Miscellaneous tips & tricks for new Summoners...

So with me being new I find myself in a lot of situations I have no clue how to play and more often than not am let down when I ask my team mates for tips on dealing with the situation. Typical responses include "hug" or "don't feed" and the classic "disconnect newb" and truth be told I'm tired of it. I figured I'd take a shot @ getting help via the boards and am hoping that we can just get a general tips & tricks thread going for that new summoners like myself will be able to visit when needed.

With that said, do the folks viewing the boards have any tips for dealing with a 2v1 top lane ( an example being Shyvana vs Tryndaemre & Lulu support ) or maybe a few tricks regarding your favorite mage/support character? This is the place to record them for all the world to see. Share your trick to last-hitting that siege minion as an ADC! Together we can build this board into a reference for the newbies who need advice.

All I have to say is be very patient at the start of the game. Kill minions and try not to be hit by the enemy player. Do your greatest and have fun! :D

It's easier to answer specific questions than throw general tips at people, I think. You can have tons of tips for any specific champion or strategy.

As for dealing with 2v1, it's what your teammates said (though bluntly): "hug" your turret and "don't feed". You may have to give up a lot of CS (creep/minion score, btw), but try to stay in exp range and farm under your turret. If you can't farm under turret without dying, go farm your jungle. Wait either until your jungler comes to gank top, or until your turret falls. In the meantime, farm the jungle or go gank mid lane.

The "don't feed" part means don't sit at your turret to 'defend' it if you know you are going to die, or might die because you have low health. Go back to base; give up turret. If returning to turret, bring potions or buy a flask.

When your turret is down, one or both enemies will either start roaming, or keep pushing. You will have more time to CS because they have to walk longer to your turret. Try to freeze it at your second turret. Wait for ganks.

My tips: Going one for one is rarely ever worth it. Unless you are killing someone who has amassed a killstreak and therefore a large bounty on their head, or getting first blood, then it is rarely ever worth killing someone just to get a kill. Destroying a tower and dying is also generally not worth it as you can always keep the lane pushing later (this is called lane pressure, aka threatening to destroy an enemy tower by sending minions to it) and take it when the enemy isn't there to defend. Inhibitors and the nexus are different stories and are very big objectives to take most of the time.

Understand when you should and shouldn't chase. There's a difference between chasing enemies and getting baited and lured into a trap.

Last hitting minions and farming is the most reliable and usually safest method of acquiring gold and getting to lategame. Early game, don't try to depend on killing the enemy laner or damaging/destroying their tower. In the lategame, kills come by fast and towers explode quickly. Usually during midgame and lategame, people tend to abandon the minions in the side lane. These tend to build up into large "super waves" composed of multiple minion waves and are worth tons of gold and exp.

Wards are useful for map control. Map control means areas of the map where your team has vision of and therefore are locations that you can tell are safe or unsafe. They are also important for spotting jungle objectives such as Baron, Dragon, Red buff or blue buff. Try to ward an objective camp (if it is alive) as having knowledge of who took it is valuable information (or who is taking it at the time). Wards are also useful if an enemy runs into brush that you do not have vision of as they prevent brush juking. A well placed ward can also allow you to catch enemy setups and traps.

BE PATIENT, you don't have to be autoattacking something at all times, you don't have to be on the move at all times. Sometimes the best choice is simply to do nothing for a while and wait for opportunities to open up. This is very important in ganks.

Learn how to jungle. It does not matter what role you intend to main or play, knowing the jungle, the camps, how a jungler ganks, what junglers do, how to work with your jungler and why a jungler exists will help you out. Every role is affected by the jungler and every role benefits from knowledge of the jungle and what's important inside of it. The meta is shaped around the jungle.

Finally, understand gold checkpoints. This is something NO ONE EVER TALKS ABOUT. But what I mean by this is "how much gold do I need to finish my item 3031 infinity Edge if, say I had a item 1038 BF sword and a item 1037 Pickaxe?". The answer is 1375 gold. THIS MEANS once you see that you have 1375 gold, you should recall back to shop and finish that item as it is a huge powerspike. Knowing the prices of items and how much gold you need can be the difference between actually doing damage and tanking during a teamfight or contributing nothing to the team.

My tricks: There is a button to the left of the 1 key. It looks like "`" (or ~ if you press shift). In game this key is the "target champions only button. Use it to make abilities and autoattacks target champions only. Useful for attacking opponents in the presence of minions. You can also use it in the jungle to reposition yourself without stopping to auto attack the jungle camp, which is very useful for champions like Zac (picking up blobs) and Olaf (so you can put the jungle monster between you and the wall to throw axes that you immediately catch).

You can place wards over walls. If you think the enemy is taking baron or dragon, stand on the opposite side of the wall and put a ward into the pit. It's usually safe to do (since your opponent would have to jump over the wall to get you) and you get vision of the objective.

Right click items in the shop. This will immediately purchase the item. You don't have to double left click and maybe buy too many potions nor do you have to select and then click purchase.

Use a champion with alot of sustain (heals life steal or regen) some good choices for a low level that dont cost much ip are...

Garen (high hp regen with his passive) Master yi (self heal) Warwick (life steal) Nasus (life steal) Dr mundo (hp regen) Chogath (hp regen when u kill a minion)

In addition to starting with these champs in a 2v1 lane i recommend starting with so,e of the following item combinations.

  1. Cloth armor and 5 hp potions if enemy top laners are attack damage based. (Not magic)

  2. Boots and hp pots. Best for facing champions who rely on skill shots to hit you.

  3. Doran shield and hp pot. Better for regen champs like garen and chogath.

Tip for laning: Trading

One error I see a lot of people make is not knowing when to trade with an enemy laner, especially in the bot lane. A good rule to keep in mind is what's happened so far. You may be unfamiliar with the exact damage out put of you and the other laner but keep in mind if you just lost a trade, under the same circumstances you will probably lose the next one. You would be surprised how many times I see my bot lane die, and then come back and initiate under the enemy tower. If you didn't win the first one, what makes you think you can take them after they just spent 600 gold on items and have a turret.

Good news is that this doesn't mean you can never fight them ever, just that if you are behind you have to decline some opportunities to fight in favor of picking the right time. No one's perfect, your opponents are bound to slip up somewhere where you can punish them for it. If you die top, chances are the enemy laner might start overextending just because he knows you aren't going to be able to win a fight and try to harass more, with proper coordination with your jungler you can turn the tables on them.

if you die to someone once, chances are you won't kill that same person in another 1v1 so stop trying.

See if you can find someone willing to play with you that can offer advice. If it wasn't for that guy, I probably would have given up last year.

If it is ever a 2 vs 1 in top lane take Mordekaiser.

  • all his normal abilities are aoe meaning you can hit both of the enemies and creeps with one cast

  • Morde has a low-cooldown ranged harass ability with his E that can be used to take any cs out of a normal melee's range

  • with Morde's huge ability to push the enemy laners are usually forced to miss a lot of cs since while you have already killed their wave, the only way to get yours is to go through Morde

  • his passive offers quite a bit of sustain early as long as you don 't spam too much and once spellvamp is acquired you almost never have to leave lane again

  • if the enemy has 2 top laners that probably means they have no jungler so tell your jungle to be a feral farmer since if the enemy won't be jungling then your yours can farm in peace and allow more buffs to be taken for flare stacks

  • at level 6 Morde can turn that 2 vs 1 from in the enemies favor to his own by making one of them his personal ghost biatch

  • 2 top laners means Morde can push freely with barely any worry of being ganked and when Morde starts pushing barely anything stops him

i actually made a video where i was 1v2 against a malph and aatrox mostly never leave turret range and wait till jungler comes or they do something stupid

it is much easier to come back from a cs deficit than a kill deficit

Plz ignore the fact I sound like shit

Best piece of advice I can think of for new players (we all did it) summoner 11 does not affect champions, don't take it unless you want to kill big monsters.

some guys started these videos a while back and they teach you a bit more about the game in general. I'd highly recommend them after you get the basics down.
