Looking for solid ways to deal with Annie Mid

Up until recently I didn't encounter many Annie players in the mid lane, which is weird since she's got such a high win rate and a fairly high pick rate in lower elo. The few I did come across must have been playing her for the first time because I did a pretty good job stomping them each game I did come across them.

Long story short, I'm looking to find solid counters for Annie. I find that Xerath works fairly well because you're never in range for her to burst you, but I could use some better alternatives as well.

I think what I'm looking for most of all is an explanation as to why whatever champion you'd chose would in fact be a counter so I can understand what part of them is the counter, like for Xerath with his range.

I appreciate the help.

well, you would want a champion with a crap ton of burst but also some kind of escape. but really no champion counters annie exactly because she has a point and click spell and too huge aoe spells which makes it easy to land her stun. champion that may give you an edge in lane are poking and zoning champs are good (azir, xerath,), but bursty/assassin are great as well (zed, talon). however there really isn't much counter play to a stun and once annie gets a few items she becomes a assassin with her super high AP ratio. mainly like you said, it all depends on you and the annie, who ever is a better player will snowball better.

edit: assasins work well because annie is very squishy, look if she has her stun or not and try to hit lv 6 before her and as long as she just used her stun, you can go in and burst her down.

Poke works well against her when it comes to some long range champs as she's not terribly mobile...so if you're countering against an Annie things like Xerath or Zed or a Varus can work really well.

The key to her is watching for her stun and baiting it out....you can tell she has her stun up when you see the little whisps circling around her. Note the whisps are white...don't confuse it with her fire shield. Try to bait it out by faking going in...see if you can get her to blow it on something...or just wait it out until she's forced to clear it. She's a lot less dangerous with it down.

You've already gotten the basic concept, which is that Annie has short range spells as far as mages go. So the way to go is to out range her. The best champs to do this with imo, are Azir Xerath Brand Malzahar

I also recommend champions that are extremely difficult to burst and have no trouble retaliating in-kind Kassadin Orianna Viktor Chogath Galio Morgana Swain

In my experience it's best to play champions that give Annie a hard time due to some form of innate tankiness, sustain, damage reduction, and are difficult to bully, or are successful bullies themselves. The champions I listed generally have no problem engaging on Annie themselves, surviving her in the laning phase, and in teamfights cannot be insta-gibbed unless extremely far behind.

As with any other point and click burst champion, the matchup forces you into buying some resistance against them. Even outranging her, she's just going to flash onto you. Get item 3028 or item 3111 or something that takes the heat out of her combo, and then track her ult cooldown timer.

Best tip I can think for against an Annie is to only trade when you know her passive isn't up so you know she wont win the trade. Also like SSJTribe said the best way to win against Annie is range with Azir or the burst from Brand Leblanc Chogath summoner 14

As an Annie main I hate the following matchups:

Lux Xerath Velkoz Brand Leblanc Chogath Galio Heimerdinger Lissandra Azir

There's more. General idea is now that Annie's AA has been shortened she has absolutely no way to reach these champions without losing 50% HP. When summoner 4 is on CD, she needs to lane extremely passively.
