PSA on ganking- Please read!
Hey guys! When I'm in game, nothing makes me more angry than when my team's jungler just walks into lane without any warning and begins to skirmish the opposing laner without my assistance, often giving up a kill and wasting an opportunity. I've just been seeing this happen so often lately that I decided to make this post: my guide on how to gank. This doesn't necessarily apply just to junglers, (but rather anyone who is roaming in game), but since junglers do most of the ganking i figured id focus on them.
Now at this point you may think, "why should i listen to this kid?" Well then fine, don't listen to me! See if I care! (okay, i may care a little...) But i can guarantee you (with 99% certainty) that these tips will help you have a more successful game. Anyway, lets get into it.
Now to start, there are, in my opinion, three basic ways to gank a lane. This may vary for different champion's abilities, but for simplicity's sake we'll stick to these three for now. Of course positioning will change as the game progresses, but these are good for laning phase.
- River ganks- This is the gank you'll use the majority of the time. Usually this is best when the lane isn't very pushed one way or the other. Sit in the bush near the river until an opportunity arises. Sometimes your laners will initate a fight and then you can come in, or sometimes you'll need to start the fight using your slow/stun or a gap closer.
- Lane ganks- In this gank, you will walk in by passing your tower and go into the brush. This is a good strategy for when your laner is pushing. You must make sure you are not spotted on your way into the bushes, and these ganks usually require a good engage, as you do not have as much room to chase down the enemy, but this is a good way to catch an opponent off guard.
- Tri brush gank- Now which tri brush you go in depends on which side of the map you're on: for top lane this is the bush going near baron from the river and for bottom this is the bush going near dragon from river. It will depend on which side of the map your team started on, but these ganks are good for a number of things: getting behind an enemy that is pushing and cutting of their escape, attacking opponents while they are under your tower, or diving an an enemy tower. A good support will usually ward their tri brush, so be careful!
One thing you should always do before ganking is make sure the minion wave has settled. By this i mean make sure the closest minion wave has come into lane and is fighting your minions. Why is this important? Lets take a look at an example- I'm Rammus, sitting in the river brush trying to gank for my top laner. I decide now is as good a time as any to go in, so i charge up my Powerball and roll in. BUT WAIT! The enemy minion wave is coming in and i hit a minion instead of the opposing laner. I feel stupid and everyone laughs at me, and I never play LOL again. If you're thinking, "How am i going to see the enemy minion wave?" just remember that your wave reflects the enemy's, so if your wave is about to come into lane, so is the enemy's.
Junglers PLEASE give your team a heads-up before you gank! A simple ping or a few words in chat can make worlds of difference. Sometimes laners are focused on CSing or poking down the enemy, and will not realize you came down to their lane.
Here are a few more things to think about before you decide to gank: -Am I on top of an enemy ward? Do they know I'm here? -Are any enemies missing on the map? Are they setting a trap for me?
- If i go in, is my laner in a position to assist me in a fight?
I could go on for days, but i think this will suffice for now. If you've read this far, I thank you. I realize most veteraned players know this stuff by now, but like I said i was getting very annoyed with players not knowing how to gank. If you agree with me or learned something, PLEASE UPVOTE! Feel free to comment below. Thanks, and have a good day! :)
