I like Varus. Is Varus viable?

Also, what are some other ADC's I should buy and learn? I don't like Kalista though.

The Real Question: "I like Varus. Can I play Varus and succeed?"

The Real Answer: "Yes."

Don't listen to metahumpers who say and think things like "Graves is sooo OP now, you **have **to play him" or one of two other ADCs of their choosing just because they are popular, when they are ignorant of the fact Graves hasn't had a single change since July of last year.

Buy and Learn and Play the champions who you want to play. You'll have more success and more importantly, more fun playing the champions. On top of that, the base gameplay of Ranged AD Champions or the ADC role is pretty much the same on the lot of them so there's even less reason to not play who you want.

The bottom line is that you'll do better and be more successful learning the champs that you want to learn and learning how to play them well than someone who bounces to whatever the Flavor of the Month is.

100% Viable.

If you get good at him you will squash anyone who says "noob, Varus isn't viable!" if you are playing against someone who has mastery of another champ that is strong vs Varus, you won't always win of course, but you will do well.

Varus is probably the most unique ADC in the game (he is also quite strong with an AP or on-hit build, but those are a little harder to pull off). If playing like a normal ADC in a duo lane, just take advantage of your naturally long range (3rd longest without steroids after Ashe and Caitlyn) in combination with your Q and E to constantly bully your lane opponent hard. Varus thrives off of abusing the enemy later and getting ahead in the game. Late game, he can carry pretty hard if he gets items, but he falls off without them, in the same way MF and Caitlyn fall off without items (he also carries hard once he has full build because his kit works like a hyper carry's, only lacking a large AS steroid, which you build around anyway).

Your W stacks allow you to melt squishies (and it is just plain fun, as you've probably discovered) and stay relevant against big beefy tanks. Your job is to kite around the edge of a fight applying stacks and popping them with your Q and E. If someone engages on you, ult their face and run away so you can keep killing them from max range. Varus is immobile, so you HAVE to stay out of range of everything else, and you have an even better time if you can duo queue with a good peeling support who can keep divers off of you reliably (Alistar is my personal favorite "Bodyguard" support for Varus, after that Braum is also pretty good, just not as good at dealing with an actual bruiser in your face, more for body blocking abilities).

Basically, Varus is an absolute blast to play, he just requires a lot more personal awareness and team coordination to stay alive in the late game.

Some other good ones to try are Draven if you like micro management and high damage, Sivir if you like team utility and can afford to have slightly lower DPS, and Tristana if you like a more ability focused tower killer (late game she can kill a tower in seconds with E+Q) who also has ver good safety and self peel.

Is varus viable...I would have to lean towards yes at lower elo / normals and no in the higher elo. Im not saying this because i have a hard on for "the meta" I play velkoz mid and gragas support...meta isnt the only thing that matters. The issue varus has is being so immoble. Rarely do any of the adc's without escapes creep into the meta or the spotlight. Sivir has been making a splash, but even though shes relatively immoble, she has a spell shield and her ult does give her survivability, relying on an ult to escape is risky business. Even Ashe who has no escapes has reliable kiting with her slow all and stun ult.

It all comes down to your mechanics with varus vs enemy bot lane. As far as other ADC's to look at, there are a lot i think are pretty strong atm.

Tristana, Corki, Graves, Lucian are my current faves. I love lucians playstyle personally, its really rewarding dashing around and throwing bullets out nonstop.

Varus is a hybrid adc, meaning he can also be used to play ap. One time there was an AP Varus playing mid and he dominated.

If you like Varus maybe go with Ashe and Cait?

Nope.

Jinx Graves Draven Quinn

Varus simply doesn't have enough to offset his immobility. His most valueable asset is his Q and nid and xerath have better versions that do more damage. He's one of my favorite adcs as well, and I can certainly do well with him. I know I would have done better if I put the effort into a viable champion though.

Auryiel3/16/2015, 2:34:06 PM1 votes

You wanna pick Varus for his poke and engage, but you don't wanna pick an AD carry for poke and engage

I'd say Varus is the kind of champion you pick to compliment certain kinds of comps, not one you simply pick blindly all the time

He's fun and can be strong under the right circumstances, but don't expect to win as often as you would with the likes of Jinx if you instalock

I play Varus quite a bit! I'm only silver 1, but you can lolking me and look at stats. I do pretty well on him.

Also, consider Essence Reaver if you play him. You'll take some flak for it, but it fits my playstyle quite well. My Q's hit like nid spears mid game, and I can use it on cooldown, basically.

WALUlGI3/16/2015, 4:04:57 PM1 votes

Honestly, if you like him - play him. The meta is so out of control right now and so diverse, that everyone who is screaming "not used in lcs ghey" are just mindless. If you said that Cleanse was a good summoner on EZ Mid, they would have cried in all chat. Now look, cleanse is being used. Varus is good. He's got poke, range, cc, an engage, and shred with his W. You like Varus? Play the shit out of Varus. MY opinion on Varus is kinda how he's the jack of all trades but the master of none. He's got above average poke/range, shred, etc. But an engage on an ADC seems kind of wasted since almost all support/tops/jungles will carry one. Also, Ashe has an immediate AOE stun as opposed to slow snare. His range is strong but lower than Caitlyn's and Sivir's. His shred is strong but not close to Vayne/Kog'Maw. He's got strong mixed damage, but so does Kog, EZ, and Corki. But if he fits your playstyle, play him

I play him and do rather well. It's about the matchup and how well you know your champ. Same goes for most of them outside of the few that Riot doesn't like, and therefore puts them in an unplayable state.

Every adc is viable if you aren't fighting a Kalista(yes, even Quinn :P)

CrisD3/16/2015, 10:40:51 PM1 votes

I am not an adc main, but i love to kill adcs (i either mid or support) With that said, in your need to have list are:

  • Caitlyn
  • Tristana
  • Ashe

Cait is safe and has a good early game, and she is easy to play. Tristana is, as usual, hella strong and has escape and disengage. Ashe is just a farm bot in the early game, but she is like the only ADC who can initiate.

You can play Varus, of course, he hits hard and has an awesome harass. He has no escapes tho, so don't get frustrated while you learn to position yourself, as you are going to die...A LOT.

grimreefa3/17/2015, 1:58:41 AM1 votes

The important thing is to find a champion that you enjoy and can play stable and reliably against a lot of enemy champions.

Don't worry about the meta too much as long as your champion is at least vaugely in the meta, i.e. not picking ziggs for support.

Sure ziggs support could work, as I was just playing with a hecarim support and he did quite well, but that pick isn't always going to work.

Play what you enjoy, and if people don't like it, fuck em to hell.

SgtCrispy3/17/2015, 2:35:19 PM1 votes

He's viable, and he's fine in lane and scales well. The problem is he has the mobility of a brick and just gets dived by champions like LeBlanc and Zed and there's not a lot he can do to stop it.

ABlueQuaker3/16/2015, 10:19:24 AM1 votes

Ashe and Kalista are probably next closest to Varus in terms of their role within a team comp.

disregardable3/16/2015, 10:23:24 AM1 votes

His kit is very similar to Miss Fortunes. If you enjoy playing him, you'll probably like her too.

The Wet Baguette3/16/2015, 10:32:37 AM1 votes

Varus is hybrid because of the scaling on his ult and his w.

If you like hybrids, Corki is fun.

Gränd3/16/2015, 11:10:56 AM1 votes

As a meta fanatic, unfortunately not really. The stacking + detonation mechanic is detrimental to his kit, his passive is really sub-par and his kit is awfully mana hungry for an ADC. However, he does have the cc ult going for him which besides Ashe, are the only 2 adc's which have that.

Despite him not being really viable, don't be afraid to try out. You just might make him work, but maybe in a different role or lane with different builds.
