Building Team Comp In Solo Que

While everyone typically goes for their best lane, or best champ, I try to find ways to improve upon our team comp in order to help my team succeed.

Tips on doing this ?

For example, if I see that are support and top lanes have squishy champs such as Soraka & Fiora , I will pick a very tanky jungle like a Volibear . What other things should I recognize ?

Maybe adding CC to a team that has none by picking a bold Ryze mid or top lane.

Dont pick voli for a tank jungle with that top and support. Your team has no engage at all, and your just gonna get kited pretty hard. I would recommend junglers like Amumu Zac SejuaniNocturne

I always pick my champ based on what my team is lacking. If my team is well balanced that's when I take the enemy composition into account.

Things to look for:

  • How much engage/disengage does your team have?
  • How much waveclear does your team have?
  • How much general CC does your team have?
  • How much damage vs how much tankiness?
  • Are there any particular synergies you might be able to exploit (i.e. gnarven)
  • What does the rest of your team "want" to do? Are they a disengage/peel team? An engage team? A siege team? What more does the team need to enable them to do these things?
  • How is the damage balance? All AD? All AP?
  • What does the ENEMY team "want" to do? Is there something you can pick to counter that?
  • Is there a particular weakness the enemy team has (i.e. lack of waveclear) that you might be able to exploit?
  • Is there a particular weakness that YOUR team has?

If you take even a couple of those things into account you'll be doing better than like 80% of league players (or more).

When I am picking in solo queue, I find the main things that are lacking tend to be a durable front line or at least one dedicated tank, defensive crowd control (peel/disengage), and, since Fiora, Yi, and the juggernauts are in vogue, magic damage. Unless I am the designated APC or ADC, I almost always pick a tank to fill these gaps. That's usually Braum in the support role (peel, disengage, durability), Nautilus (peel, durability) or Diana (magic damage) in the jungle, or Singed in the top lane (durability, magic damage, moderate engage/disengage/peel).
