Just for teambuilder amusement, all of you who run Alistar Top, what is your build, runes and masteries?

Ad quints mr blues, armor reds and yellows. I like tri force and tankiness on him. You can also go stattik shiv for burst but that is kind of an old build.

I play him as an AP bruiser, and my favorite build is the "burning steak" build (at least, that's what I call it). Your goal with the build is to be a persistent AoE nuisance to the enemy team while having moderate burst and sustain, all while being stupidly tanky.

I start with item 1054, item 1056, item 1029 (plus appropriate potions), or item 2041. Doran's shield is great against ranged champions who will be AA harassing you a lot, Doran's ring is if you are laning against a weak early game champ (like Mundo) who you can bully, cloth armor is for those tough AD lanes (i.e. Panth, Renekton, etc.), and Crystaline flask is great if you are laning against someone you just need to outlast or if you are unsure of the matchup and just want the extra sustain.

First back I try to get a item 3010 every time, and if I'm doing well/get a kill, I'll also try to get boots. Either way, you want Catalyst ASAP.

If you are doing well in lane, rush item 3027 as soon as possible, if you aren't doing great, then skip it and buy yourself a bit of resists (cloth armor or negatron cloak) and work towards your core item; item 3116. Rylai's is what makes this build strong, regardless of what else you build, because it procs on you passive, turning you into an AoE slow field, which is incredibly disruptive in a team fight and helps you stick onto champs really well after you W-Q combo them.

After that, you'll want to pick up item 3136 and then item 3110 or item 3065 depending on the lane matchup. You will always make use of armor when tanking turrets, so it is never bad to pick up FH. SV boosts your self heal and all around sustain quite substantially, and is really too good to pass up most of the time, but it can be switched out for Locket or Banshees depending on the enemy comp.

You'll want to get tier two boots around mid game after towers start going down so that you can roam and gank better, and then you will work towards either more armor if you got SV, or more MR if you got FH.

Late game to keep your damage output up, you'll want to pick up item 3151 for the burn (applies on W, Q, and Passive). If you didn't finish RoA early game (because you were behind) turn your catalyst into a item 3800 instead.

Things to remember:

  • Always get Catalyst no matter what, you can make it into either upgrade and either will be useful.
  • Rylai's is more important than Liandry's. If you have to choose, pick Rylai's almost every time.
  • Remember to build for the match, so be flexible and don't just try to match this build word for word.
