Anivia advice?

Hey there, Master Fledgling here.

So I bought Anivia today after deciding that Bard, while I love him dearly, needs some buffs before I purchase him. In the mean time, Anivia.

Glad you're still with me. I am a support main and often carry with GP from said role and I found that Anivia is sort of like the AP version of GP -- excluding actual AP GP anyways.

However, I can already tell that she has earned her 10/10 difficulty for a reason -- her speed is abysmal, is mana hungry as hell, has one of the strangest Q's ever AND is relatively short range, which is odd for a mage. It almost implies that you are supposed to build her tanky, but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Anyways, please let me know how to utilize this bird properly and become the Master this Fledgling (Nailed it!!)

Articuno and stuff,

-MF

PS -- I intend to play her mostly as a support, if that was not clear.

make sure to combo her e with her q. Q and R apply a buff/debuff that when you hit them with your E, doubles the damage of the E.

Anivia does not really make a good support. She's just a good pick mid for when you have a very strong front line and teamfight type comp. Anivia does not do well without gold since you need to get mana built up ASAP to even be useful, first item you always buy in any match is the tear, then most people build RoA before finishing seraphs, but you do need both to be viable. Early game with anivia is trying to scrape as much CS as you can with her half-assed autos and she really shines late game Start Q and max E first, in early lane you have to catch the enemy with a Q to land your E, if the Q doesn't land using E isn't even worth the mana. Safe to say you generally want to avoid fights early, but anivia's ability to lane safely is pretty strong since the enemy knows going in hard will result in a stun and a trade not in their favor. She's also a good pick against the one hit wonder mid laners like zed, syndra, and veigar who excel at nuking someone then leaving. As a support she might have some decent function with ADCs that have good poke like corki or caitlyn, but inevitably you aren't going to have the mana you need to survive mid game, and without her Q anivia is extremely vulnerable, any decent enemy bot lane will quickly catch on to the CD length and use it against you.

If you are gonna play her as support, there's a few things you can do. First, abuse her auto attacks... although slow, the range is very good; higher than most champions in the game. Next you'll have to learn how to hit Q, and always follow it up with E. If you want to do more advanced tactics, block the enemy path with her wall (W) and aim your Q in the direction they're forced to move so it will hit. Another trick is to cast E and then put R (just for a second) under the enemy before the E hits. You have to be quick or you'll lose your double damage.

Lastly, Anivia's Q is weird; it can do damage twice. Once as it passes through the enemy, and once as it explodes (when you detonate it or it reaches the end). If you are harassing in lane, try to get both of the damage on the enemy by letting it pass through and then detonating it slightly behind them. It can be pretty tough to do because it moves so slow, but the ADC movements are pretty predictable since they will be last hitting minions.

As for build... I don't know, you will have a hard time no matter what. Her mana costs are stupid even if you have blue buff. You can try to build a tear or chalice and be careful with using your spells. And yes, building tanky/healthy is key because it makes your passive egg more likely to survive - it's great bait. (Also yes, short range mage needs some health...)

No offense, but after you said you carry with gangplank from the support role, I had to look you up. I don't really expect support anivia to work outside of maybe silver, mostly due to the problems you mention: insane mana costs, no mobility (you might be able to consider the wall mobility in the sense that it blocks off opponents, but ehh), and no sustain. Theoretically, she could function sort of like Annie, but with a slower, smaller stun, less defense, and overall performing more poorly.

I really wanted to try to make an Anivia Vayne lane work, because well placed walls could result in double stuns against the poor champ that you isolated with the wall. But I think Anivia is too weak in bot lane to even make this a threat.
