Well as you all know Malzahar is a fairly immobile champion with i decent amount of cc (suppress, aoe silence) is really building him straight ap always the best? I mean sure you can take out a target rather quickly but you put yourself in the middle of everything and you tend to die fast even when you get a catch. I have been experimenting with ways where i can balance his damage and his overall surviveability and this is what i came up with.

Depending on your match up is what you want to build first. Say you're going against a zed or a talon you would probably start with a little bit a armor so they can't wreck you completely. On the other hand if you go against an ap burster you might want to build a bit of MR. I know this is obvious to most people. But how much MR are Armor do you want?

Thats where i have come up with this theory, Malzahar has his voidlings and an aoe % health damage so how much ap do you really need to be strong? The answer is not much. With his medium low CD and his aoe ablilties if you can survive long enough you don't have to worry you can get multiple shots off and your voidlings will do a lot of the work for you.

Build******** The general build path i go is tear>boots>frozen heart/abyssal scepter(build both rush depending on match up)>mercs or tabi> banshees> AA staff(should be stacked ok by now) and a warmogs(if your team needs a tankier champ) or crystal scepter(if your team need more cc) for good measure because you need a tad more hp to make your resistances worth it.

Masteries 21-9-0 standard ap masts

runes armor seals +9 ap quints +15 mag pen marks +7.8 mag res glyphs +12

TL;DR Look at the build tank malz yay.

You will have the highest damage on the team, you're a late game MONSTER just play safe and farm early game because you're fairly weak, work on counter killing you go ham if they go on you.

Thank you for reading have fun.

You've got to let readers know that this won't work as well in solo queue That way inexperienced players dont get the wrong idea.

very true, for new players please stick to the meta when you play ranked. This build is for fun :) (normals)

Not gonna leave the builds general idea, but I'd NEVER choose warmogs over rylais on malz even in tank mode, as the slow is invaluable for what will become your main source of late game damage (the pool)

Just for another idea the way I usually play him is to start 9% SV (19/0/11 + SV quints) then dorans->tear->Rabadons->AA->Rylais/Voidstaff/Banshees

The jumping aspect of his E, mana return, and complete safety while farming causes even the DoT lessened SV to mimic enormous HP/5 that scales well through the game and can allow you to farm forever.

For the same reasons you list for your tank build this has been highly effective for me due to his non-reliance on early AP. However, late game I typically like to be loaded with AP, as usually champs have mobility on such low CD that I like to see it bring the pain if Q/E tap them, as well as for the best scaling wave clear in the game hands down.

That said I can see the merit of using some tankiness to allow some bolder ults late game when normally you would get destroyed unless extremely cautiously using it.
