Rune Pages
This guide will serve as an introduction to Rune Pages, I will cover the basics and how to find out your personal preferences as well as what runes are the most efficient ones to use. Let's get started with the basics: At first you will have 2 Rune Pages available to you. You want to turn those 2 Rune Pages into an AD and an AP Rune page, so you are able to play all Champions. You only want to buy the Tier 3 Runes as they are the ones giving you the biggest advantage and they will always be useful to you over the course of your League of Legends career.
The basic AD Rune Page consists of the following Runes: 9x Attack Damage marks 9x Armor seals 9x Magic Resistance glyphs 3x Attack Damage quintessence
The basic AP Rune Page consists of the following Runes: 9x Magic Penetration marks 9x Armor seals 9x Magic Resistance glyphs 3x Ability Power quintessence
Now that we have that covered we will move onto more advanced Rune choices. The following type of Runes are those that I personally use and would recommend you to use:
Marks:
-Magic Penetration, Armor Penetration and Hybrid Penetration: All of these are really strong as they will increase the power of your late Early game and the complete Mid game as well as the early Late Game. -Attack Speed: Mainly used when playing Junglers and Champions that heavily synergize with attack speed (e.g. Jax, Irelia, Nocturne, Master Yi). They are the best scaling runes an AD Champion can have. -Armor: I haven't used these too often but they proved very useful when I did. Mainly used on Supports who need all the durability they can get (e.g. Leona, Thresh), as they are engaging type of Champions or make up the Front Line. Critical Strike Chance (only use multiples as Yasuo): They are mainly used to provide you with 1% critical strike chance, which can cause you to win a lane in the early game that you otherwise wouldn't have won. They are also used in order for Yasuo to achieve 100% or near 100% Critical Strike Chance.
Seals:
-Armor per level: These surpass the regular armor seals at level 6, I only did not use these for the basic rune pages as level 1-6 is usually the point where the armor is needed the most. Despite that, Armor per level seals are very useful as they increase your durability in the mid game. -Health: Health seals are very good for early all ins, as you can tank more damage over short periods of time. They are weaker in poke lanes. -Health per level: The best scaling defensive seals. They considerably increase your durability later on in the game but have next to no effect in the early stages of a game. I use these the most because I am a rather passive player in the early laning phase, therefore I do not need as much survivability.
Glyphs:
-Magic Resistance per level: You will want to use these instead of Magic Resistance if your laning opponent is an AD based Champion and there is no immediate threat from the opposing AP opponent's Jungler or their Jungler is also AD based. -Ability Power: Same as Magic Resistance per level. You only want to use these if the opposing AD laner as well as their Jungler is no threat to you. -Cooldown reduction and Cooldown reduction per level: These function as gap fillers, so you can reach 40% sooner, or with only few Cooldown reduction items. They scale very well into the Late game.
Quintessences:
-Movement Speed: I suggest you to buy these very early on in your career, right after you finished the basic Rune Pages. They are incredibly powerful and versatile. Long story short: No Champion doesn't benefit from Movement Speed. -Armor Penetration: If you want your Mid game to be as powerful as possible, you use these. I use these very often and they provide a considerable amount to low armored targets in the mid game. Together with Armor penetration marks and a Youmuu's Ghostblade and a Last Whisper, anyone without Armor will take True Damage from your physical damage sources. -Attack Speed: Same as Attack Speed marks. -Armor: Same as Armor Marks.
Although you can play every Champion using the Basic Rune Pages, there are probably more efficient versions that will suit your Champion and Play style better than the basic ones. Over the course of your career you will also want to get more rune pages in order to achieve more versatility.
First edit: What type of runes does my Champion need?
There are a few ways to approach this.
- You can experiment with different runes and eventually find the most efficient ones. This will grant you a lot of experience and knowledge, but it is very IP intensive, so I would not recommend this unless you already have a lot of IP.
- Look up guides for your champion on the internet and use them as inspiration. Most of them explain why they made their respective rune choices to help you understand it.
- Ask players who you think are trust worthy. If you have a friend in High Master Tier or something of the likes, just hit him up to ask a few Questions, I'm sure he'll help you.
