My previous game was going well except I didn't get a single random item drop until the third stage.
Three minion rounds, and two other rounds, before I get any items that weren't from shared draft.
Yeah a fair number of games are decided by someone with double or triple the item count as everyone else. You don't even need any synergy at that point - just throw some items on whoever and you win.
The people saying "Git gud!" or that items don't matter clearly haven't played much of the game (or have been playing against people who waste their items on something like a shiv varus)

Then just stop playing. The game mode is terrible but everyone keeps giving Riot money for bad game designs.

While that's very lucky, getting two tier 2's before the first carousel has little to do with the items he got. That's just a lottery winning coincidence.
Riot could (and should) normalize item frequency/power but getting 2 star champions early on really has nothing to do with it.
I once got one single item drop from the first creep waves. I was actually lucky though. It was the Giant's Belt I needed to turn my starting NLR Pyke into Morello Pyke. Even Morello Pyke couldn't carry me when everyone grabbed up so many copies of all the good units that I couldn't get a single tier 3 anything though.

Serioslly thought if you'd like to keep the rng items at least ffs normalize item POWER. Chain mails is damn near useless i've had 3 sitting on my bench at one point. Also lost a game by accidentally combining a fucking Locket instead of a Ionic Spark. My tank had Morello Locket and a Negatron on him the entire game untill i lost .... in what ~4 and ~4 creep waves i didn't see another Needlessly Large Rod - improve the damn UI pls...

The first 3 rounds USUALLY drop 3 items. If you sell your starter units you end up with four.
I normally get 2 items from the initial rounds myself, but sometimes there are three.
