Buying & using runes...

Hello all;

I've recently hit level 20, have saved 7907 IP and am looking to buy my first runes. While my champion pool is large enough I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about buying and using runes so I can begin playing more effectively. I've looked up various texts and videos but found a lot of them to be more confusing than they were helpful and decided to come to the boards for help. Most of my pool consists of fighters that have some tanky qualities or pure-bread tanks ( they are Alistar, Blitzcrank, Dr. Mundo, Gangplank, Garen, Gragas, Jayce, Kayle, Nasus, Sion and Vi. ) and I'd ideally like to learn to capitalize on that. My first inclination was to go with Scaling Health Regeneration Glyphs, Scaling MR Quints, Flat Armor or Health seals and Hybrid Penetration Marks but I'm really not sure if that is best/what to do.

I'm looking forward to advice and am willing to answer any questions regarding this issue; Mr. Beane.

Somewhat unrelated, but I looked at your profile to see if you had any runes already. I didn't see any mastery pages set up, so I'd recommend setting up some since they can offer a pretty substantial advantage for free. You can have up to 20 pages and you don't have to pay anything for them.

For your very first pages, I would recommend the following for a good, general setup.

AD Page:

  • AD Quints
  • AD Marks
  • Flat Armor Seals
  • Flat MR Glyphs

AP Page

  • AP Quints
  • Magic/Hybrid Pen Marks
  • Flat Armor Seals
  • Flat MR Glyphs

All of these runes (except the Hybrid Pen Marks if you get them) are relatively cheap and cover pretty much every champion adequately. It gives you basic resistances against both damage type and some early offense, which is general enough to use in every situation.

You can build more specialized pages later, but those two will hold you for quite a while.

I'd recommend prioritizing the resistances (since they can be used on both pages), followed by Attack Damage (since mages can still autoattack early for harass and last-hitting), and finally the AP/Pen runes.

The runes you listed are good choices for tanks and the champions you listed, but it's a more specific setup. You are probably better off getting a couple general pages first, then specializing.

Look up guides for the champions you like to play the most. Build your rune pages around them.

This was Phreak's video on efficient rune pages. Helped me a lot. There was also a simplified version on reddit somewhere...

But eh hey, here's another link to a similiar board from oce: http://boards.oce.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-strategy/Mbfq2QsO-phreaks-guide-to-runes-for-season-5-2015

Same information but without costs

I don't really get the math around (magic) damage reduction with armor/mr, or health efficiency.

But I'd go with the versatile runes such as hybrid pen marks, scaling armor/health seals, scaling mr glyphs, and whatever quints that floats your boat. (armor, attack speed, health regen, or flat health)

The video is reaaaaaaaaaaaaally helpful, and there's another post around here with a lot of info on runes as well.

Found it: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/tips-tricks/iv59V46E-choosing-runes-i-can-help-you-do-that-better he's awesome

I think you should get a typical AD runes page:

3x Flat Attack Dmg Quints - or 2x Move Speed + 1 Flat Attack Dmg 9x Scaling/Flat Health Seals - or mix with some Flat Armor Seals 9x Flat Attack Dmg/ Flat Armor Pen - or 8x + 1 Critical Mark 9x Flat MR/ Scaling MR Glyphs - or Scaling Health Regeneration Glyphs mix with MR.

Hi all;

Thanks be to all of you for the advice you've put forth. I've followed it and made my first rune page a "Flat Defense/A.D." page and am now working on a similar page for A.P. champions. I've noticed serious improvement in my gameplay since I've begun using my page and am glad I followed your advice.

Best regards, Mr. Beane.

Hello EndlessSorcerer, Ragnola and Melody of Mew;

I'm excited/thankful to have been blessed with your responses only a half-hour after creating this board. While I'm thankful for the recommendations ( and will most likely go with them given all the other texts/vids I've seen have suggested similar starts ) I was hoping to delve a bit deeper into how to specifically buy and use runes for specific champions so when I have proper knowledge when I finally build my first specific page. EndlessSorcerer mentioned the set-up I had in mind was a good page with a specific set-up and I was wondering you three could maybe tell me what that set-up would be good for specifically. I'm hoping that I'll eventually ( sooner rather than later ) be able to know how to match specific runes to specific champion strengths and am looking forward to hearing about how that works.

Thank you for your swift responses, Mr. Beane.

The two most versatile runes are armor seals and magic resist glyphs. You virtually can't go wrong on ANY champion with those two. I suggest you fill both of your pages with those for now, and consider switching it up later when you more pages and IP to work with.

First, wait until you're level 21 to get access to tier 3 runes. Next, you're going to want to buy two sets of runes : AD and AP. When you get more rune pages, you'll be able to get more specific pages.

AD

  • 9x flat AD marks
  • 4x flat armor seals
  • 5x scaling HP seals
  • 9x flat MR glyphs
  • 9x flat AD quints

AP

  • 9x hybrid penetration marks
  • 4x flat armor seals
  • 5x scaling HP seals
  • 9x flat MR glyphs
  • 9x flat AP quints
