How to "carry" lane as support?

Kapparoth·3/20/2015, 1:48:45 AM·1 votes·2,966 views

I'm in a real predicament here, because I main support in normals, and I frequently win, but whenever I support in Ranked, it doesn't usually end well. Most of the time, it isn't even my fault that we lost lane (i.e. My ADC doesn't connect/is bad at last hitting/is focused more on poking than farming, etc). So, is there anybody out there that can tell me what I need to do, and who I need to play if I want to carry the game if my ADC is stupid/bad? Be as specific as you can, and I will appreciate any response that isn't a troll post. Troll post being something like "Just don't support, then." because no matter what you do, there will always be times in Ranked where you need to play support. Here are the champs I normally use for support:

Leona Nami Sona Annie

Once again, as long as you aren't trolling, your advice will be appreciated.

Well if you're looking to "carry" a game as support, you're using the wrong supports. Annie is somewhat viable for that goal but the other three are what I like to call "true" supports. They just simply can't do anything other than support. Champions I suggest that are capable of "carrying" games as support might be Lux, Morgana, Zyra, Vel Koz, and Syndra. This is especially true of Morgana. A good morgana will be able to turn a situation around even for a bad ADC.

I will be frank; in a duo lane, there will be times where the other player is not good. Supports are especially gold deprived, and generally cannot carry by themselves.

However, it is still possible to play aggressive support champions that can be the deciding factor in fights. I would recommend sticking to Annie and Sona, as both are champions that don't need someone else to be good.

In the case that the ADC is useless, just ditch him/her after the laning phase and try to use the utility in a support's kit to pick off enemy champions or win team fights.

Karma - I carry by not building as a Support. If I have a crappy ADC who can't secure a kill you better believe that I'm taking that kill. It's going to keep happening unless they secure their kills that I set up.

I win my lane by doing the following: I always build AP first then mid game I start building Tanky. Always R - > Q when the ADC / Support is alone or even if they're together just to burst them down early game and force them either out of lane or to their death.

Zilean - Drop that Bomb. 40 Starting AP is more than enough. I've gotten kicked out of 3 different lanes once and was 9 - 0 - 0 before I died.

Honestly, it's hard to say. Usually supps don't carry but I main support and ADC myself so I know how to play both sides.Sometimes I end up playing a bit ADC-ish when I'm supp and vice versa. The thing is, it all depends on the ADC and supp combination, their communication and how well synchronized they can be. Once as Braum I got kills like crazy ad protected Vayne many times from death while other times as Leona I ended up getting 20+ kills with my friend playing Pantheon (not meta but the near infinite stun gets the job done). You just gotta be careful with what you and the ADC are playing as and what the enemy ADC and supp are. Also, I suggest you get Braum since he can be a more than a great supp, and even though I haven't tried Bard, I've seen enemy Bards (both supp and jungle) and they can be annoying. Just depends on te circumstances since in Ranked there's the chance of getting counter-picked. Hope this helps in some way.

If you're playing in Bronze, don't main support. Just do it if you have to. I recommend getting good at a carry role, just to get to an elo where you consistently get carries that can secure kills. If you do insist on supporting, most of the meta supports make it stupidly easy to get kills, like Blitzcrank, Thresh, and Leona. Thresh is one of those champions that scales really well because of his passive and some other champions scale pretty well are Karma and Lulu (that I know of, of course). You want to go with a very aggressive support; most of the time ADC's in bronze don't understand the concept of any kind of bot lane other than a kill lane, so you should probably do your best to work with their kill-happy aggressive play style. After all, when the end game comes around, ADC's deal more damage than anyone else I've played. Getting full build with Veigar, Lulu, or Twisted Fate has nothing on when I get full build for Jinx... you know, tons of damage items and a last whisper does wonders to chunk people's health with auto attacks.

Okay, let me rephrase the question: What do I do to win the game if I'm supporting someone who isn't very good?

Support main here (though I'm only Bronze 1), and I know what you mean by carrying your ADC, even your game.

If you think anything like me, in our lingo, carrying doesn't mean killing everything in sight, its more about setting up the plays and setting up your team for success. There are many games that I would feel that I'm the carry, despite the fact I don't have any kills (but then again, I would have 20+ assists). This is what I do:

  1. VISION OP !! especially if you can get a pick off someone that is roaming. Also, if the enemy team has a champ that goes invis. Please carry that pink ward with you in your inventory at all times. you want to know where that WK/Talon is escaping to after he jumped into your team.

  2. Good zoning, in lane or in team fights, its not always about the damage you deal, but how much dmg you've prevented without the enemy being able to do it. Nami does that a bit better within your champion pool

  3. Map awareness and letting people which enemies are moving in which direction - typically done by wards or just being able to predict where enemies will be moving next based on objectives and positioning - can make good shot calling as well if people are willing to listen to you

  4. denying farm - by zoning in laning phase. Make the enemy think twice about last hitting that cannon minion, of course ping your adc to let them know when you are going and when you are posturing

  5. Getting picks / roaming ganking - flash solar flare following up with a zenith blade typically gets the job done nicely

  6. disengaging the priority targets, like speeding up your carry, and they don't have to be the adc - if your adc gets jumped from a tri-force jax, make sure you have W's power chord ready, reduce his burst, then switch over to your E ASAP so your ADC can escape

  7. shield your allies during trading - again, its about when you use it. shields are a great way to have your team out trade the enemy .. if they know what they are doing

  8. positioning / repositionings - more for something like janna, where you can move the enemy around - ever tried a flash monsoon and the enemy is in the tower and the rest of the team pushed back? thats a great feeling. especially when your who team survives and they don't after.

  9. body shield - thats right, block that cait's snipe, that lucian's culling, sometimes even that sivir's boomerang just to reduce its dmg. if you are reducing the dmg, most people don't notice it, but you'll know what you did.

Overall though, I personally see that support carry plays are very ... not visible to others. If you zoned the enemy during laning phase, its typically not too visible. your vision saved a gank a mile away, well, you've backed off already, so there is no "clutch" involved. The pink ward in the middle of the team fight to reveal WK, your team probably won't even notice it until alot later. That body block to reduce 15% of sivir's boomerang dmg, even though it still hit the adc, he survived with that body block and he won't notice it. If the shield was place on the carry the right time, the shield may have exploded right away, they won't notice it.

This, is why we say support is a under appreicated role.

Heya,

You have a lot of advice here. I figured it may be worth linking a couple of tips I gave to other players about supports

They may need to be taken slightly in context, but I think it may help a little.

Good luck on the Rift!

From my experience, if you're setting up good kills and plays as a support, and your team isn't capitalizing on them, then you aren't going to win no matter what you do. Blitzcrank, Leona, Thresh, Morgana are perfect for this. They have this "I caught this person, now kill them," feel to their kit. Which is great for solo queue, which solo queue most of the time is who gets the most picks.

You can't win every game, and supports are hard to carry as than others because their kit is supporting their team. If you have a halfway decent team and you're setting up kills, your team will instantly follow them, and if you land nearly every hook as a blitzcrank or thresh, you can be sure your team will follow your lead as you continue to feed them.

Organized and solo queue supporting are 2 different games. At least in the lower elo's (gold/silver/bronze). I have no experience in plat+ so I don't know if it changes, but I assume it does to an extent.

gitsi3/20/2015, 5:06:07 PM1 votes

At least with Leona, since her engage and lockdown is so great, if you're adc is useless, focus on vision for the rest of the team and roaming. Since low elo junglers are such a mixed bag you can never really count on good ganks from them, start making them for other lanes. ADC wont eat no matter what you do, start feeding that midlaner.

Velkoz Zilean Zyra Annie Anivia Brand Leblanc Morgana Veigar Lux Lissandra Teemo

There are various champions that can be used as support that are not traditional support. If you find yourself stuck in a support role and are constantly having booty ADCs, try picking up a carry champion. Once you lock in support essentials such as Gold Income upgrades, Sightstones and Trinket Upgrades, you're free to build as you please. Of course you still want to play as support, but if something happens when your ADC is not listening or being a big troll or even if they AFK, at least you'll have a better chance at surviving lane, possibly securing kills and/or making it to late game to truly support your team.
