP is Free. You don't have to pay money to earn IP. You don't even have to pay for the IP boosts. Yes it takes longer without IP Boosts but still the IP is FREE to get champions. You're not spending any money for it only thing you have to spend it on is skins and icons and stuff which is OPTIONAL. You don't NEED a skin to play a champion. or a game. Also the games does start you with 400 Riot points of course it's not enough to get anything but it still nice to welcome the new player to the game.

If you guys want to keep the game free, money is need besides Riot isn;'t forcing people to spend hundreds of dollars on the content. It's the players choice. Not sure why people complaining about it but software isn't cheap, having a good server isn't cheap, having well qualified employees to make the game experience enjoyable isn't cheap. Like all games you have to pay money for something. There isn't a single PC game I can name that gives you EVERYTHING for free. And last time I checked Dota doesn't have everything free for their game. I wish people will stop comparing Dota to League. They are two different games and if you don't like League don't play it.

Simple.

i've been playing league for about a year, i had some breaks and didnt involve myself in runes until i was level 30 and owned some champs that i knew i loved, i have about 1 and a half rune pages but im not entirely NEW to league, so this can help a more specific demographic as well, none the less this was a good choice by riot to help anyone who needs it

this would help so much and i do think the rune pages are quite expensive for what they can do, i mean you can buy one of the most expensive champs with that ip but we spend it for getting runes to play jungle or top or something we dont normally do and i think that it shouldnt be that expensive to do, so i think this is a wonderful idea and riot pls item 2054

Also, what happened to those price reduction on specific champions when new ones come out?

I think we should have the option to sell runes (for a low amount of IP) since Rune Combiner is dead.

Or be able to buy some for friends using IP, maybe even trade your old ones (with an IP fee for both options. e.g. plus 50-100 IP per rune).

This doesn't really seem fair. I have all of these runes, at 9 & 3 sets. You should consider refunding at least 50% of the IP per rune. Like you do with the legacy skins RP. I've spent a lot of IP trying to make the best rune pages. item 3151

Although I may be sad that I essentially wasted over 1250 IP, I still say, thanks a bunch Riot. This will make it easier on players to pick up runes. I am happy for this.
