Help with lane freezing?

Hey guys,

I'm a bronze player looking to improve my game (so do excuse the noob question :P) , and I was wondering about lane freezing. The skill is pretty self explanatory, keep the minions battling in the same place. But there are several questions I have about this:

  • Say I'm playing a squishy champ; I won't be able to tank the minion wave to keep it in place without risking lots of damage to myself. Is there a different way I can go about freezing my lane?
  • When should I freeze my lane, when is it the most useful?
  • When should I switch to straight out pushing my lane rather than keep it frozen?
  • If this technique is used on me, it seems the only answer is to push the lane hard, which I would assume leaves myself vulnerable to overextension; is there a safe way to unfreeze a lane?

I think that about covers my questions, so thanks in advance!

  1. Yes, if you're a freezing the lane properly then you shouldn't have to tank the minions. Just keep around 3 more minions in their wave than in yours. At this point you just last hit and let your minions slowly die. If there's a small enough difference then your wave will survive until the next wave hits. If the opponent is killing off your minions then you'll need to trim the enemy wave to keep the difference small. Once it gets too big it will kill of your minions and that's when you end up tanking the wave.
  2. Freezing your lane is most useful in two situations. One if you're ahead of your opponent and know you can take them. By freezing the lane you force them to come up if they want any cs. At which point you can kill them. If they realize you'll kill them then they'll stay back and get no cs, win win situation for you. Otherwise if you feel you'll be ganked (no vision) or want to avoid a confrontation in lane then freezing the lane will allow you to stay close to your turret preventing them from going all in on you.
  3. Pushing the lane is good if you opponent roams elsewhere and you can't follow. It's good if you're ranged and can poke them under turret. If you keep up the pressure while the minions are under their turret they'll lose a lot of cs. This strat is especially good in bot lane where likely both champs are ranged. (Caitlyn nidalee wrecks everyone by doing this) The other reason to push the wave is that if you have a larger minion wave than your opponent you will win more trades (especially in top lane but any lane this works). If you have 8 minions and they have 3 then when they attack you near your wave those 8 minions will aggro on them. Provided you trade back they'll take a lot more damage than you. Don't take trades inside your enemies minions and try to force trades when you have them.
  4. Well unless you're an ezreal unfreezing a lane is going to be a bit difficult. You could try calling in your jungler to help you if you feel unsafe. But yes it is this inherent risk that makes freezing a lane such a good strategy. You can avoid it by watching the minions. If you see there's a small minion advantage and you see the opponent is just last hitting. Don't let it get to a freeze point. Push a wave a bit harder and make it reset on the turret.

Hope this helps and good luck on getting out of bronze :)
