How do you counter a shaco?

Just played against my brother. Him being AP shaco and me going AD Wukong.

Couldn't get near him without his turrets poking me and when I could, he would either turn invisible or throw his knife at me. I Couldn't play defensively either, as he would just keep overextending and deprive me of cs.

Looking back, I feel like building magic resist should've been my top priority. I also think poking him with my E then cloaking would have been a better combo to use on him early game.

Can you guys teach me anything about Shaco or Wukong that could help me in our next 1v1?

Try a Hexdrinker.

he has low hp so you can burst him. build merc treads and a hexdrinker. his boxes have a high cooldown so you can pop them and walk away until they time out. while they're down you can engage on him and do a ton of damage, maybe kill him.

careful though because shaco can also be built as AD. tabi and sunfire would be good choices then.

this is all if it's just a 1v1 which I believe you're talking about. outside of 1v1 you'd probably want to approach shaco in a different way.

Lane: For lane you should always start crystalline flask and health pots due to his poke advantage. Start q since it will give you a lot of early burst for trades. Next get Q then W and level standard, R>E>Q>W. I would also suggest going for Life steal Quints in order to help survive early. Rushing a tiamat will give you good sustain and wave clear. Get a pink ward to place in the side bush to spot him if he tries to go inadvisable on you, it will also help in clearing his boxes. After tiamat build black cleaver, and a defensive item if he is going ad build Randuins and if he is ap build a banshee. Your last damage item should be a last whisper. Your all in at level 6 will probably kill him if your able to knock him up before he can clone out.

Jungle: For jungle its very important that you ward the entrances to your jungle. This will spot him coming in so you can play defensive. Also pink ward defensively so spot him when he is invisible. Remember that raptor buff give you vision too so try to get it on cd as well. Other then that play safe in jungle and try to ward your lanes to counter gank him. If you can predict where he is and counter he will be completely screwed since you out scale him pretty hard.

Might not be a fantastic thing to help you get your edge in the 1v1, but if you get ahead, start just pressing 'S' out of no-where. It'll scare people into thinking you used your clone and they'll have to back off.

E+W and if he uses invisibility drop a pink. upgraded sweeper will work too.

Mixing up your combo a bit will help - as jungle wukong i used to w in brush, eq onto them, try to add a few extra aa's, then leave. In arams, though, eq'ing first, then w to leave ends up making you survive much better - plus, with wukong you can also stop-juke ince he's used to your w. (Stop-juking is a techinque where you run away, then hit s near some brush patches or in a place where you would normally w - if done right, they walk past you expecting you to have used your clone, and you can run the other way.)

Against a shaco, unfortunately, especially ap shaco, there isn't a ton you can do because his boxes hurt so damn much - ap shaco's weakness tends to be dealing with more than one champ. (also, as others have said, sweeper and pinks. or oracles/lightbringer, if you're on abyss.)

Try mixing up your combo some to punish him for over-extending, and MR early is also a solid choice.

pink wards and a hexdrinker would be a good opening.

I've played AP Shaco top, and he thrives on people playing agressive. Short exchanges also work well, because he doesn't have any sustain. If you're playing Wukong, I would suggest rushing a Hexdrinker, and outscaling, because Wukong is a lot better late game.
