Gold drop math
So, I just had a game where i got ALL gold drops (5 of them) from the first 3 mobs. I did well, finished second with a strong team. Only lost cuz he had a demon comp with Force of Nature at level 9. Dude econned great.
But, it got me thinking. What did that early gold get me. I believe I got 8 gold out of it. For easy math, let's do 10.
10 gold early on means guaranteed +1 gold from every round IF you econ it.
5 gold at end of Krugs 10 gold at end of Wolves 15 gold at end of Wraiths
Beyond that, it's time to GO. I'd say you are sp-sp-spending at that point to try and win. If not earlier.
Now what other value does this +10 original gold have. Leveling early is the other way to go. Allowing you to win streak and obtain stronger units ahead of your opponents. The +10 original gold could allow you to level with 8 gold and launch yourself forward while still keeping good econ (start at 38 gold for instance).
Let's say you nail this timing. And the early level up continues a +2 win streak, AND you get your stong units early to really barrel on through a win streak.
+10 gold at end of wolves +2, +2, +3, +3 = 10 gold from an extended win streak (beyond this is asking a lot as others will spend money be at your level anyway)
That's 20 gold. Which..... is a healthy chunk of re-rolls to work down through and finish your comp.
The problem is.... 10 gold (or 8 in my case) is INSANELY rare. And what is the value of the extra 20 gold in a PERFECT situation vs let's call it 2 item components (one big item). I'd still take the item cuz the item can make you winstreak.
If they are dead set on leaving gold in the game, you have to make it a big number. I think each gold drop being 8 starts to get fair. 8 means you can hard early level for free at some point in the game. Which, to me, is equal to one component.
Now, if you get "lucky" to get 3-4 item drops.... is getting 24 gold too much? It's a lot early that's for sure, but now you have no items. Zippo. I still think that's in the ball park of even.
