Dev Blog: Building a Better Bio

Riot·10/20/2015, 10:03:04 PM·6 votes·42,695 views

During the Bilgewater: Burning Tides event, you may have noticed we took the opportunity to update the bios of key champs featured in the story: Twisted Fate, Graves, Miss Fortune and Gangplank. (And if you didn’t, go read ‘em now – we’ll wait for ya!)

This was a bit of an experiment with a new format for doing bios: half traditional bio, half short piece of fiction. We really wanted to dive a little deeper with those bios – getting into the champions’ heads, and adding extra depth.

We also wanted to see what you guys thought of them before we plowed blindly ahead. The overall impression has been really positive, so we are now looking to start working on new bios for all our existing champs – though this will take some time!

Bios back in the day

Some of our older bios are starting to show their age; they’re getting a little creaky around the edges, and some of the details are a little fuzzy. Back when they were first written, the world of Runeterra was a rather different place than it is now – the world and its civilizations were just starting to get fleshed out. Those were Runeterra’s formative years, when we were still getting our own heads around the world, its history, and the people who inhabit it.

The Foundations team (essentially, our world building team) has been doing lots of work over the last few years to really get a solid understanding of Runeterra (check out this Foundations blog on Bilgewater to get a little insight into what the team does).

Just as our splash images have evolved (read about that here!), it’s time for our biographies and character backgrounds to do likewise.

Rito plz don’t destroy my beloved champ

We know you guys love your champs. We love them too!

So, what’s our goal with these updated bios? We want to strengthen the core thematic of the champs, and further explore their motivations, personality and background. For most of our champs, that’s simply adding more depth to what’s already there, and really getting to dive into what drives them.

Bios are also a great opportunity to add a little color to our champs – to give examples of them doing the stuff that makes them who they are, rather than just saying it, as in the classic ‘show don’t tell’ mantra.

For example, we could say, “Gangplank is the meanest pirate of them all”, but it’s much more effective to actually see the dastardly things that helped forge his black reputation. So, in the Gangplank bio we fleshed this out with mentions of the temples he’s sacked in Ionia, the Demacian villages he’s razed to the ground, and the time he stole Swain’s personal flagship. These little snippets are also potential story hooks – something other Rioters (and players) can use as a spark to explore further (e.g. “You know, Gangplank sneaking into Noxus and stealing Swain’s ship would make a cool story. Hmmm…”).

As we work to expand out our bios, the most important thing is that we hold true to the core essence of why players love that particular champ.

Which champs next?

Having landed on a style of bios that we were pretty happy with, the next question after Bilgewater was which champs to tackle next.

Long-term, we are planning to re-do the bios for all our existing champions, but that’s no small task – we have over 125 champs now, after all. Getting them all done to the level we want isn’t going happen overnight. So, we started having a think about which champions we wanted to do next.

Which leads us to…

The Harrowing

One of the things that we all wanted to know after Burning Tides: The Reckoning was what happened next.

While that story focused on TF and Graves (and we are looking to explore their next adventure together soon…), one of the things we really wanted to see was what would happen if the Harrowing rolled into Bilgewater while the port-city was still tearing itself apart in the aftermath of Gangplank’s upheaval. One of the writers on Foundations, Graham “Dinopawz” McNeill, took up the challenge and started putting pen to paper (well, digits to keyboard) to tell that story – Shadow and Fortune – which you’ll be able to read very soon.

It was around this time, too, that Foundations was deep-diving into the history of the Shadow Isles, exploring the tragic events that led to its formation. Many of the key Shadow Isles champs featured in this history, and as some of them would also be making an appearance in Shadow and Fortune, it seemed like the obvious choice to tackle them next. We didn’t get to every Shadow Isles champ, unfortunately, but we’ll come back to the others as soon as we can.

A new way to view the champ bios

As well as working on writing new bios, we’ve also been exploring how to present them in a better way. We wanted a page that would do justice to the champions, and we think we have come up with a pretty cool step in the right direction (which you’ll see soon with the updated bios for Mordekaiser, Kalista, Hecarim, Thresh and Karthus!). Again, this is a bit of an experiment, and we’d love to hear what you guys think. If this is something that everyone really likes, then we’ll be looking to start rolling this out across our other champions as we write them.

So, when will my champ be done?

The next batches of champions we are looking at exploring are the Shuriman champions and those associated with Mount Targon. After that… we’ll have to see. Let us know if there are some that you really want to see updated.

We hope you guys enjoy the new bios for these Shadow Isles champions. Please let us know what you think of them – and which champs you want to see next!

Cheers!

Yorick Oh, I didn't see you there Evelynn, how's it goin?

Evelynn Well they nerfed my kit. Again. What else is new, amirite?

Yorick Well they will come back for us right? I mean we can't just continue to float around the Shadow Isles without having a reason to be here right?

Thresh Oh hello you two, what a fabulous day to be dead hmm?

Evelynn Well I'm not actually dead, I'm just a woman who got transformed into a deadly assassin, who can drain the life essence of anyone mortal with ease.

Thresh Oh how fascinating, let me know when you actually have a backstory instead of "mysterious dark magic girl", I'll hold my breath.... Oh wait no I won't, I'm the lord and master of all undying souls, I have no lungs ahahahahahahaha

Well, while I'm forever waiting on any Riot love for Yorick, there is one champ I'd like to know more about...

Aatrox

Like, what the hell is a "Darkin?" Are there others like him? What does he actually do?

Also, Singed. His background story's been broken for over 3 years, so fix him already for the sake of Fuuuuuuu-dge

RITO THESE ARENT BIOS THESE ARE 2-3 SENTENCES BEING CALLED A BIO

ChroniclerC10/26/2015, 9:52:19 PM28 votes

A: Please no more of the two-sentence "bios". Also also, please don't have bios that tell us nothing that isn't already said clearly by their in-game actions and abilities (Gnar) or that outright clash with their in-game actions and abilities (Ezreal).

2: With the death of the Institute of War and the removal of the League of Legends from the game League of Legends (Yes, I'm still mad about that stupid decision, but I'll move right along), many champions are now story-orphans with few or no links to other characters or the nations of Runterra. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking of people like Kayle, Morgana, Taric, Fiddlesticks, Jax... I could keep going. You've also made the same mistake with more recent champions like Bard; Just because they are a figure of legend doesn't make them any good for stories in League of Legends, especially when they exist in their own little isolated bubble, never interacting with other characters.

Really hyped about the Diana Leona Pantheon love that is incoming. A lot of potential with the Greek-like culture implied in the lore, as well as the issues between the Sun and Moon guys (don't remember the tribe names). Could we see some more development on Kayle and Morgana , because as far as I know, they are just extradimensional creatures who are sister and hate each other. Are there more of them? Where? What are they doing, playing poker and drinking non-alcoholic beverages and not smoking cigars? (item 3070 Graves item 3070 ) Just my two cents, but thus far you guys have done a phenomenal job at creating deep characters and fleshing them out. Keep it up!

I have played League since 2009. I have seen many skins come and go, many new champions released (I remember the hype put behind Riven), maps have changed, summoners have gotten more serious about the game and many of my friends have quit because they no longer feel that you work for the players.

I remember Cassiopeia having such an in depth lore that came to life as you read it, then you decided to change it when Azir was in place to come out. The lore is what some of use look forward to. To change a lore is to erase the love that we have for these champions. Especially when they go from having a full story to have 2 lines on a page, if you are going to change the lore, channel the so called love you have for the champions.

It is okay to change a story a little if someone new comes along that the champion knew some time ago, but to change it completely to make a new story, no.... We always knew Nasus had a brother, when Renekton came out his story made perfect sense and worked so well with his brothers that we felt their pain.

Katarina and Cassiopeia no longer seem like they are even related when they are sisters! I have had to tell Cass' original story to so many new people because they knew nothing about her. So Riot i beg of of you. Show us truly how much you "love" the champions youve put countless hours into.

Mordekaiser killed an old man in his lore and captured his soul to do his will but Graves can't have his cigar.

Rito - "We want to strengthen the core thematic of the champs, and further explore their motivations, personality and background. For most of our champs, that’s simply adding more depth to what’s already there, and really getting to dive into what drives them."

Except for trundle. For trundle, you took everything that we loved about him deleted it, and gave him a completely new bio that's just pointless and boring. "He's a troll who found a magic ice club so he can smash things!" Yea, that's totally a much more intriguing backstory than a troll cursed with a disease that literally rots his flesh at the same speed that he regenerates it, locking him in a cycle of pain and renewal. Traditional Trundle was one of my favorites and I loved him... but I shouldn't really be complaining. At least he got a traditional skin, unlike Gangplank and Sion.

I know that you guys are working really hard to take old champs and point them in a direction that's deeper and more interesting, but some of my favorite champs had their personalities trampled into the dust, and I'm honestly scared that the trend of "Fuck the old canon and re-write everything!" will continue. I personally loved Sion as a goofy axeman whose undeath let him be careless, and gangplank the butt pirate always made me laugh. I know that fighting is a serious thing, but trundle, Gangplank, and Sion represent the much needed comic relief that's been disregarded as of late.

Rito - "As we work to expand out our bios, the most important thing is that we hold true to the core essence of why players love that particular champ."

I really hope you mean it this time. I don't think I could live with the world if you made Fiddlesticks or Fizz serious.

I did love the update on Bilgewater Champs Lore with that event. Please don't do another Shurima 2 sentences long update to lore and you will be golden Rito

Smilee9010/26/2015, 11:18:35 PM10 votes

Personally, I'd like the see the rewriting of old lore stop. Like I get it some people don't fit, (Udyr for example) but then just lump them in with another champion's lore rework? There is already an abundance or lore that is available to work with. Like if we go back to Udyr and the Freljord rework, Tyrndamere was nowhere to be seen, but Udyr got lumped in?

Personally I'd like to see more "next chapters" take champions that have lore, and expanded it, make it relevant again. For example, Poppy, tragic back story, solid reason for joining the league. Have the next champion released be from Noxus and have Poppy recognize her fathers assassin. Boom, simple, do a cool story mode like with the GP rework. And you bring back multiple champions while showcasing champions that are old or have just been reworked.

I never understood why the lore's got so much shorter when they were remade. This mentions Graves Twisted Fate and Gangplank but their lore is like 2-3 sentences each. A lot of lore was put out with the Bilgewater event, is it really that difficult to put it in their lore?
