Ganking as Master Yi

Hey guys. So, what with the release of the new project skins, I've been looking into playing Master Yi more--he seems to be in a pretty decent place, as far as assassins go (Rengar seems to have a bit more utility, but Yi can still do his job well).

I've been struggling with playing Yi, though, and I was looking for advice. Primarily, I play bruisers/tank junglers (who are very gank-heavy at early levels) and I feel as though that's part of my problem; worrying too much about trying to gank as Yi, when he's really not much good as a ganker (or at least, he doesn't SEEM to be--that might be part of my problem).

I'm trying to figure out when it's good to try and farm as Yi versus trying to gank--the conventional wisdom seems to only be to gank if you are assured a kill, because otherwise Yi is generally better off farming. Unfortunately, that leaves the question of what to do if your lanes are struggling--do you try and farm as Yi in that case, or do you give up stacking your devourer to try and go relieve pressure (wasting time on stacking your devourer, but helping your team get some breathing room)?

I also think part of the issue is my choice of summoner spell--it seems like smite/teleport is really the way to go on Yi, because it allows you to free-farm the jungle while still giving you the option to quickly respond to gank opportunities.

Mostly, the situation I find myself in when ganking is that I'm not able to kill the enemy quickly enough before they back off, and I wind up with no kills or assists, and then ultimately end up behind because I lost the opportunity for more sated stacks. Generally, my rule of thumb is to only gank when I have red buff and Highlander up--but even that seems like it doesn't work for me the majority of the time.

This may be just a skill-based thing, and the only solution is more practice. But if any experienced Yi players went through this and have advice on what to do, please let me know! I'm all ears. =)

Thanks for all of your feedback, guys! I'm going to incorporate it and keep an eye out for any more tips. If I meet with success, I'll let you all know!

I am going to give some context, I main Jungle, and had an unhealthy obsession of playing Yi in season 3, I will share from experience how I generally handled situations you asked.

I've been struggling with playing Yi, though, and I was looking for advice. The goal of Yi is to only gank if the enemy is pushed or if your laner is capable of dealing CC to kill them. It is entirely possible to just outright kill someone in ganks, but it's hardly likely.

Ganks aren't always about getting kills, simply showing up to exert some pressure on the enemy, maybe waste a flash etc, can be valuable for your allies too.

In the case of everyone losing lane it's best to choose the lane that will be more valuable late game to help, commonly this is your mid laner who can later roam bot to help them out as well. In between ganks it's ESSENTIAL to pick up the scuttle grab for the extra stacks and farm.

If no ganks are possible, try farming up the best you can and hope for a turn around, but this is meant as a last resort.

I also think part of the issue is my choice of summoner spell--it seems like smite/teleport is really the way to go on Yi, because it allows you to free-farm the jungle while still giving you the option to quickly respond to gank opportunities.

Never honestly seen teleport on Yi, but if I play as a jungler wanting to kill I'd replace that teleport with ignite or exhaust to help out with ganks. It's really different for everyone, I recommend experimenting.

It's important to pick Yi into team comps that will actually work for him, if you pick him on a team with little to no CC, you are probably going to have a bad time, just like picking him against a Nautilus Malphite or Alistar would be terrible ideas as well.

If your team isn't getting the CC, but your most comfortable with Yi then hopefully they have enough damage to help kill opponents off.

Thanks for the good and thoughtful post! I've found myself in the same situation since the release of the project skins. I've always loved playing master yi, but have always had mixed success with him. Recently, I've been trying some new builds that have really bumped up my Yi game!

Previously, I would always build dmg, dmg, and MOAR DMG!! Haha... While this allowed me to slaughter ADCs, it left me extremely squishy, and I would usually be blown up 2 seconds after getting any kills. Recently, I came across a Cinderhulk build for Yi. I was a little skeptical, but decided to give it a go. And now, I can't think of playing Yi any other way.

Basically it's, Cindherhulk with Skirmisher's Sabre, into boots (ninja tabis or berserkers), then BOtRK, Frozen Mallet, and Black Cleaver. Last item is optional, but I've been having great success with some of the new juggernaut items. Sterak's Gage being one of my favorite, because the only thing better than project Yi, is a GIANT project Yi! Haha.

With this, you can basically 1v1 almost anyone with tons of dmg, extreme stickiness with frozen mallet and ult movement speed/Q, and with all the extra health, you can make it out of almost any sticky situation with health to spare. It was so refreshing to not feel the "Get fed or feed" feeling I usually played Master Yi with. Give it a try if it sounds interesting to you! 👍 It has made me love my Project: Yi skin so much more. I have far less people telling me to "refund my skin" now. Haha! Good luck & cheers!

Here's my disclaimer first: Im a jungle main, but I don't play Yi for that same reason: Hard to gank slippery enemies

But I can give you some general jungle tips

  1. Look at how your ally and enemy matches up in raw skill. If theyre about even, then 1 gank can snowball your ally.

  2. Look for champions that can carry the entire game (fizz, kata, maybe viktor, etc). Most of the time, if these champions fall behind early, they can be useless. You don't even need to successfully kill them, just make sure your laner is winning. If he still can't, leave his lane alone and focus on everything else, since he probably doesn't know how to win in the first place. ...So if you have a fizz on your team, and he's in a bad match up, maybe give him 3 ganks just to help him survive. If the enemy has a fizz, wait in brush and get him if he goes in for a trade.

  3. Never gank for an ally who sucks mechanically. He'll probably ping you all game. Ignore him and report for toxicity

  4. Gank for allies who could win lane mechanically. The idea is to just give them the chance to win the lane

  5. Jungle efficiency if all lanes suck and lose on their own. You can't relieve pressure off of everyone, and if they push, they better ward or they deserve to die to a gank, etc
