Easy step by step guide to go from silver to gold

Hey you. Silver player. You have a 50% winrate in silver, but you understand much more about the game than your teammates normally do. You're frustrated-you try to be the nice guy, you try to fill and not troll, and you still can't budge your win rate. You just want to be friggin gold already, you have beaten golds, and you know you're just as good.

Well, let me tell you something you'll like: you are, about half to a third of the time. Now let me tell you something you don't like: you're also bronze level half the time. Let me explain.

Think of your brain like a computer. You've got all the important information on your hard drive, all the things you need to do tactically and strategically to play the game. But you've only got so much processing power. And when you have to think about how to play a champion, the nitty gritty of their mechanics and landing their skillshots and timing their abilities...you can't think about warding, and map awareness, and team coordination. Unfamiliarity with the champ takes up too much space. That's bronze level play.

Step 1: I need you to go to the website OP.gg. Were going on a fact finding mission together. If you've never looked at this website, start now, it's a fantastic source of info. Search your summoner name and head over to the Champions tab.

Step 2: the math step. Take a look at your top four most played champions. Calculate your win rate when you play those champs, overall. Now, tally up the games from all the champions you played less than ten games with throughout the season. I'll tell you my ratios: 68% and 35%. See what I mean by gold play and bronze play? Your comfortable champions, in silver, in the roles where you know what to do and you do it well, are always going to be better than filling to avoid rage, or a "great" counterpick.

Step 3: The game plan. First off, you will always call your comfort role or roles in ranked. Call them, but if someone else is ahead of you in pick order, let it slide. If youre ahead in pick order, say "Sorry X, I'm going Y " and if they throw a hissy fit, let it slide as well. If you have 2 comfort roles, you should get them 9 times out of 10 if you follow these steps particularly if one of them is support/jungle.

Step 4: Find your backup picks. When forced into the roles you are not comfortable with, you need to have a SAFE, EASY fallback champ whose mechanics you are comfortable with. I use Heimerdinger mid, Maokai top, and Caitlyn ADC. These games, you want to cultivate a zen attitude. It's out of your hands. You're not going to carry, you're just going to be one member of the team who absolutely does not feed. That's your objective, a nice, even 50% win rate. Much, much better than trying to carry in a role you're bad at and getting hammered and losing the game for your team. Just maintain a positive atmosphere, and be totally chill-you know it won't be your fault if your team fails here, and hey, with you making sure you don't feed they have good chances of winning too.

Step 5: Watch your winrate rise to be much closer to that of your best champs. This was it, for me. I went into the site, saw " oh hey, I have a 74% winrate with Rammus, a 65% with Thresh and a 80% with Leona. I'll just call supp/jungle every game and play them no matter what" and I was gold in 25 games from Silver IV all season.

I don't get what was disrespectful about this thread? He is giving smart and good advice to help people get ahead. This is seen way too much in this community, why is that guy so sensitive? You realistically cant give your team tips anymore because people are ridiculously over sensitive and accuse you of being toxic, by then there is almost no changing their attitude and its going to be a rough carry.

Ex: ping bush ......ping bush..... ping bush... "supp can you please ward that bush so we can have vision in the river and not get ganked?"... "omg stfu scrub" this is whats wrong. Please people just understand someone is just trying to help you out.

Actually pretty good advice, I do this exact thing.

I feel I need to squeeze in the warning that "Correlation does not imply causation."

There are a huge number of potential small issues that may cause someone to have higher or lower win rates on certain champions, and these add up. Certain things that cause you to have a low win rate may be what's causing you to choose the champion.

For example, let's say that you usually only pick Jax to counter Tryndamere, and you're a decent Jax, but your team usually loses because Tryndamere is a really strong pick at your Elo, or is overpowered on the current patch. Enemy Trynd causes Jax, Enemy Trynd causes loss, but Jax doesn't necessarily cause loss.

Another hypothetical example: Malphite is more commonly banned at Bronze V than Bronze I. You play Malphite when he's not banned, and you're a decent Malphite. You lose more often at high Elo than at low Elo. High Elo causes Malphite, High Elo causes loss, but Malphite doesn't necessarily cause loss.

These are extreme examples, but even a whole lot of small influences can add up to a very high or very low win%. Avoiding Jax and Malphite is not really necessary because they're simply correlated with losses. They're not causing them.

This guy gets it, keep the champion pool small and the roles to 2-3 and you'll climb in no time. The less you have to think about your champion the more you can focus on other things in the game to help the rest of your team.

I went from gold 3 to Plat 4 this season playing Fizz, Fiora, Lulu and pantheon. I might get called a one trick pony but as long as I'm winning and having fun I could care less.

Honestly if I had the time I probably could have kept on rolling with this strategy all the way to at least plat 1 or 2. But with recently graduating college and starting work full time I've decayed quite a bit nearing the end of the season.

Hope to schedule my time better for season 5 and finally reach diamond.

Solid advice Mr. Scotty.

Based on your advice I'm better off playing support and adc. Problem is that my friends and other players highly recommend that I play ADC more to get out of Bronze.

This is extremely great advice. Any chance you could check my stats? I've played a large amount of ranked games this season (it was my first ever ranked season, and I had just hit level 30 at the beginning, so I spammed games--and lost a majority of the early ones).

If you have a champion that you do really well with and can also fill multiple roles, you will always be able to fill and yet help carry the game due to your understanding of the champion.

For me, that has been Sejuani .

Top/mid/jungle/supp

Chances of me getting any of those are really high. Build changes depending on the needed role. I got from Silver II to Gold V in 41 games (actually less because that includes some TT games I played with friends).

Also, I suggest watching streamers on Twitch if you want to learn better mechanics. This really helped me iron out my rough roles (jungle/top).

I used a method of "what am I doing wrong?" Or scarra's "I suck" method. Sure, you can say you're good, but going into a game and losing should be equally as affective in teaching someone like winning a game.

it is pretty good advice i will start to implement these tips into my game.

So If possible, can you explain what this info means to me in my case? I want to play support, usually get forced into jng. I'm 100% with nunu in jng but 50% or less on supp. Does this mean I should jng main?

So what would you say about my champions?? I already know a bit about mine but sometimes it's nice to get an opinion from another person's point of view. I'll explain some of my highest played champs and 50% winrate champs first though. Volibear/Renekton/Shen are my mains for top lane. Mostly Volibear/Renekton are my real main champs. I know everything in and out about them. Can beat most top laners with them, too. However, I felt Volibear kind of fell off. I just don't feel like I can carry matches with him the way I use to, or maybe the way to do it has changed. I don't know. Usually use him top lane, kind of want to put him back in the jungle recently but meh. He's my real main champ. Over 400+ normal matches with him. Kind of dropped him after a bit of using him in ranked though. Renekton got me from Bronze to Silver in 20 games. For some reason, couldn't do that with Volibear. Then I dropped Renekton ever since his ult nerf and other changes, I don't know, but something has felt wrong with him since. I remember when I had 100 health and died to turret shot just barely. Kind of wished I had that early HP of his ult back. So lately, I've been using Fizz/Maokai/Skarner/Lulu/Nami. Each had about 50% winrate until about recently. Sometimes I feel like my losses with Lulu/Nami is cause we needed a tank and we didn't have one. My Ahri is good but I don't use her match. I have 100% winrate with Sona in the 3 matches I've used her but she's so boring to play as. I seem to do consistently well with Janna, but meh. I've also won both my Irelia games so far. Maokai/Skarner got me out of low Silver. As I climb higher in rank, I've recently felt that my Fizz needs a bit more work and that Maokai/Skarner get easily countered. Lulu/Nami/Janna, sometimes I feel like we need a tank instead but sometimes get bored of only using Leona.

So yeah. From your point of view, what would you say about my champions?? Curious to see another person's opinion about it.

Good stuff, I knew that Silver Jungle and Sup is so bad that it pain me to look at them play so i just forced myself to play it for the sake of having good jungler and result in my team being 4 very, very normal silver teammate. I'm also that type of guy who hate adc even more than Teemo. I reject the fact that I'm actually a better player in playing adc more than Jungle, Top and Mid, I'll try to follow what my stats said and try vayne and lucian so see if they can carry me out of silver
