Maining A Champion

Countering is not for low ELO, 99% of the time.

I'd be more afraid of the person who has mastered fighting with a broomstick, than a mediocre swordsman.

Timing! If you main a champion, you know the precise animation times for each ability. Allowing you to better react to situations.

No matter who, each champion has a few unfavorable match ups. You should off-main at least 1 champion that counters your Main's counters, for when you are picking into them. "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" though you would also not be wrong to stick with your main because your experience may outweigh the counter.

Choosing a main is simple. Go to the website op.gg, look at your win rates across all modes. You should probably be maining your highest win rate champion, given the percentage is based on a decent number of games.

I disagree with maining your highest win rate champ, that doesn't always mean that the player played that champ well. The most important thing in my opinion is that you need to like the champ. If you like a champ and enjoy playing them, then you'll always be trying your best.

To keep my response short, my main is Rumble and I've been playing him enough to the point 90% of the champion roster(including some supposed counters) are little to no problem for me in a solo lane face-off, or even duo lane if I get bored enough to do bot Rumble either as an apc or support.

I can play him top, mid, jungle, and bot with great success. I main him mid in solo Q because no one is prepared for the Rumble roams when I reach level 6, as well as keeping my duel partner in check considering my knowledge of nearly every match up with my Rumble.

It also helps that people that play Zed and LB cannot touch my Rumble as I usually outdamage/outtank them 1v1 when people complain about how powerful they are.

It's a very useful niche mid pick that I've made into a strong 'go-to' general pick.

I usually try to be good at a few champions. each being able to do 4/5 roles on the rift.

Personal example, I am a riven one trick pony with 2 accounts currently in s1/g5 and this ugly stepchild of an account, anyways I get "counterpicked" very often especially on this account with someone picking Garen, but because of my familiarity with the matchup I come out far ahead and have a much higher impact in the game than my opposition.

Moral of the story you are better playing something you are comfortable with than being concerned over a matchup. You will win more lanes, snowball more and know how to use your snowball on a champ you are comfortable with.

Especially in unranked/low elo, it's better to play someone you're comfortable with and know how to play than the "correct" counterpick. You'll feel more confident and be in a better mindset to make important plays than if you're playing a counter who you aren't familiar with.
