I think its more inline with pirates to steal gold AND its actually a interesting mechanic to actually add depth. Maybe make it steal 1-2 gold for "2 pirates" and 2-5 gold for 4 pirates. And if they have no gold, then you get a random item from them......
I used pirates once, got 1 extra gold total for 3 rounds of combat. Decided pirates suck and sold them. I would definitely like to see a stealing mechanic for them.
Pirates are only good for that gold lead they give, when using them the goal is to have a bench to make a fluint transition into however post early/mid game they are pretty useless.
