New player questions

So i played a LONG time ago and got to lvl 12 by just playing Co-Op vs AI. I'm thinking about coming back but have pretty much forgotten everything (which wasn't much to begin with) except the basics. I have not bought any champions yet (i just played whatever was free that week) but have about 8000 IP. What would be a good champion to buy and stick with for a while? I know i don't want to play support but don't really understand the differences in playing top, mid or bot. Jungle seems really fun but i read somewhere that you can't really do that at low levels, not effectively anyway. Also, is it best to just stick to Co-Op vs AI until lvl 30? Thanks in advance.

Coop vs AI doesn't give you much of an experience of how the game is actually played, recommend switching to some actual PVP action once you've hit lvl 20 or so and have some Tier 3 runes.

If you want a cheap but flexible pick, I recommend Kayle Kayle.

  • Valid in any lane or jungle, though wouldn't recommend being too creative and going to fill a position as a marksman with her without some experience first.
  • She only costs 450IP (you'll thank yourself for buying cheaper champs first, runes are an IP black hole at 10k-13k+ per full rune page, depending on your runes of choice)
  • Fun. Full of utility. Tons of mid- and late-game damage, despite her relatively recent AP nerfs.

Quite frankly, learn Annie, Ryze, Miss Fortune, and so on. While you learn the game, it is best to focus on champions who require the least skill to play at a reasonable level. All this really means is stick with champions with easy builds and few (few = none) skillshots.

In my opinion, Annie is the number 1 best champion to learn the basics of laning because she is really easy to learn (farm with your Q), relatively safe, high damage output without gold (it won't matter if your cs is lacking), and she can be played in multiple roles (Mid, Top, or Support...and Jungle for the daring :D )

At a level lower than high gold (gold 1 50lp ish), the most effective use of your study/practice time is done by yourself in custom games, BUT--you can't level an account that way, try to play as many normals as possible. Remember, you aren't playing to win, you're playing to make a ton of mistakes and learn from them.

^ This is the best way to level an account. If you want the fastest way to level an account, get an X-time EXP boost and grind out ARAMs (but that can be boring and you won't learn anything about the game)

A pro has made more mistakes than an amateur has attempted

Although Kayle fits the previously mentioned criteria, she has recently been nerfed, so she isn't as effective as Annie (or Ryze). Also, the benefit of someone like Ryze is he get really tanky as he builds damage, so he can burst down a team with heavy AoE AP damage, while being relatively hard to kill.

To conclude, what I advise you to do would be to save your IP for tier 3 runes (once you hit lvl 20), pick up Annie and Ryze, and play them in as many normal games as possible. Keep in mind if you play poorly you might get flamed, but just remember everyone was new/weak in this game at one point, it's alright to make mistakes, and "/mute all" is your friend ^.^

Like others have said here, after you have picked up Tier-3 runes just start playing normals with real people. Continue to play free-week champs and consider buying a few 450IP champs if you feel comfortable with them. Once you find a champion that really "clicks" buy them.

I don't want to foster a perception that some champs are "OP" but you will notice design changes have made some of the newer champions "feel" stronger in either quality-of-life ways or just pure design clarity. You may want to prioritize 6300 IP champs over 450 or 1350 IP ones once you find one you like.
