Transition to 3 fingers

Am2Sexy·10/29/2014, 7:35:05 AM·1 votes·2,376 views

I'm a bronze player, and i noticed that ALL Pro players use only 3 fingers. So i try to copy.

  • I made the move from static to free cam (huge learning curve)
  • Also had a custom key binding set to "fit me", but set everything back to default + quick cast

Due to the fact that my fingers get lost during team fights my "skill level" (if any) took a massive dive. *I resigned ranked games. only play norms & Ai's

Q: How much time/games would i need to get comfortable? Who would be an excellent champ to practice?

Not being able to show my true skill and being dump on rly sucks, lol *Any tips for this humble noob that you found useful over time would be appreciated, Ty.

I never even noticed that I only used three fingers, to be honest. Didn't even know it was a thing until I popped into this thread just now. Then I looked at how my fingers were positioned in a match, and sure enough, three fingers. What I noticed about my finger placement/usage was this :

Pinky finger is unused, laying to the side and atop my left ctrl key. Ring finger is used for Q and only Q Middle finger is used for W and only W Pointer finger is used for R, but also for both smart ping keys (G and V) and locking/unlocking the camera Thumb is in position on the space bar for no apparent reason, just where it's comfortable

Notice that these are using the default keybindings, and I find myself perfectly comfortable with it. But that being said, note that with where the pinky and thumb are positioned, it is absolutely logical and convenient to use these other two fingers, even if it's INCREDIBLY slightly. Ctrl key is also for smart pings, so if it's easier, there is no harm in gently pressing down your pinky onto the ctrl key for smart pings. Similarly to that, your thumb is rested directly upon the space bar, so just gently tapping your thumb down will also bring the camera back to your character when using the unlocked screen.

Everybody is different. Using more than 3 fingers to play the game doesn't gimp you in any way, the only thing that would gimp you is forcing yourself to use less fingers than you're used to because it makes you uncomfortable, which in turn makes your own gameplay suffer. This is the same sort of thing as with locked/unlocked screens. It's a personal preference, and there are some pros who even use locked screen more often than unlocked screen.

In the end, play the way that you play best, not the way that 'pros' do. If playing like a pro was as simple as having the exact same keybindings and finger usage as one, there would be a shit ton more diamond players in this game.

I never really noticed that Pros didn't use the pinky, i just assumed they liked to smash the key really hard with it lol.

I use all 4 +thumb because i use Tab, Shift, A, S, Q, W, E, R, G, V, B, 1, 2, 3, 4 and space bar all with my left hand. Don't know why i'd wanna use less fingers to do that lol Also i have the self cast for E and W linked to 2 different buttons on my mouse.

Well remember that things not every pro plays the same, I don't know about hand position, but Doublelift locks his camera in teamfights

Biggest tip I can give you to get better (as an overall player) is to CS better. I know EVERYONE says this, and it's extremely vague, but let me go a little more in depth on this for you so you understand it better and so the advice ACTUALLY helps you out.

10 CS at 10 minutes is horrible, everyone knows (or should know) this. Getting better at CS involves increasing the number of CS you get over time; however, what you're not told, is that getting better at CS does NOT mean getting every CS. The complicated dance that is laning involves more than just CS'ing, it involves harassing, dealing with incoming harass, zoning, being zoned, ganks etc. What does this all have to do with getting better at CS? Good question.

Getting better at CS isn't JUST nailing every single minion that walks into lane. This is, of course, a great goal to shoot for, but truly getting better at CS'ing also involves knowing which minions you SHOULD NOT try to CS.

As an example, if you're laning against akali, and she hits you with her Q and drops her shroud on the minion wave, it's probably better that you let those two juicy minions die on their own. Otherwise, you'll likely get the two minions, but you'll take 2 Q's and 2 Q'd auto's worth of damage from Akali to get them, which is NOT worth.

If however, you're against a Garen, and he's in a bush, you should ignore the Garen and CS away, moving to kiting the Garen the instant he comes out of the bush. Please note that, if the Garen sits in the bush for extended periods of time, you should probably throw a skillshot/AoE thing/ward it and auto him so his Passive doesn't keep his HP topped off.

After you get good at actually landing last hits, work on getting more last hits, then work on figuring out which last hits you SHOULDN'T get, then work on harassing the enemy between last hits... continue adding new things on constantly and you'll get better.

Sorry I couldn't give any advice for the mechanics adjustment you're subjecting yourself to, I'm playing on my current "fits me" setup of q,w,e,r being on a,s,d,f, and my summoners on e,r, and I've been playing like that since back in Season 2ish.

Best of luck <3

Ty, Ty, just what i was looking for (what keys go to what finger).

i've seen ALL types of streamers & guides.I was B5 and climbed steady to S5, but wanted to "improve more" and moved to the 3 fingers style. Thats when i hit the wall.

  • i have done the cs@10 min challenge, i can SEE the bronze mistakes my rivals are making, I bully my laner, & buy pinks even as adc. But i noticed something; the only way to "carry my teams" is trough team fights. Idk why but ONLY after a good team fight that's when they finally decide to take objectives.
  • I still follow my philosophy and im able to bully my rival. But the problem is during team fights where fast thinking and reactions are needed, thats when my fingers dont follow all my commands. (press flash instead of ignite, pop random ward istead of skill, e.t.c. e.t.c)

*Thats why i came here, where hopefully more experienced players can give me advise and tips. Again Ty.

you keep pinky on TAB in case if you want to check the score to see who's from your team needs to be yelled at
