Quinn Support
I'm a Quinn main and I really don't want to play anything else... so I've learned to adapt to every role, and I thought I would share my knowledge about playing Quinn as support... because honestly I've found that she is insanely strong as a support. Believe it or not.
Pros:
- Good damage
- Good harass with Harrier passive and throwing Blind
- Blind can shut down enemy ADC
- Vault has single target CC and interrupts enemy skills
- W provides good vision to avoid ganks and also allows for safe facechecking of bushes when warding
- Decent disengage if the enemy gets aggressive
Cons:
- Squishy
- CC not as strong and very limited AOE
- Doesn't have a heal skill to provide sustain
- No extremely hard engage ability
So how exactly do you play Quinn support? Well first, for runes and masteries I just run standard stuff... Armor pen runes and some magic resist, and then a standard offensive mastery page. Nothing crazy, just the same stuff I run for top/mid/adc Quinn.
For starting items, I always go Ancient Coin, because this is the only way Quinn can be viable without straight up stealing CS from your ADC. She gets decent gold for this, enough to stay relevant, and you can put all of your focus on harassing the enemy.
Ancient Coin + 3 Health Pots is a good start. I usually take Warding Trinket because you need wards early on, and we're not getting Sight Stone so any bit helps. Summoners I just run Flash Ignite because you want pure burst and all in potential here... you're going for harass and kills, not passive plays.
Laning:
So during laning phase you're looking to harass and zone the enemy out. It's actually pretty easy. No enemy is going to stand close when your passive procs on them, so you get free zoning right there. If they do stand close, then go ahead and AA them for some good damage. Get a good angle from off to the side of the minion wave for some sneaky poke on the enemy ADC with your Q. Sometimes you can time it to hit Q on both bot laners for extra damage. Especially when the support is sticking close to the ADC. When your passive procs a target within range, immediately AA them and Vault AA them for extra burst damage. Then back off unless you both decide to go in for the kill.
Even against strong zoners like Thresh, Morgana, Blitzcrank, etc... you have equally strong zoning potential. Learn to bait their skills out, and when they miss, you now have 8-10 seconds to aggressively harass them. Ward the side bushes often to keep the enemy out, but also use the side bushes often if the enemy fails to ward them.
Going all in:
So when you have a good wave of minions in your favor, and the enemy is in a bad spot... you and your ADC decide it's time to initiate. So you want to try and start an all in by getting your passive proc on the target... then AA > Vault > Ignite > AA. At this point your ADC should be jumping in for their own damage. At this point the enemy typically runs because of your burst, so if that happens, just give chase and keep autoing.
Save your Q for when the enemy ADC gets aggressive. Throw the Q at them and then decide whether you guys can finish one of them off or whether you need to back out of the fight. Don't be afraid to flash away if things didn't go as planned.
If the enemy goes all in on you:
Just vault away and then flash if need be... You should definitely not be getting caught out, but it happens. If your ADC gets caught out, throw your blind at their ADC... try to get some autos off... anything to stop the fight from continuing. Vault the ADC as a last resort to momentarily stop them and give your ADC a chance to escape.
But overall, you're looking to harass with your passive and your blind... when it's safe to do so, you should vault the enemy also. This works great with say, a Morgana or Thresh who gets your passive marked on them and you're standing near them in a crowd of your own minions. You can AA > Vault > AA them while safely landing back in your minion wave so they can't CC you.
If you play well, you and your ADC should have a couple of kills/assists and you can start buying. I typically just build support Quinn like I would build her mid or top. I get Berserkers Grieves, I get BotRK, I get IE or LW... It all depends on the matchup and how ahead or behind you are. Always save a bit for a few Stealth wards, since we won't be buying Sight Stone. The reason for this is because it's far cheaper to just by a half dozen or so wards during laning phase because you definitely shouldn't lose laning phase. After laning phase, you can buy wards as you please, but really your bot lane should be sufficiently ahead and warding isn't as necessary when you're 1-2 levels ahead of the enemy bot lane and probably have taken their tower.
I still recommend buying a pink and a few stealth wards every so often... but this is at your discretion.
Mid/late game you should be strong enough to 1v1 the enemy ADC and easily destroy them. Even if you are slightly behind. You should be looking to catch out squishier champs and assassinate them as Valor. I honestly play support Quinn identical to top or mid Quinn by mid/late game. I sell my ancient coin for whatever offensive item I need... and I start farming normally because there's always some minions/monster somewhere to farm after laning phase. Farming enemy champs also works. :^)
I've played hundreds of Quinn games in various roles and every time I have played Quinn support, I've won the game. We rarely ever lose during laning phase, and I find with ancient coin that I'm still relevant throughout. I notice that I'm rarely targeted that much, and the thing is, if you target me, my ADC is free to eat you alive, and if you target my ADC, I'm free to do the same... so it's a strategy that not many people know what to do about.
It's not a traditional "double AD" comp because you don't CS and instead just earn money supporting your ADC. I find it also helps your overall team comp to play Quinn support over say... Quinn mid or top. Since playing Quinn top means usually sacrificing tank, and Quinn mid usually means sacrificing AP. But with Quinn support you can have a tanky top, a strong AP mid laner, and then Quinn is like a free assassin/split pusher for your team. She might not provide the most CC but her blind and vault interrupt can be invaluable at times. She won't work for every team comp or against every team comp, but I think she is more than viable.
So I'd like to hear other player's thoughts on this. Yay? Nay?
