Clash Beta launches in North America

Riot··8 votes·207,438 views

On April 9, team creation opens in-client (check the new Competitive tab!) to test Clash - League’s new competitive mode for premade teams. We’re going to run this technical beta in North America over the next few days, and we need your feedback.

Here’s the schedule:

DAY 1 DAY 2 DAY 3
Date Friday, April 13, 2018 Saturday, April 14, 2018 Sunday, April 15, 2018
Lock in phase 5:00 pm or 8:00 pm (PDT*) 5:00 pm (PDT) 5:00 pm (PDT)
Games begin 5:30 pm or 8:30 pm (PDT*) 5:30 pm (PDT) 5:30 pm (PDT)

* There are two “flights” for Friday’s games. Pick the start time that suits your team! You can only participate in one flight on Day 1.

You can find the most important stuff to know about the beta test in the video above, and a full FAQ about how a Clash tournament actually works below.

See you on the Rift!

A note from the devs

Thanks for your interest in testing out Clash before a worldwide release! So far, we’ve run beta tests in Vietnam, EUW, EUNE and Turkey, and gotten a lot of great feedback from those communities. Now in North America, Clash is reaching a more final state (but we’re not quite there yet).

You can still expect some jankiness, some bugs, and unfinished UI elements, so please let us know what you like, and what feels bad. We’re still actively tracking a bug where players don’t make it to champ select, but the rest of their team does. If you experience this, we’d really like to hear from you in particular! We’ll send out a survey after the test too, so make sure you have a valid email attached to your account.

We’re setting up a Discord server for the duration of the week. You’ll be able to give us feedback, report bugs, and find potential teammates. We can’t promise we’ll respond to everything, but we’ll read it all for sure. Join the server now at http://discord.gg/league-clash-beta-na!

What is the Clash Beta?

The Clash Beta is a weekend of tournament play for players of all skill levels, taking place between Friday, April 13 and Sunday, April 15.

When you enter, your team will start in a 4-team bracket with players of your skill level. If you win both matches, you will be promoted into an 8-team bracket with all the other winners, held the following day. Coming out on top here will put you into a 16-team bracket for a shot at taking home the top prizes on the last day.

You can start your Clash journey in a 4-team bracket on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, but only teams that enter on Friday and play each day can win the entire tournament. If your team is eliminated, you’ll receive your rewards and drop out, but you can re-enter the next day (with a new ticket) to play in a new bracket with its own rewards.

On each day, there’s also a consolation (lower) bracket so teams who lose the first match can continue playing. Those teams won’t progress to the next day’s play, but they’ll face off against other teams that lost in the first match to earn more/better prizes.

To participate, every member of your team will need to lock in, during a 30 minute window before the first match begins. If any members of your team do not lock in, your team won’t enter into the tournament.

You are guaranteed to play a minimum of two matches each time you enter.

If you’d like to read the ins-and-outs about the format of Clash, check out the support article.

Creating your team

To join or create a Clash team, you need to have:

  • Reached level 30
  • Completed placements in at least one Summoner’s Rift ranked queue
  • Attained at least Honor level 2
  • Verified your League account by SMS (this is a new Clash-specific feature)

Each team has a captain who is responsible for adding or removing members, and setting up their team for Clash. Captains can start inviting their squad from Monday April 9, and in the Team screen, they’ll pick a team logo, tag and name to represent their team for the weekend.

Clash has a unique Tier matchmaking system, meaning you’ll always face teams that are around your skill level. There aren’t any restrictions on rank within your team, but if you group up as four bronzies and one diamond, prepare for the big leagues. You can read about how it works here.

When you enter into a bracket, you will compete with your team for the whole weekend, win, lose or re-entry, so make your best squad!

There is a substitute system in Clash, but you can only substitute one player per day, and they are only with your team for that day’s play. You can read more about substitutes here.

SMS Verification and Smurfing

When signing up for Clash, we need you to register your account to a cell phone number through the SMS Verification process. By tying your account to a cell phone number, there’s an extra layer of difficulty for players who might want to bring their smurfs to a Clash tournament. This is one of a few ways we’re trying to keep matchmaking fair for everyone. You’ll only need to go through this process one time, and after that point your account will be linked to that cell phone number.

The SMS verification process is basically:

  1. You open the SMS Verification dialogue Clash in the Competitive tab of the client or through Settings.
  2. You’ll be prompted to enter your account password, just so we can make sure it’s really you attaching this phone number.
  3. We’ll ask you to enter your Country Code, followed by your ten digit phone number. The country code for the US and America’s BFF, Canada is “1,” and you can find codes for other countries HERE.
  4. We’ll send a text message to your phone with a secret code - enter that, and your account is now SMS verified. If you try the Konami code, nothing happens. Womp-womp.

For more info on SMS verification and smurfing check out the support article.

Game day

Before the match begins, you’ll encounter several features that should help you figure out the best strategy to claim victory. First up is the scouting page, where you can check out stats and info about your opponents to help your pick/ban strategy.

Next up, in champ select, you’ll be using the draft format you may have seen from the LCS - two ban phases, and two pick phases. Don’t get caught off guard!

Oh, and all champions are unlocked in Clash, so don’t worry about figuring out that complicated three-person trade from solo queue.

Clash also features a “sudden death” mode to keep matches at a fixed length. Read more about it over here.

Tickets

To keep Clash a high-stakes tournament, you’ll need a ticket to enter. You can get tickets a few ways: They’re available in the store for 990 BE or 215 RP, and you can also earn one from completing a mission this week (by winning four games of Ranked Flex).

You can choose 1 ticket or 5 tickets each time you enter. The overall Clash experience is the same, but with 5 tickets you’ll earn much better prizes. Ticket purchases with BE are limited to three this week (so you can still enter every day if you lose out). You can find more of a breakdown of tickets here.

In the future, we’ll likely be changing the way you can earn or purchase tickets based on your feedback, so stay tuned.

Prizes

Rewards in Clash come in three main forms: Victory Points, capsules and icons.

Victory points and banners

Every time you win, you’ll earn Victory Points which are used to unlock Banners, a new item which shows up on Summoner’s Rift! Find out more about Banners and Victory Points here.

Win or lose, you’re always going to take home a Clash Capsule. In each capsule, you’ll find an XP boost and a new logo for your next Clash team, as well as rewards that scale based on your performance and however many tickets you entered with. If you’d like to know roughly what you can expect out of every capsule, check out our handy Capsule Guide.

Icons

Finally, winning a (winner’s) bracket will net you an exclusive Clash Beta summoner icon:

And that’s about it

Give us feedback in the Discord channel and we’ll try to be available to answer your questions. Start getting your team together and we hope to see you in the NA beta from April 9 to 15!

Making people be honor level 2 is kinda stupid. Most people who will participate in clash want to play with friends so they normally wont even flame.

Tegu24 votes

Exactly this, absolutely no reason for honor level 2. People flame random teammates, not friends.

Hines5773 votes

Then don't flame and be the cause of a toxic community. Easy.

Veoch20 votes

Well I think it is different for each case. For me: My account has barely ever had a punishment to it besides 2-3 months ago I had a one bad game and received a 10 game chat restriction. Since then I have been trying to grind to Honor Level 2, it is very difficult, I played over/around 300 games in which I received many honors, got my rewards back, I've gotten a lot of key fragments since then but still Honor Level 1. The grind is just very difficult and now I am locked out of a tournament I have been anticipating for months because of 1 10 game chat restriction... Also I feel like if your playing with a pre-made than why the Honor Level 2 requirement? I understand with a group of randoms but pre-made sounds kind've iffy.

Adãm22 votes

You don't get a chat restriction from one game of flame unless you said some really bad stuff

The Birch3 votes

I don't really know how you honor level 1 players don't understand. There's one easy way to not let that happen: don't get involved. That's it. There is a stark difference between a toxic flaming attitude and excited banter.

ChaoxsisReturns11 votes

i will get angry at you 100% of the time if youre fooling around in my ranked game

no offense to you Hines57, but youre bronze 3. i have played years to get to the level i am and im trying my damnedest to hit diamond. you might not be able to tell, but at platinum you can EASILY tell when someone is fucking around. bad games aside (which you can also distinguish at my level) if you fuck around and try to lose you deserve all of the rage. not only do you waste at LEAST 30 min of my time (match finding, champ select, 20 min surrender cause they dont do it at 15) but you also strip away my points.

TheUnførgiven5 votes

People who are new to the game( 2 years at least) dont understand how much time some of us have put into this game. And to have some child who barely plays and says oh i dont care or this is my second account it really pisses me off.

Owen7246 votes

It's not to make sure that you don't flame your friends, it's to punish you for being a toxic player with random people.

Rabid Meese70 votes

A lot of toxic people will not hesitate to make the game miserable for their team, team mates, or the enemy team with abusive and berating language. Sorry, if someone's going to flame and be a toxic piece of garbage, they don't deserve any sympathy. Frankly, I'd prefer it if they were given less slack - I wish it was way easier for a flamer to get banned from certain game modes, chat, ranked play, etc. for being a trash bag of a human being.

AriCei38 votes

If only the banning system actually differentiated those people.

Rabid Meese24 votes

Ya know, one of my favorite things in games is to surf the forums and see people talk about how they were banned for doing nothing wrong. They either turn into pure toxic sludge in the comments or occasionally a mod will share some chat logs indicating how toxic the person is. You never see them say 'oh crap man, my bad.'

I take the same approach to this. If the vast majority of the playerbase doesn't have the issue, it seems to indicate that the system is functioning.

The Once Ier24 votes

I have been banned. It was horrible I was a dumb stupid 14 year old and I was mostly banned for leaving then my final ban and the perma was because of toxicity. And boy did I deserve it, however I had around $700 in the game and it was depressing to lose it all so I took a long break. I came back to it after season 6 was about to end and leveled up a new account. I then got gold my highest rating yet. And I was so excited, I have not bounced back to my old ways other than a really bad week and got a chat ban however I feel I have become a more mature and nicer player in the league community.

Meister Reaper10 votes

tbh im kinda sad im almost honor 1 because i learned from my mistakes but the system is so hard to get out of once you are honor 0. I mean I understood what I did but its so hard to climb up in the honor system.

cristiandinunzio20 votes

How does that sound fair, " it's to punish you for being a toxic player with random people." the punishment is the 2 week ban or the 40 game chat restriction, players should not be kicked out of community events because they had a 10 game chat restriction 3 months ago. Either way if all people that are under honor level 2 don't get to play that means even more smurfs on top of how many there already will be.

CepaXu12 votes

I got punished for saying "shit" twice in a completely non-toxic manner. So, guess I'm locked out of the fun for that.

Votable Jester47 votes

I highly doubt that. Cursing is completely allowed. It's only if you use those words to insult someone that you get punished.

If you truly were punished unjustly, take it up with player support, they're generally pretty helpful.

Tegu22 votes

They're very very helpful with everything except any type of penalty involving "toxicity" whether you were toxic or not.

SplitSouls21 votes

i duo a lot with a friend an he doesn't chat in game but he got banned after a game cause the 3 other teammates didn't like the champ he played an got banned for a week. so sure the system works great

WanedSwain3 votes

all champs are unlocked. all you need to be is honor level 2 (base level) and be ranked. this punishes nobody.

karmaislegend7 votes

its punishing me for something that happened 4 months ago in one game

Lethena5 votes

I've been occasionally toxic in games where I get super tilted, and have never had an issue because of overwhelmingly positive/honors in most my play.

This doesn't happen because of a one time thing. You were punished for that one event, but you were reported multiple times before that for toxic behavior.

blankupai21 votes

I mean I got chat restricted in early December for saying a bad word to my friend in game. I am still honor level 1 checkpoint 1. I feel like I should be able to play clash, but the slope getting back from punishment is wayyyy too steep. I've been playing constantly too (lvl 100).

MythicFlare33 votes

Riot doesn't give a crap. My account has NEVER even had a chat restriction for all of 5 years and I have gotten every icon for being in the top 10% of the most honorable in the game and they wouldn't even listen to my issue on how I got hazed in a flex queue where they banned all my adcs because their last adc fed. I got a 2 week suspension, lost my end of season rewards and honor. All I asked was to know they were punished and they told me "its against their policy" and when I mentioned the Report feedback system they just tell me "It's a rare case" yet me and my friend got 5 back to back in a span of 2 days. They don't give a flying fuck about "Honor" they just throw shiny things in your face to entice you.

Master OhShyt29 votes

Requiring level 2 honor provides an incentive for players to behave properly overall in every game, not only with friends. If you have trouble getting honor, then you are the problem.

Here's tip #1: Don't say anything unless it's positive, especially to random players unless you're asked (99.99% people don't ask). This is taught in college for interpersonal communication!

Legãcy34 votes

bet $100 they still won't honor you after the game... happens to me..... a lot.

#RespectSupports

NYVH4 votes

I can't say I can relate to that... I had honor lvl 5 on 3 accounts last season and am heading there this year again while playing about 4x a week and maining support and jungle for the most part...

DeleteMyMeat22 votes

This is the stuff I hate seeing. This makes riot think the player base thinks like this. Chat is not for positive comments only. It is used for banter and communication. If you don't like someone then just mute them. Getting honor is actually a problem if you only play 5 mans with friends as honors from them are basically worthless. I play league to have fun and got chat banned for being admittedly toxic, months later and I haven't moved at all because snowflakes like you make riot think that toxicity is the biggest plague in this game. Gamethrowers and AFK's are far more important. I can't stop them from ruining the game, if a toxic person is ruining your game just mute them. Can we please have riot focus on the important stuff? Not banning people and blocking them from new features because they insulted someone.

NeaceIsLord68 votes

I find it hilarious that the biggest complaint is being honor level 2...

Well, we don't want you toxic players in the league making it crappy for everyone else...

Really, if you aren't Honor Level 2 you REALLY need some self control.

Zond Lilac15 votes

You can get demoted to below honor level 2 for afk. happens quite frequently don't be so toxic to people just because they don't have a solid honor level only makes the whole situation worst tbh

Jeddy01754 votes

If you're AFKing enough to get demoted below honor level 2, then you're probably not in the best spot to be playing Clash in the 1st place. Whether it be intentional (you rage quiting or giving up on the game) or unintentional (internet issues or life constantly pulling you away), you probably shouldn't be playing this or else you could ruin it for other players.

Ríce Eater13 votes

THIS. If you are somehow afking to the point that your getting demoted then that should raise your teammates concerns to your playing habits.

team is pepega42 votes

yeah honor level 2 is a pain ive been stuck at 0 after my 2 week for 5 months and its getting frustrating. I have not flamed in my past games except give advice like positioning etc. and I really wanted to play with my friends but since im not honor level 2 I can't. :/

RiotRiot NaKyle54 votes

As long as you've cleaned things up you should be able to bounce back to Honor level 2 over time. We buffed the climb rate a few patches back.

booty toucher28 votes

I've been at honor 1 after about 500 games and 3 months. Stuck at checkpoint 1, literally impossible to get back to honor 2 for this... Really disappointed, i've been following clash since you guys released the beta for EU and have been super pumped but it looks like I cant even play in it now. Depressing af.

Glaedr17 votes

Either you're heavily exaggerating or you're really not doing anything to actually get it back up. I've played maybe 200 games total this entire season and I'm one checkpoint away from honor 4 . I can't magically pull up your chat logs, but I'm very sure you are doing something wrong.

RlCE5 votes

I was in this situation due to a ban towards the end of last season, so I think I can understand why some people are frustrated. However, I do not sympathize with those who are actually toxic and say that playing with friends shouldn't involve their behaviours outside of clash mode. However, the comment above isn't all too far from the truth at all. The problem was that going from the status of dishonorable to honor level 1 took an EXTREMELY long time (for me it was about 3-4 months), which led them to patch it in order to make it easier. I do not know how much easier it is now. Other than that, getting from Honor level 1 to 2 should only take a month or so if you play a decent bit and refrain from being toxic. Therefore depending on how much someone plays, someone could have been banned many many months ago for a slip-up and they are now locked from an exciting new game mode. From that perspective, you can kind of understand some the frustration of a very small minority.

PickIe Rickkk7 votes

i was chat restricted last june and chat restricted at season start and i still havent moved in honor :)

Mätthew37 votes

why do we have to be at least honor level 2? I've been stuck at level 1 for about 5 months with no sign of progress and really want to contest.

OGDancingBurrito27 votes

Dont be toxic, i am almost honor 4.:3

Romenji16 votes

I had over 4k total honors before the system change. One 7game chat restriction because a 4man premade reported me because they didn't like me and now I've been at 0 honor for well over a thousand games and hundred or so onwards honors.

Hines5726 votes

That's probably the only reason. For sure.

ChiefPyroManiac55 votes

Probably so we don't get forced to play with or against toxic people. Don't be toxic, and you wouldn't hit lvl. 1 in the first place.

Tegu18 votes

I don't think you understand how easy it is to get demoted in honor level. My friend called someone an "idiot" and that set him down an honor level and now he can't participate in a fun game mode with friends. It's just counterproductive too when the toxic player only flames their team, but if you're not playing with randoms there isn't an issue.

DarnedDragoon44 votes

I have no sympathy for your friend. Frankly it's too easy to get honor.

Jobless Jester19 votes

these are the people who bait others into being toxic so they can report them this is the real problem riot tilt baiters and the toxic gameplay

Ultîma3 votes

I think what he means is that, even though he's exhibited reformed behaviour in 5 months (allegedly), he hasn't been able to meet the honour requirement. In all honesty, it's true that honour is a very steep climb and it sucks for players to be locked out of this mode for having bad attitude in a game that happened last year.

Really disappointed in the start times. 5 PM as the only time for Saturday and Sunday? What about people who work on the weekends? Would have liked at least two times like they have on Friday. Or at least some rewards that aren't exclusive to the beta... so those who can't attend aren't missing out on some special stuff.
