Questions About Co-op vs. AI Ethics/Roles

Hey. I'm new to the game (only lvl 8) and I just bought my first champ, Morgana. Been playing exclusively Beginner Co-op vs. AI and had a few questions regarding roles in Co-op vs. AI. I got chewed out the other day for kill-stealing and not sticking to my lane, etc. I know I need to ignore rude people, but I'm also trying to learn how to play properly with a team. Maybe these people were right about how I was playing wrong.

Questions:

  1. I understand that in higher lvl games, especially against real people (not AI), that roles are more defined (support, AD Carry, AP Carry, Jungler, Tank/Bruiser). But I was under the impression that Co-op vs. AI is more of a free for all where people SOMEWHAT play within the roles. Co-op vs AI is all about learning a new character. Is this correct?

  2. For instance, if someone picks mid first and I still want to learn my new character (i.e. Morgana), can I just play somewhere else and still try to get kills/money? Or would that be kill-stealing?

  3. If I end up playing bot as Morgana with an AD Carry, do I have to support against AI or can I just kill/ping when I get the chance? I wasn't wanting to practice as support. I don't feel like a support is really needed vs. AI.

  4. When is it ok to help out another lane/gank? I'm not great at ganking, but I'm trying to learn. I went to help out mid to push a little more, and got angry comments to "get the **** out of their lane". This was about 10 minutes into the game.

Some help about gaming ethics would be greatly appreciated. I want to know when to let rude comments roll off my back and when to try to learn from my mistakes. Thanks.

A : Some people are addicted to how Riot wants players to play the game. If you had planned to play VS real players , practicing your role isn't bad. If you just wanted to play Bots to have fun for this game, go wild and play any lane you want.

2. For instance, if someone picks mid first and I still want to learn my new character (i.e. Morgana), can I just play somewhere else and still try to get kills/money? Or would that be kill-stealing?

A: If you are duo laning I recommend Spellthief Edge item 3303 , and gaining money through that. Honestly Kill stealing isn't as important as gaining momentum in a lane. You can always try to solo Morgana top as well(if you can handle 2v1)

3. If I end up playing bot as Morgana with an AD Carry, do I have to support against AI or can I just kill/ping when I get the chance? I wasn't wanting to practice as support. I don't feel like a support is really needed vs. AI.

A: You are correct that bot games do not need a realistic support. But my thoughts refer back to did you have any plans playing VS real players. The idea of Support is being able to help with the most minimal money possible. Otherwise go wild and kill, and if people complain say you are just helping.

4. When is it ok to help out another lane/gank? I'm not great at ganking, but I'm trying to learn. I went to help out mid to push a little more, and got angry comments to "get the **** out of their lane". This was about 10 minutes into the game.

A: You gank( from a duo lane perspective) when you feel your solo laner is strong enough to hold on their own. At the level you are playing at, I'd rather much focus on my own lane. Improve from there and then you can bother with ganks later. If you have destroyed your lane's tower then feel free to roam and assist other lanes. Morgana's Q [Bind] is very strong and will usally net a kill , if your allies aren't slow on the reactions. For the people who go mad , just mute, don't bother talking to them because these are the types of people who get mad at everything.

people play AI to get their first win of the day, blow off some steam, practice a champ's mechanics. It is best to pick a lane and stick with it, unless another player asks for help. If you come in and start killing their lane opponent, they're likely to get mad at you because they're probably trying to practice how to deal with harass and baiting. Or perhaps they are trying to blow off steam and just want some easy kills in AI.

The best rule in AI is to stick to your lane unless invited into another lane. We all know that a lot of people have very little trouble with AI - but showing off by invading another lane and killing the bots isn't winning you any friends.

You will find that different people have different opinions. People who exclusively play Co-op are likely to have a more rigid code as they feel that the mode is a "real" game, while people who play PvP almost exclusively are more likely to see Co-op as a do-absolutely-whatever practice session.

I'm pretty firmly in the latter camp. I probably would not go so far as putting a 2nd person in mid or a 3rd person in bot, but aside from that you can disregard basically everything as long as you're not intentionally trying to make your team lose or making it more difficult to win the game.

If someone says "don't gank my lane" or "don't steal my kills", they're talking about their own personal code. You might want to abide by their Co-op rules to be polite, but ultimately it's up to you. Their rules are not the official rules nor the community-accepted rules. None of the behavior you mentioned is reportable. These players entered a queue where they are matched with strangers; it is unreasonable for them to dictate how those people must play.

At lower levels people complain about kill stealing a lot more than they should. Just ignore them, even mute them if you have to

As for staying in your lane, it's actually good to practice going to other lanes and helping them out when you can, it's just that bots games are so easy people will get mad at you for helping.

Thanks guys! Helps me feel better about just playing how I want within certain bounds. I will try to limit my ganking unless I can see someone needs help. Just to be clear, is it ok to kill-steal creeps and champion AI's in bot lane if you're not the AD? I think you are all saying it's fine in Co-op vs AI.
