Melee vs ranged champions?

Hi. I'm level 25 and have in the past mained annie, heimerdinger, and corki. Now i'm trying to learn how to play akali. I'm having a lot of trouble in lane against ranged champions. Once I hit 6 I am fine, but it is before then is when i feed. I feel like if I just poke with q, they just poke back with more damage (annie q stun w) than I could hope to accomplish. My cs is fine and averages around 60 at 10 min which is good for a player at my level. Any tips to wreck in mid? How can i harass when w is down? Thanks for reading!

Alright cool. When I started out, my goal was 100 at 20 minutes, so 60 is just a step above it I guess, good work! The biggest concept you need to understand is when to accept the enemy zone and stand back, or when to go up and hit free cs.

Being a ranged champion, you're at a disadvantage to ranged champions. They'll harass you with autoattacks and try to trade with abilities -- try to farm and they'll kill you or force you to recall. Early game, try to play it safe when dealing with ranged laners. You can drop a few cs here and there if they're in a place where you'll take a lot of damage for trying to reach them. A good time to either farm/harass is when the enemy uses an important spell and is left vulnerable. If a Twisted Fate pulls a blue card, you know it's down for a few seconds, so you can walk up and secure farm for a few seconds safely. If you can afford to harass him in that time, even better! This means you can kill him the second you hit level 6, so he needs to base. If you can't hit cs, just wait patiently in experience range to not fall too far behind and practice lasthitting under tower. What Akali loses pre-6, she makes up after 6, so wait for that powerspike slowly, do what you can, and go hard as soon as you get it.

This is just Akali. She's designed specifically so that she doesn't do well pre 6, but is unstoppable afterwards.

In general, Akali can't compete with most ranged champs before 6, but here are some things that can help:

  • If the enemy doesn't have any hard CC, you can all-in them when you get the chance, but that chance is uncommon.
  • Avoid harass; auto-attacks can't really be avoided so just manage the minion wave to work outside their range, and spells almost always have an animation or a given method of avoiding.
  • Make the most of your passive spell vamp by last-hitting with your spells. Often if you can out-sustain them, you can go from prey to predator.
  • If you're going to get CC'ed make sure it's in a safe place, like under your shroud or turret.

If you're losing by only 20 cs by the time you reach level 6, you've "won" lane and should out scale your opponent in damage. Use your stealth cloud thingy on the minion wave to cs safely.

Thanks to all for the helpful tips! I just learned alkali and I think I was just not used to her weaknesses compared to other champions.
