League of Legends General Tips

So I recently started playing League of Legends back in October of 2014, and to be honest, I am quite addicted to this game. It's fun, exciting, and every match is different. However, as I leveled up, and people began to become more and more skillful, my winning streaks quickly began to turn into losing streaks, and I am just having a relatively hard time keeping up with the amount of skill that my opponents now have. So, here I am, seeking advice on how to up my game, and improve. Does anyone have any general advice?

To be more specific, and to make this discussion relatively easier, I am primarily seeking advice on how to improve my early to mid-game laning phase, and how to improve my farming. I also need advice on how to know what to build, and when to build it, and lastly, I need advice on how to win most of my lane trades. My primary issue, is that I lose my lane quickly, and feed whoever is else is in my lane, and I am punished for it later on. I need to know how to fix this.

Anyways, thanks again for the advice, and I hope that it help not only me, but anyone else who comes across this board.

When you find a champion you are going to play often, make a custom game and practice last hitting for about 5 minutes.

Take a break between each game and look at the advanced match history. See what you did wrong, and look at the enemy team to see what they did right.

Always always always always always upgrade your trinket.

Buying a pink ward and throwing it in the river bushes or your own jungle can save your life.

Build reactively. If you are behind, buy even the cheapest MR or Armor. It can go a long way.

Experiment with Runes on some of your favorite champions. Every single guide might say to get X/Y/Z/7, but you yourself might work better with a different set up. Only do this on champions you are comfortable with.

Play every role at some point in time. You'll get more general knowledge and you'll be better for it.

Eat a banana. Seriously, they are delicious.

Kills are neat, but towers are neatier.

Have fun.

General tips

Practice last hitting and try and get 80 cs by 10 minutes, focus on not getting killed, buy a ward every time you back.

If you need to spend time sitting in base for that item 1052 or something its better you go back to lane with a ward and a few pots instead, for knowledge and sustaining in lane are way more important.

The only time I would wait on an item is if it is a key item or complete item, like a item 3089 or a item 3031 , and you are not in dire need of wards.

Warding, last hitting, and having less than 9 deaths a game will literally get you to silver if not gold xD

This game is around 10% sheer mechanical skill, and around 90% game knowledge. The more you learn about each champion (ie. there counters, strengths, weaknesses, their abilities, are they ap or ad, What role they fill, etc.) the better! I highly suggest you try and play a few games with every champion thaat comes on free week until you've played every champ a little bit.

What champions do you play? Any lane decided on?

Never stop farming and always look for opportunities to take free objectives.

Stop thinking about KDA. Dying less, getting kills, yeah yeah... those are actually optional. The reason to get kills or avoid deaths is to farm and get objectives. If you can trade a death for an objective or let a risky kill go to take an objective/farm, its OK.

A lot of stuff just comes from experience, learning new champions is always helpful because it teaches you to play against them as well. I actually recommend playing lots of ARAM to new players because you become familiar with a multitude of champions and how they interact in team fights which is a massive portion of the game.

As far as general tips on summoners rift goes... biggest advice I can offer is wave control and map control.

Vision and minion presence are extremely important when going aggressive on the map. Minions not only give vision, but if you make an aggressive play and succeed they allow you to push objectives afterwards. All too often I see people have successful aggression only to fall back and achieve nothing because their lanes were not pushed enough to take a turret. Try not to take big aggressive risks when you don't have pressure somewhere on the map to take an objective off of it, otherwise you're just risking a bunch for nothing in return outside of maybe a little gold for winning the fight.

If nobody is in your lane, you need to put pressure on it. That means they've roamed elsewhere and you need to force them to come back, or lose turrets because of their absence. If you don't pressure lanes where your opponent is not, you're essentially putting your team in a 4v5 position!

One of the things I've noticed quite a bit about solo queue is that people tend to be super aggressive in lane. The advantage of this is that if you play a snowball champion you can often get very far ahead and hard carry a game. While this strategy works, I've found it much more consistent to play defensively and simply capitalize on the mistakes of these over aggressive players. Wait for an opportunity to come to you, rather than trying to make plays only to fall into a trap. Only if you have a numbers advantage and/or you're super far ahead should you be making big aggressive plays. Remember that even if you're ahead, all it takes is a 2v1 or 3v1 and somebody on the enemy team gets big shutdown gold on you, cancelling out your advantage and putting the rest of your team behind.
