I'm about to jump into the genre, but I know nothing about it (yet). Which should I play first? What's different between the two? Which is easier to pick up as a newbie? Is TFT well-rounded and final, or is it still working itself out with balance and other issues that plague games early?

Don't listen to these morons who say TFT is garbage. TFT is in beta AS ANNOUNCED MULTIPLE TIMES BY RIOT it's unpolished, meaning that you will find some bugs and numerous points can be improved. If you want a more polished version go Dota , if you want to be with TFT from the beginning then learn the game now as it's new. I find it very relaxing and it's a breathe of fresh air from the disease called Solo queue
