Don't play a lot of champs. warding is key. don't feed, late game objectives are more important than kills so dont chase.

Learn to spot right away when someone if giving you crap for playing bad. It is good sometimes but only if the teammate is giving you advice and kindly telling you what your doing wrong, not all chat "GG," and other things. If your going to use Ranked as a way to learn your going to hear quite a bit of negative remarks. If they start to annoy you, use the mute button, don't bother playing the typing war. Just as long as you are giving the game your all and your having fun that's what matters.

I would recommend finding that champ you really like, play to learn that champ and that role, that should be #1 thing on your mind not focusing too much on the win / lose and whenever you have free time, head over to Twitch.tv or Youtube and start watching the pros. Ask yourself why it is they are doing whatever it is with a certain champ or role.

Here's some tips:

  1. Click the lantern. 1.5. Seriously, click the lantern.
  2. Buy a ward. Even if you're the adc.
  3. Learn your matchups. Don't play difficult champions/builds because you saw some pro do it on a stream unless you're confident enough. Don't pick Fiora
  4. If you're first pick, don't pick something that's incredibly counter-able. If I had a dollar for everytime someone autolocked Katarina only for the next enemy pick to be Kassadin, I'd be Diamond 1 because I wouldn't need college or a career anymore.
  5. Click the f***ing lantern.
  6. Balance fun and winning. AP Leona can wreck in the occasional normal game, or botlane carry Fiora, but people in ranked know what they're doing and will Shut. You. Down.
  7. Learn how to position (I could spend an entire post on this alone, but just look up some general tips on it).
  8. If the tank initiates after telling you it's time to attack, don't run away.
  9. If Lulu uses her ultimate on you, or Kayle or Zilian or any champion that has a way to keep you from dying or clutch plays, don't just run away. Like, if it's clearly intended as an escape, fine. But don't waste that shit. More on 10.
  10. In certain situations, utility trumps raw damage. Abuse that shit. There's a reason we have supports and not two junglers in the current meta.
  11. Learn how to play support. You WILL be last pick from time to time.
  12. Seriously, learn how to support. Supports are useful, and can be playmakers. Learn how to play AS them so you can play WITH them.
  13. CLICK THE LANTERN.
  14. Learn how to adc and kite.
  15. Learn how to jungle.
  16. Learn to top.
  17. Learn to m—just kidding, half the region wants that lane.
  18. I was joking. Learn to mid too.
  19. Once you have a basic understanding of how each role works, learn how they synergize with each other (an adc with the mid laner can deal a lot of damage, but will die easy and lead to a double kill if you're not careful. Learn this stuff).
  20. Find a couple roles you're good at (not one, because you won't always get it) and get good at it. REAL good.
  21. Pushing mid is not the key to victory.
  22. Taking mid tower too fast can actually make the enemy laner roam early and score kills at bot lane.
  23. Taking top and bot tower removes map pressure and power from the enemy, whereas mid lane is short enough that they can get there in five seconds with homeguard anyway.
  24. Buy boots.
  25. People in ranked are there to WIN. If you want them to listen to you, show them what you're made of. People are more willing to listen to the jungler who ganked top lane, purposely let their laner score first blood when they could have easily taken it, and never wastes time afk farming. Nobody is going to listen to the adc who has 10 cs twenty minutes in.
  26. Do not play the blame game. Own up to your mistakes, don't harp on other's. Don't put your teammates on tilt.
  27. The support supports the TEAM, not just the adc. Nobody expects the top-laner to get a Lulu ult fifteen minutes in. Abuse this.
  28. Click the lantern.
  29. Watch your enemy laner's positioning and habits. When your jungler is nearby, and they shift position coincidentally so they couldn't easily be ganked, they have a ward up. If your jungler isn't nearby, and they're shifting position for no reason, that means you're probably about to get ganked.
  30. Use wards, and pay attention if your enemies are warding. It's much easier to call for a gank if you know they aren't warding. 30.5. As a bonus tip, I jungle quite a bit. My favorite trick is to hit tab, see who's not warding, and go to the one place they wouldn't ward (for top-lane, that's typically their own tribush, since they'd typically ward in the river and nowhere else). There are other junglers who do this. You should be afraid. Junglers like me get first blood, not spend the first ten minutes afk farming.
  31. Know your champions scaling power, or what part of the game they're strongest. If you have a Shaco, Vi, Lee Sin, etc, don't wait until level 6 to gank. You should be ganking after your first recall, if not before.
  32. Never ever, ever, ever rely on your level 6 ultimate power spike. Because typically your enemy, gasps, gets the same power spike. Make trades beforehand, get them to half health or something. You're not going to kill a full-health Graves if you haven't poked him down as Caitlyn.
  33. Speaking of poking, do not underestimate early game autoattacks, especially when you midlane. They deal decent poke damage early game without wasting mana. God forbid you learn how to add autoattacks to your combos, figure out that sheen and lichbane can make you even stronger, learn how to synergize your kit with your build, and end up nuking people as Lux support with autoattacks.
  34. For bot lane, know about lane matchups (not just champions). You got your poke, your sustain, and your kill lanes depending the support AND adc. If you're against a Graves and a Blitzcrank, do NOT get grabbed. If you're against Vayne and Thresh, there is no escape if you get hooked.
  35. Building damage is not the only answer. Even the adc can benefit from items like guardian angel. If you build glass cannon, you kill and die easy. If two glass cannons meet, the more fed one typically wins (with some exceptions). Speaking of which...
  36. Learn to counterbuild and build offensively as well as defensively. Want to clear jungle but you don't have good damage because you're tanky? Sunfire's cape, baby. Enemy team keeps running away with BS movement speed? Randuins, baby. Enemy keeps escaping inside your own jungle and disappearing? Let me introduce you to my little friend... Twin Shadows.
  37. Click the lantern.
  38. Don't force teamfights when you're behind. There's multiple tactics. Split-pushing is a viable tactic if your team is defending at a turret. One teammate less at turret, but one less of their's. If they send a damage carry away to take care of the jungler, things may shift in your favor.
  39. Learn map awareness. Nothing pisses me more off as jungler when I ping a gank, and the laner pushes the lane to enemy turret!
  40. Learn how to freeze lanes. As adc, you need to LAST hit to get the gold. Doesn't matter how many times you hit it beforehand, it's the same gold. The lane is pushed based on which side autoattacks more, so learn how to manage your lane. Don't push too early, otherwise the jungler can trap you under their tower. Only push to force the enemy to lose cs or to take their tower, or whenever it gives you a tactical edge.
  41. Your KDA does not win games. Destroying the nexus does. I don't care if you went 42/0/69 as Riven, it's still your fault (along with everyone else's) if you lose the game. If you lost when you were that fed, that means other lanes were struggling. Why didn't you help them out? Teamwork is key to winning this game, and it is NOT the jungler's job to win your lane. Work together and achieve more (I learned a lot of this from Sky Williams, so check out his youtube videos. He does the real talk).
  42. And for the love of god, never tell someone to stop feeding. Be constructive with your criticism, offer help, and do something that benefits them as well as you. Seriously, how does "stop feeding" help anyone? What does it mean to stop feeding? Don't engage the enemy ever? Don't help out in teamfights to avoid the risk of dying? You need to be specific and POLITE.

And that's some general advice, from me.

Another thread mentioned this site, which I feel is worth repeating: http://lolecho.com/?na:1733897352

Some bad news: if you're just hitting 30, you will probably wind up in low Bronze. The initial placement matches tend to be around Silver IV, so you will lose more than you win until you reach your skill level. It's not a bad thing, just a reality you need to prepare for.

If you want to improve, here are some good specific starting points:

  1. Finish at least a couple Rune pages with logical Tier 3 runes. Any guide or a site like probuilds.net can help you out
  2. You need to last hit better, even if that means picking a champ better suited to it, like Zerath or Ziggs.

Just 1 & 2 together means, by 10 minutes in, you're some 1200g behind your lane opponent. It's very hard to come back from that.

As others said, wards will save your life. You get a free ward trinket, but you don't use even that.

Do not play champs with a high skill floor. Those are champs that need to be good mechanically or positioning, etc. to even do anything. Fiddlesticks is good example. He can get pentakills easily (I believe only behind Katarina) but is extremely dependent on positoning and hitting an ult/E/Q/W combo then Zhonya's at the exact moment that you would die to a skillshot, refresh Q, then Q/W again.

Instead play champs with low skill floor, high skill cap. I climbed to Gold 1 last season with Master Yi, Annie and Nocturne. This season I'm still climbing with Master Yi.

Settle on a few favorite champions and or role at first.

You can outscale most silver players by just farming really well. No need to make kills.

Realize lane mechanics. If you push a little harder you have a minion and exp advantage. Minions help you fight. You can cheese kills with level advantages if they don't respect you and your creeps. If you push way too fast though you'll be near his tower and give him free farm. Reset lane by pushing into tower before more minions get there. Ward when you push up. Realize a minion wave bigger than theirs pushes on its own. You want to get the minions into their tower before recalling to minimize losing farm if they freeze or manage to push into your tower. Learn to buy quickly so you can get back to lane ASAP.

There are times to last hit/freeze too. Usually if you outrange your opponent. Or are so much stronger with a gold lead you can totally keep them away from farm.

After you win lane and take their tower keep your lane pushed then help a neighboring lane. Or buy wards and keep splitpushing up your lane (this is harder IMO)

Hi. There are a few things to know.

  1. Map- Includes warding, who is pushing up, who does the enemy want to kill/ bait, where could they be baiting you (they can only bait you if they have vision), who is not on the map, who is on the map, and have any of these champions hit power spikes/ are they ahead?
  2. Clock- SUPER important. Know the buff timers, where the jungler is starting, when they will be back at the buff (set up wards?), dragon/ baron timer (in case you don't have vision when you know they take it, especially these days), timing summoners, timing skills, abusing people for having no summoners/ skills/ mana/ lower health.

I think that is basically a super condensed guide. The rest of it comes from practice and knowing how you can interact with your allies in game.

I suggest:

  • Figure out one main role. What you're best at and enjoy playing the most.
  • Get at least two sub roles that you can do reasonably well.
  • Play a lot of normals (and bot games(1)) to get champs down.

(1) K, hear me out, this is a really great way to learn the mechanics of whatever champ you're trying to learn: The interaction of Syndra's balls with her skills, Kat's combo's and resets, Cho'gath's Q timing, Soraka's range, ect.

Honestly, getting ~5 champs you can play comfortably (a couple for each role) is the way to go.

Ranked games without friends is tough. I'm a pretty good player, but I am bronze, I feel, because of pug groups who can be so vile, distracting, selfish and make stupid moves.

Best option would be to find someone to play Ranked with.

  1. Go to Gameplay & Balance and find out who everyone is complaining about.
  2. Play team builder with that champion until you've learned them.
  3. Proceed to ranked for freelo.

Thanks guys for all the advice! I do Ward alot, not very bad with most champs but still get rekt by pros even when they are behind. At this point even the normal matchmaking is hard as hell. I got a bad losing streak now and i only win when a enemy Afk :(

The Chin2/17/2015, 10:06:58 AM1 votes

well even though it's ranked it's still the same game :p

Only difference is everyone's playing their best champs and trying harder
