Coaching for Support?

Hello, I am level 6 & have been picking up the Support class. I am very very new & inexperienced. I try to ask for tips in the games I play but often just get trolled or told to play bots. Bots are too easy, & real players are a lot more difficult. I have been playing Lux, Janna, & Lulu(I only own Janna, Lux & Lulu were free). I have the most "luck with Lux" but feel as though she is a very easy Champion to begin with. Any experienced Supports who would be willing to help me with the Support role as a whole would be appreciated. I'm xPokket in game. I apologize if this type of thread doesn't belong here.

Just a suggestion, if you liked playing Lux then you should also enjoy Morgana, she has a few similar skills and is generally stronger in the current meta :-) and she's also quite cheap. If you like reading about supporting, try browsing through different guides on mobafire or similar websites, they usually offer a lot of general tips about supporting liek ward placement, item build, etc.

Try to save up for one of the top tier supports. Leona, Thresh, Morgana, If you like the basic Lux skill set, i recommend you picking up Annie, Shes a Steroid Lux, with her CC and Nuke potential.

Don't worry, I think the thread is in the right place.

Anyways... here are some basics.

  1. Try to push to level 2 without messing up any cs for the adc. Level 2 for bot lane is the first wave+3 melee minions. If you know you will hit level 2 first, enter a bush right before you level and move forwards and try to get as much damage as you can before the enemy backs off. Try to let your adc know that you are going to do this, because you don't want to be fighting a 1v2 even with the level advantage.

  2. Keep a tabs on enemy summoner spells and type timers in chat. Flash has a 5 minute cooldown, or 4.5 minute cooldown for supports (if they max summoners insight mastery, which most do). Heal has a 4 minute cooldown. Ignite has a 3.5 minute cooldown (3:09 for max summoners insight mastery). Timers allow you to find opportunities when you have more resources than your enemy. Also, try to force your enemy to use any long cooldowns that might give teammates an advantage.

  3. Know other timers. Globals ults, support ults, and adc ults are the most important. The enemies main "catching skills" and "damage skills" are also important to know the timer on as they can be considered windows of opportunity. Also let your jungler know the time/location of any wards you know are placed. This is slightly outdated, but it should give you a general idea. Most of the data can be looked up on the wiki. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AlJVK9exgbpddENRR1dKUVotVXJGODZpLXllNEN6YkE&output=html

  4. Use your trinket ward around 3:10-3:30 depending on jungler clear time. Try to keep all entrances warded once you have sight stone.

  5. If the enemy has more minions stay closer to y our range minions and try not to auto attack the enemy. Auto attacks trigger minion aggro, but spells usually don't. If you have more minions, stand slightly behind dying minions and move up as the enemy adc is going to last hit, auto attack them, use the spell you have most points in (lux e/ lulu q). If you are short ranged you have to take a different approach (Janna self shield> autos). For skill shot champions (morgana/ thresh/ blitz), try to look for when they have to walk around the ranged minion line. In Thresh's case if you have more minions you can walk up and flay> auto. I'm not too acquainted with kill lane champions to give exact details on them.

  6. Try to keep an eye on your ward timers as much as possible. It is better to place a new ward before the old ward falls.

  7. Watch the enemy jungler. If they are top and your jungler is bot side, you can usually get dragon if mid/ bot are in no position to contest it (be wary if you are low and the bot/ mid is not. Also, you can sometimes sneak deep wards in if you know where the enemy jungler is and bot just recalled or something. You can also learn a lot from looking at their current buffs and cs, but you can always learn that later.

  8. Stay objective focused with warding. If you want to take a tower top, ward around top. If dragon is spawning in 1.5 minutes, ward around the dragon area (and if it is safe enough, the enemy jungle). After 20 minutes, baron should almost always have at least 1 ward in the area (try to get your teammates to help with this).

  9. If the enemy support is not a kill lane champion (leona/ blitz/ thresh/ etc), look for opportunities to roam and help another lane. Only do this if you have faith in the fact your adc won't do something stupid. Ask them first, because some get really annoyed by roaming. If you see a teammate in trouble and you think you can make it in time to help, ping your adc to be careful and use "On my way" ping to help them.

  10. Slows are best used after gap closers (usually, unless they have followup cc.. then you want to prevent them from getting close). Knock-ups are best to cancel gap closers.

  11. Assume everyone not on the map is close to you unless you have reason to believe otherwise.

  12. Use enemy logic against them. If an ally is visible to the enemy team and is pushed up, they are most likely to be a target. You can sometimes change the course of a fight/ save them.

  13. Learn how much damage adc/ support combos can do, including auto attacks. If your adc is being focused, make sure you are kiting backwards while auto attacking. If a skill is not required immediately, use skills when auto attacks are "on cooldown".

That's all I can think of right now...
