How do you make the most impact as a top laner.

Well I failed my silver 4 promos 4 times now and I want to know the best way to impact a game and possibly carry. I play allot of greedy top laners EG Garen/ Renekton/ Nasus. I usually get a lead but I really don't know what to with it, usually I try to get my self even further ahead. I'm unsure if I should help the team more often or stay top and cs and split push ( specially if lanes are losing).

Thanks for reading.

You don't really. If both your other lanes are losing/feeding and your opponent top hasn't left lane at all, it's not your fault and you are not in a good position to go help them out because leaving lane means you lose turret. Frankly you aren't the one who fed, rest easy in that at least.

Keep tp up when theres a drag. If drags not up think "Can I use this tp and have the next one up for drag?" If bot over extends scumbag gank with a ward they have hopefully put in their bush with teleport. If you're already tanky from your lead be the tank and start team fighting earlier. Peel. Etc.

Teleport is your friend, and is the best way to make an impact on the game.

Watch for team fights, especially around Dragon or Baron. Granted this does require that your team wards more than one or two spots, but that should always be happening. As teamfights break out, take a split second to analyze the situation. Ask yourself things like;

Is one or more members of the enemy team out of position? Is anyone low on health and trying to escape in the path of a ward? Is my team in an advantageous position or are they currently fleeing for their lives? (Assuming it's still up, and assuming the game is equal in terms of CS and towers taken) Will the enemy top laner be able to take my tower?

The other means of impacting the game depends on the enemy top laner. If they've got their nose to the ground and are just mindlessly pushing top, that can make it difficult to get out of lane to help the team.

On the other hand, since you like to play Nasus then really you should just be farming the hell out of your Q in lane. Teleport then when you can instantly slow a target and drop your AoE to create an unhealthy zone for the enemy team to fight in.

Can't say much about Renekton, but (as someone who picked him up as their first champ) Garen is a bit of a niche pick for top. He doesn't really bring anything to the team besides being impossible to get out of lane. He's okay to pick if your team already has decent CC going for it, but he gets countered pretty easily by any champ with ranged harass. Champions like Gnar are great because they bring damage and tankiness, but also good CC to peel for teammates or catch enemy champs.

So I'd suggest widening your champ pool a bit and always keeping an eye out for places to make a teleport play.

Be epic at teleport. Turn team fights on the bottom lane. Even shitty players with lots of gear can succeed to some extent. So if you're at least helping other lanes get assists, taking dragons, etc... you're off to a good start. Also, your top laners aren't really the META. Playing the meta is how you win at the LoL! Also, upgrading your ward for improved vision or removing enemy vision is strong. The more you know!

Top Lane: Vlad, Hec, Rumble, Ryze are probably the best choices in no particular order. Irelia can do well also.

There are two types of top laners.

  1. Team fight oriented. These are your malphites, maokai, chogath types. Usually tabky characters with cc. These types of tops are best for one you can get at least one carry fed. If you go this route and your carries are not doing well then you are likely going to lose. That said, tops tend to go tanky so if your team is squishy already you absolutely should go as a tanky top, or at least bruiser.

  2. Top lane carries. Fighters that border on being assassins, these tops usually rely on getting an early kill and snowballing hard. After getting 2 or 3 kills on these types of champions you can pretty much pick a lane, shove it, and take tower. These champions include the likes of Riven, Irelia, and Fiora. Only go this route if your team is already fairly tanky as usually these types of top laners do not have much if any cc and can be focused easily in team fights if the enemy team is smart. Plusbside is by the time they take you out usually you have killed their carry.

Its all about synergy really.

Now with the tops you specified here is what i would do in a typical game to be impactful.

Nasus: never push your lane, never leave lane unless for dragon or team fight and then come right back to lane. Save your wither for the enemy adc or to peel for your own adc depending on what team is engaging. After you get about 500 stacks you should ideally stay top lane and push forever. This will force the enemy team to send multiple people to deal with you since 1 will likely just die. If they dont come for you proceed to take towers and inhibs. If your team dies and you get 2 or more towers out of the split push it was worth it. Only teamfight late game with nasus if the split pushing doesnt work out or you are contesting an objective like your own towers or dragon and baron.

Garen: Garen has a strong early and mid game and you do not need much damage on him to carry those phases of the game. Late game your job is to either splitpush (not ideal) or dive the enemy carry forcing the enemy team to blow most of their abilities on you. This leaves your team open to blow their abilities in return on higher priority targets. Save your flash with garen for engaging late game as you will need it to catch the carry. Against high mobility champions like kalista or vayne do not chase them and target their mid laner instead as you will just get kited. As for his build i recommend getting a brutalizer early and then buying tank items, at some point you also want a black cleaver. Probly as 3rd or rth item.

Play renekton mostly the same you would play garen.

Since there are several, well detailed posts, I'll keep mine short and simple about something that's not been mentioned yet.

What makes a good top laner is being able to simultaneously manage your lane whilst also roaming to have that impact. Ideally, you'd want to roam and then be back into your lane before the enemy laner has the chance to gain a lead or roam himself. By doing this, you maintain your lane, gain leads for your team, and snowball yourself. Now, I want to mention that you do not need to have teleport to do this. As Garen or Renekton, you could easily take ignite and still have an impact. It just involves putting your enemy so far behind that they have to freeze rather than having superior mobility and teleport plays.

If you haven't heard of a YouTube channel called How To Top Lane, I suggest looking it up now. It's helped me a lot! Good luck!
