Top 5 supports and why?

Personnaly I would go for Leona, Thresh, Nami, Morgana and Sona in no specific order.

Leona : Even though I just have two games with her and a 50% win rate, she just feel so strong and she's really easy to play. She usually have a weak laning phase until lv6, where you can start to roam or even try to get a kill in your own lane with all that cc. She's the type of champions that can totaly shut down a fed carry (ex:Yasuo) since she can almost perma stun them until they die. Again, she has a great passive, especially early on, great kit filled with cc and even a magic resist/armor boost on her w for extra tankyness. Plus, she fits really well in the hard engage team comps that we see currently.

Thresh : Thresh probably has the most unique and powerful kit for a support. Do I really need to explain why he always has been a top tier support? Save and shield teammates with the lantern, catch up enemies with the hook, slow them and knock them up with Flay and slow them even more with the Death Box. His ult can not only be used for disengage, its also a great way to trap opponents that you got with the hook or even control objectives like dragon or Baron by blocking the enemy's way with the box. He has a strong early game if you can land those hooks, with the exception of playing against a Leona, Morgana or Braum (maybe even Blitzcrank). I would say that Thresh can overpower any supports if you're skilled enough with him since he's the hardest support to play out there.

Nami : Like I said, this is a personal list and maybe a lot of you would've chosen Janna before Nami or any other supports on this list, but let me explain. I feel like Janna has a strongest disengage ult, but thats probably it. She's played a lot in the big scene for her ability to stop any fight, especially vs the God comp (Jarvan4, Gnar and Sivir), but i don't think she's that good when played in solo queue since there's a lot less synergy in solo. While Nami can not only use her ult for disengage, but its a great follow up for any engage your team has or even has a punishing move. Your bubbles can win or break teamfights and is a great weapon for zoning in the early game. Her w is excellent for pokes and trades while laning and her e gives her a great chasing potential with her passive. Over all, Nami has a great ult, great poke and heal, excellent chasing potential (passive) and a powerful stun if you manage to land it.

Morgana : Some might see Morgana more like a mid laner, but her potential in the bot lane is phenomenal in the current meta. with Black Shield, she has the potential to counter, with good reflexes, any hard cc champions like Thresh, Blitzcrank (this one can be a little bit tricky), Leona and Annie (she dosent have a lot of cc, but shes an easy target before lv6 because most Annie players tend to play her aggresively, making it easing to bind her and Black Shield when she trys to stun). If used correctly, Morgana's ult can ravage the entire enemy team in a fight. One major problem with her, its that she needs to survive teamfights until her ult finish channeling. So most will rush Zhonya's to fill that weaknest, but she's really weak until Zhonya's is completed. Thats why I recommend to build her a bit tanky before going for Zhonya's if you can't get a lead. If, accidentaly, you get some early kills or some assits, rushing Zhonya's would be a great idea. Over all, she has few weakness in the current meta, great engage/disengage (3sec binding at max level), Black Shield is pure power when used in the right time and can poke and get gold quite easily early with her w.

Sona : Sona before Annie? Yep. I just really don't like Annie has a support. Sona is great at poking early game (try to rush sheen ;) ) has a viable heal with a shield on her w (even though its the weakest heal and shield in the game), a mouvement speed buff and an extremely strong ultimate. I think thats where Sona's strenght come from (like annie's tibbers) but her over all kit just seems to fit a support better than Annie's. Her early game is pure domination if you play her correctly and getting 6 before the enemy can mean an easy early kill. Great roaming when ult is up, good in fights if you can survive, just a champion that I like a lot

So, which supports do you guys place in the top tier?

Leona > Thresh > Blitzcrank > Zyra > Nami

Thresh and zyra would be my favorites though. Zyra contributes so much damage and thresh is just so much fun to make plays with :)

Strange...I find Sona to be less viable than Alistar Annie Blitzcrank Braum Janna Leona Lulu Morgana Nami Soraka Thresh Velkoz and Zyra

Mine would be Leona Thresh Nami Blitzcrank Morgana

I hate Annie support. Some honorable mentions are Janna and Braum

Support is one of those roles I can't just define as "best" because there are so many things you can need out of a support.

If your team needs teamfight disengage: Janna > Nami > Braum

If your team needs teamfight engage: Annie > Leona > Alistar

If your team needs picks: Blitzcrank > Thresh > Morgana

If your team needs to keep a hypercarry alive: Janna > Morgana > Lulu

If your team wants sustain: Soraka > Nami > Sona

But that leaves out subtleties like: Do you want to do everything you could ever want to do on a support reasonably well? Thresh Do you want to pretend you are a mage? Velkoz Do you want to win or go even in lane against literally anything? Soraka Do you want to be fabulous? Taric Want to play a gimmick all AD comp? Gangplank + item 3050

Janna - So much disengage and makes melee's life a living hell

Thresh - very good at creating picks, has pretty much everything you want in a support

Morgana - One time I got hit by a binding, my team reported me for AFK. 'Nuff said

Nami - very good sustain, good engage and disengage

Leona - one of the best engage supports in the game
