Guide to team comps?

Hi guys I'm looking to start playing ranked 5s with some friends.

I would like some advice on how to build good team comps, what are the popular comps, how they work/what champs are good, and how to counter other comps. Basically a general rundown of getting a great team comp in a game.

For example, if we run a "poke comp" - what is a poke comp exactly, and how do we win with one? When should we run a poke comp, what champs to pick and how should we counter an enemy poke comp? Similar questions for other types of comps that I know the names of but don't really understand anything about - "Juggermaw" or "siege comp" etc. etc.

I've been following pro play recently, and have managed to get an idea of what single champs are strong picks, but not really an idea of how team comps are formed and why they work.

Thanks, Pushkar

I learned a lot of my (little) teamcomp knowledge from watching the LCS. Playing a poke teamcomp would prob be like Fnatic's first game versus Origen in the Summer Split Finals. I think it was Gangplank, Gragas, Varus, Corki, and Braum. :D

Watching LCS is a great way to find champions that synergize well with each other.

A poke comp is a team composition that relies on long range abilities to deal lots of damage before a team fight starts (varus, jayce, kog'maw, niddalee, xerath, ziggs, azir, etc.) Poke comps are countered by team compositions that have a lot of engage. To deal with teams with lots of engage it helps to round out your team with champions that can disengage or zone the enemy team (janna, gragas, braum, etc.)

A Juggermaw comp is a Kog'Maw based comp that has lots of shields to keep the Kog'Maw alive (janna, oriana, lulu, etc.) You can make similar comps and substitute a different ADC for Kog'Maw.

A siege comp is a team composition that can quickly bring down towers. Tristana is the best ADC for this comp, though other hypercarries can be substituted (jinx, kalista, etc.) Some siege comps bring an tankier threat that can kill towers quickly (trundle, tryndamere, nasus, etc.) Siege comps usually have very good wave clear (ziggs, viktor, azir, etc.) and either some poke or disengage as well.

When I was in charge of a team I made a google spreadsheet where I had each person put champions into different categories based on how comfortable they felt playing them (i.e. A, B, C, D, F.) Then I looked at what team comp I could make based on what champions my team was good with.
