How do I get better at my champion.

Hello everybody! Since this is my first post, I really have no idea as to where to put this discussion or how to format it, but I will do it in the way that I think is the most appropriate. So I started league 3 months ago. However, after playing for a few weeks, I quit because it was affecting my grades a little too much and I needed to get them back up. Starting a month ago, I picked up league again since its nearing the end of the school year and my grades are solid A's and I have time to waste now :). My main champion is Irelia, and if I may say so, I play her pretty well. However, many of my results have not been so good due to the fact that my team feeds the carry (draven hurts lol) or I just get straight camped. Since this keeps happenning, I think there is the chance that it may be because I am lacking in skill at this game. I would like some advice on how to play irelia (or any champion in general) better. I am going to include details about my playstyle below.

So I am a relatively cautious player, I understand that Irelia is not that strong early game and is pretty mana thirsty. Furthermore, I understand how to build her according to the enemy team and not just rush sheen every game like Dyrus and feed. I also know her combos and her power spikes very well, and I try to help out my team. I am decent and getting CS (bladesurge is a breeze) but I still miss one or two creeps every wave, which really adds up. To any of you veteran players who understand this wonderful champion out there, could you please give me tips or just general advice on when to do what, and just what separates a good irelia player, from a truly great one.

Thanks, InJailOutSoon

Honestly, just play them over and over and over.

Also, ask higher-rated friends for advice, or search on youtube for things like 'champion x high ELO game' or 'champion x tutorial'. There's a pretty well-known Challenger player called IreliaCarriesU, who would be worth looking up since you want to get better at Irelia. You'll find many clips of his gameplay on youtube, and I think he streams on Twitch, or at least he used to.

Stuff like that will help you discover things you might not have known about that champion, but you need repetition to truly get a feel for a character.

Try experimenting with build orders, runes, masteries, and other things as well. Play a few games between each change to get a feel for how it's effecting your game. You'll want to stay flexable of course, but even the most flexable player does so within a set space.

I used to play Irelia a lot when I first got her, but I never really got very good with her.

My general tips would be to really hone on map awareness. Ward any time you can, and after you reach level 9, and have 250 gold and don't have anything else to buy on that back, upgrade your trinket. It helps way too much. It depends on the enemy, of course. Pink upgrade against people that can stealth, yellow against everyone else.

From what I know, Irelia should never have problems CS'ing unless they have no mana at all, or are getting totally punished in lane whenever they try. If you feel like you can't get one with an auto, just use Q. I found it easier to save Q and mana just to get CS that you otherwise wouldn't get with an auto, at least early game.

I don't know if what I said really helps you, but I hope it gives a little insight if you hadn't thought about these before.

I'm also just a Bronze 2, so I don't think I know all that much. xD

I'll throw my 2 cents.

As mentioned above, playing your champion a lot and looking up guides, videos, streams is always a good way to learn your champion.

I have a few specific tips since you're playing Irelia. Irelia is usually played as a bruiser/fighter type. Like any champion role, you need to spend your gold correctly to be successful.

Which leads me to another thing that seems to trip up new players: The item shop. There are a lot of items, but not all items are created equal. There are items that are just flat out better for bruisers than any other items.

For damage, item 3078 and item 3153 are your bread and butter. As long as you have these 2 items Irelia is capable of killing anyone. Attack speed is your best stat since your W (Hiten Style) does true damage on hit.

Defensive stats are very important as well. Remember you're melee so once you dive in, you'll start taking damage immediately. Dead champions don't do any damage! To help you stay alive, item 3143 is one of the very best items in the game. High health and armor, and just for good measure a really solid active ability. item 3102 Is another great choice because it gives you health and magic resist, and the spell shield is great for blocking stuns or snares. (notice the trend that items that give Health plus another defensive stat are super powerful.)

The other thing if you really want to get good is your mindset. And this is the single hardest thing to get down.

Have fun, be friendly, and always be asking yourself "what could I have done better?". It could be winning your lane, it could be communicating with your teammates, farming, teleporting into a dragon fight, etc. Your goal should always be to just play a little better than you did last game. Make one fewer mistake, that's how you REALLY get good.

At the end of the day, it's a video game. We're all competitive and want to be the best we can be, but if you start getting frustrated, or angry, just chill for a bit, go do something else, watch some youtube videos, go for a walk or to the gym. People tend to play worse when they're angry, so avoid doing that.

Good irelia gets solo kills in lane. If you can't get solo kills in lane you use your TP and get kills with roams. You are really strong early-mid game after your sheen and level 6. If you aren't getting kills with that spike then you won't be strong enough to carry the game, you'll just be 'useful.'

You get better at your champion by copying pros, then you slowly develop your own style of play.

Think of when you started to learn how to write, you would trace prewritten letters and soon after you developed your own style of handwriting. Learning champions is the same concept.
