After playing a few games ive come across the option to choose between different champions. Who did you choose when you first started building up your IP? Which do you recommend & Why? Share your thoughts

Annie was my first champ. Her Q made it really easy to CS at early levels and allowed you to stay safe with it's long range. Even if my lane was 0-0 I'd still have a huge item lead because all you have to do is stay back and use your Q to last hit.

I vote learning to support first. You will not be in a role where you can carry (atleast not directly) so the pressure wont be on you right off and you can get into the more complex parts of learning to play. You also are able to learn good habits like knowing when to go all out and when you should cut your losses.

Kayle

Can go top mid jungle or support. Sustained AP damage or burst Utility - heal, speed, save lives, aoe armor/MR shred

DocRedgrave10/29/2014, 8:12:52 PM4 votes

Probably the simplest, cheapest, and most versatile champion in the game is Kayle. She's capable of doing every role effectively besides AD carry and her scaling is extremely good.

Lapison10/29/2014, 8:45:58 PM4 votes

For me I always gravitated towards support options (because people like calling everything else and I'm a filler). So I'm pretty biased towards a support first.

When I first started looking to increase my champ pool, Annie support was in the meta, so I got her for 450 IP. Even though she's not as powerful as a support, she still remains quite good as a mid laner. I also picked up Soraka at the time (because I had 450 IP to blow and I didn't really see any reason why not), and after her rework she's actually pretty fun, IMO.

A bit pricier and more specialized was Janna at 1350 IP (who's almost exclusively support). I liked her inherent peel and CC, so I got her too. Her disengage is insane (but don't expect to get kills on her).

Of course, if you're looking for 0 IP options, you could like LoL on Facebook for Tristana, subscribe to LoL's Youtube for Alistar, and something else that's slipping my mind (maybe follow on Twitter?) to get Garen.

That's my two cents.

Depends on the preferred role but I always tell those I know a few people it is good to master with low cost is...

  1. Ryze to learn about spell combinations.
  2. Twisted Fate to learn to look the mini-map.
  3. Tristana to learn how to carry.
  4. Teemo to learn how to value vision.
  5. Soraka to learn that other's come before yourself when you are supporting.
  6. Alistar to learn how to peel.
  7. Warwick to learn how to jungle.
  8. Nasus/Veigar to learn how to value farming.
  9. Shen to learn the value of communicating with your team AND acting without your team telling you (if that is a problem of yours and yes I know Shen is moderately costly but he is a really good champion to play for the listed reasons)

450 IP champs: Annie, Ashe, Garen, Kayle, Master Yi, Nunu, Poppy, Ryze, Sivir, Soraka, and Warwick

1350 IP champs: Jax, Janna, Malphite, Amumu, Cho'Gath, Fiddlesticks, Dr. Mundo, Evelynn, Alistar, Nasus, Sion, Singed, Morgana, Teemo, Tristana, Tryndamere, Twisted Fate, Udyr, Veigar, Taric, Xin Zhao, and Zilean

Buy the first ones you're interested in, and try out other champs of the role you like best when they're free. I'd recommend going with a ranged champ first, like Ashe, Sivir, or Annie, but if you want tanks, go for Garen, Poppy, Ryze and Warwick.

DrCyanide10/29/2014, 5:32:13 PM3 votes

I've got a nasty tendency to prefer champions that are full price. It's just that the champions I'm drawn to seem to be on the newer end of things.

I also hate having to get into melee range to fight, so ranged champions are almost a requirement for me.

... I also dislike relying on auto attacks, which pretty much limits me to Mages, Supports or AD casters.

The Chin10/29/2014, 9:24:48 PM2 votes

Annie Great mid and support Ryze Amazing top Warwick My go-to jungler Ashe If you need a cheap ADC Ashe will do the trick... You can learn the fundamentals on her but I'd recommend getting a more expensive ADC if you like the role

Lucian Caitlyn Jinx are great ADC picks but not cheap

Dryditch10/29/2014, 5:49:08 PM2 votes

I started out playing marksmen, since my first buy was Twitch. Since then I've really switched over to AP champions with a bit of tank to em. For me, that means Malphite's my #1 pick.

I also really like playing as Teemo, but he's basically satan and death mixed into one tiny furball of hate. :)

EddisonMasters10/29/2014, 5:59:06 PM2 votes

I prefer a mixture of range and melee....hence transform champions seem to be my thing. My all time favourite champion has to be Gnar as he is the ultimate transform champion in my honest opinion.

Nucleophilic atk10/29/2014, 10:55:23 PM2 votes

Fiddlesticks

Aspynn10/30/2014, 12:00:08 AM2 votes

I think the first champ that I ever bought was sivir, just cuz I was like "Oh shit, that girl looks badass, and her attacks are really cool." I then got told not to play sivir bot and to play garen or something bot... LOL Oh the level 3 days... I would put another point towards annie to get first. She can support or mid, and is very dangerous in both roles. Super easy to play and very easy to absolutely wreak face and be a lane bully. Also make sure to get warwick and yi, both can carry games insanely easy (well more yi, but ww is a fantastic ganker that helps you learn how to jungle and gank.) I would advise learning the jungle role early, because I only started practicing at like level 20 and at level 30 now I'm not even very good or familiar with the jungle role as far as gank and camp rotations, when to dragon etc. Make sure to get your free champs like everyone else has said, they save a lot of IP!

SnazzyTheMister10/30/2014, 6:31:37 AM2 votes

i disagree with learning support first cus i feel like it teaches new players bad habits, they tend to feel safer at range with buddy and it holds off learning basic mechanics which isn't good for player growth. the 2v2 aspect makes things harder not easier.

i suggest top where you are somewhat out of the way from jungle action, more often vs melees and you can learn your basic mechanics like last hitting and warding and what items to buy.

other advice for new players is that you need to learn your basics, but don't be afraid to play a bunch of different champs while doing it. thats what the free week is there for the basics are what they are cus they are relevant to all champions.

play melees you are gona need to get in the thick of it at some point. one of the best ways to learn your limits is to push them, go hard sometimes, maybe you feed this game maybe you get some kills the important thing is you are learning.

i realize this is somewhat contradictory to what most people tell new players but you'll learn more about the game this way and you wont end up level 30 never having played a solo lane and only a loose idea of how to last hit.

cho'goth is a nice melee tanky fighter type champ who isn't to expensive at 1350. other easy and cheap champs to start on include annie for mage types,** garen** for ad tanky fighter type (where cho is an ap). for adc they are somewhat all the same but ashe and sivir are NOT good adcs to learn on, right now lucian is probably the best but hes 6300. warwick, nunu, and fiddle are easy junglers to start on with little to no rune dependence unlike most junglers.

touching on runes for a second i think the single best rune page to start with is a ad quints and marks, flat armor seals, and flat magic resist glyths. you can use this on anyone without wasting any of the stats tho it might not be the most ideal but that will come post level 20.

ive gone on for a bit longer then i meant to here i hope this helps those new players looking for a place to start.

DONT START ON ASSASSINS!! GO PLAY VS PEOPLE!! (if they are mean to you just mute them)

GoldenLeSpoink10/29/2014, 9:59:02 PM1 votes

I have loved playing Yi until I got to level 30. I might get bashed for it, but Master Scrub does take some skill to play; You can't just Q into 5v1 and expect to even take one out [CC to STRONK] Anyway, he is a great starting champion for newcomers as he allows you to think before you go all in, even if you are super fed. Not to mention, he has an escape and also allows some outplay ability, for those who still want to fight even if they can't win.

Squirvizard10/29/2014, 10:03:21 PM1 votes

Edit: Nevermind.

GrandMa5TR10/31/2014, 3:22:28 AM1 votes

I would say you should play first when available because it teaches you fundamental's of the game. If you need low IP champ's Garen and Teemo are good early buy's.

This straight up depends on whether you are going to be playing ranked or normals.

Ranked is all about the most powerful and efficient champs.

Annie is a good example of that and ryze.

Normals is all about what you want to play rather than whats the best.

ModWulf Helhammer10/29/2014, 11:28:39 PM1 votes

When I started playing, I sucked. So I picked Warwick and Nasus because they had life-steal, which I thought would help me sustain myself (spoiler: I didn't, because I sucked). The first champ that I ACTUALLY learned how to play was Katarina (not sure if that is in your "low cost" requirement). After a while of playing her, I started saving up for Quinn for a high-cost ADC champ. Right now I am trying to decide on a new mid-laner, preferably a mage, because Kat can get zoned out of lane pretty hard by ranged champs if you're not that good at her (which I'm not to good at anymore, because I've been playing Quinn too much :P)

Now, if you want a pretty safe lane to play in (if you have higher level players that you play normals with) then Top is for you. Whenever I played with my level 30 friends when I was pretty low, that's where I played. Now if you are playing bots, pretty much anywhere is good; play whichever champ you want, and if you are low summoner level, play them wherever you want. Enjoy the meta free game while you can.

However, I don't recommend playing bots for long, because then you will be level 20, and will have played hardly any PvP games (which is what I did). If you want to be safe, play them until level 12 at the MAX, because then you will have flash unlocked, which is pretty handy for a lot of games. Not necessary, but very widely used.

OblongOtter10/29/2014, 11:53:50 PM1 votes

Warwick was my first champ. I was awful with him, was like "screw this" and then got Annie and fell in love with her. She's so much fun with the stun and that Q. You don't even need to land Tibbers at early summoner levels/Bronze. I also loved Trist, (waaay before she was cool, back when her Q had a mana cost,) Akali, TF, Cho'gath, and Mundo's a lot of fun (keep his W off most of the time) although I didn't discover him until rather recently.

EndlessSorcerer10/31/2014, 9:01:28 PM1 votes

From the 450IP-1350IP champions:

Ryze - Strong bully, pretty low skill floor, all targetted spells, pretty tanky

Sivir - Good pusher when enemies aren't great at last hitting under tower, easy to chase and escape, spellshield is good for blocking obvious spells

Jax - Strong duelist, scales extremely well, easy mechanics

Morgana - Good support, good CC and damage, pushes well when enemies aren't good at last hitting under tower

Taric - Good mix of tankiness, CC, and sustain. He can 1v1 many champions late game. Safe early.

Evelynn - If you jungle, a lot of people don't know how to ward to defend against your ganks at lower levels. Good burst and sustained damage. You probably need runes to clear safely, though.

Annie - Strong burst and AoE damage, good CC, somewhat tanky

Cho'gath - High sustain and pushing, good AoE CC, some burst, new players probably aren't very good at dodging his skillshots

You should also know that you can get Tristana and Alistar for free by subscribing to Riot's Facebook and Youtube accounts.

Kat Head10/30/2014, 12:12:24 AM1 votes

Annie is probably the best, she can be played in any of the lanes. Mid, sup and top are good places for Annie, so learning her will allow you to play a lot of different roles.

GhostCadillac10/29/2014, 8:54:16 PM1 votes

I honestly don't know who I use most often, but I do know that I started out my first 100 games with Cho'(I played him as a tank and over the years, I learned I can also play him as a mage). The reason? Not even I know why, but something about him made him fun to play for me. Although, I guess landing your Q W R or W Q R combo for your team to collect kills ain't so bad.

thedirtypelican11/1/2014, 7:07:00 PM1 votes

my first champ was garen and he was a ton of fun. U could run up to someone and q them and all they could do is basic attack. and I used to build him super tanky so that I wouldn't take much damage anyway and that got me realy liking tank champions.

4p310/29/2014, 9:12:50 PM1 votes

His Nerf is insignificant and will still leave him being a top tier top laner, unfortunately top lane has a small pool of great champions. This is coming from a s3/s4 Diamond Ryze main. 20 base of Q is fine and I'll take that as a nerf anyday. They nerf him by season. Mid lane Ryze got an enormous nerf, now he is only played top and is good at it so he'll be slightly nerfed. He is annoying to lane against i'll say that Ryze

If you wanna jungle, I recommend Nunu. He's super safe, can buff your friends, has a fun ult, and slows your targets. Plus no skillshots.

Alternatively, I love playing Malphite. He's pretty easy to use, also has a really cool ult, and is a big rock monster. His early lane game can be hard though. Play super safe and defensive until after level 6 and some extra armor and you'll faceroll.

Pick up Ashe, as she has a longer AA range than most ADC's, a slow, and her ult arrow is great for initiating fights safely or winning 1v1's. As others have said, Annie is useful to learn a mage for, and picking up a support champ or two is something you'll never regret. :)

Let me just say this...

Trust me, get him down and you'll get to diamond quick. :) hope that helps
