Help Me Find a New Game

I have been playing TFT, and I don't think I will completely quit it, but I also don't think it works well for me as a main game because a bunch of the games I play seem like wasted effort because of the RNG. It's difficult to go anything interesting. Rarely am I able to, and once I play an interesting game, I don't really feel like playing anymore.

So I am starting a search for a new game. I want to play something where you can do interesting things most of the games you play. I am sort of picky, that's why I cannot accept TFT rng, but generally I will want something with multiple game play options. I also get bored easily, especially if there is a lot of down-time in the game (traveling, waiting, farming, all seem like a waste of time). I would like something mentally stimulating, which means there is room to improve your strategy I guess, bonus points if the mechanics are easy to learn and have out-play potential, bonus points if creativity is rewarded.

I favor competitive games, but non-competitive casual games are okay too, and honestly, are probably what I'm looking for.

Have you tried Magic Arena? IMO, it’s better than Hearthstone. It’s a good, casual game where you can come and go as you please without being penalized, but it can also be super competitive if you want it to be.

Sea of Thieves, or Halo Reach modded custom games maybe?

Otherwise maybe you should get into tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons. It's pretty much the only game where you can play as a pint-sized halfling tank paladin, a turtle-man druid, a minotaur with a weed addiction, a goblin masquerading as a small child in disguise in fear that the guards will kill her, a racist orc who was raised human and doesn't even realize that he's an orc, only limit is your creativity. Roll20.net is a good place to start, and watching this playlist will help you understand the game concepts a bit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00EvO-X6Wu4&list=PLDnRMnDDjAzK5uZLidDUtHtD1iN06Qe0G&index=2&t=0s

Most game devs are locking content behind play time through RNG or ranked systems (Warframe/League), putting you in open world sandboxes that will bore people who can't make their own fun (Sea of Thieves), or mobile games trying to sell you shortcuts to things that have been purposely stretched out to reward you only enough to keep you spending money.

We're probably not going to see games like the one you want until after Half-Life: Alyx releases, and game devs that have been lazily selling remakes and stretched content start trying to catch up. You could try Superhot as well, I believe that rewards creativity.

Path of Exile, that is if you like the old D2 and similar-style games.

In terms of creativity, the famed 'Skill Forest' originates here. No, seriously. The thing is INSANE. You can do all sorts of crazy builds; some will work, others not so much, but all of them are unique in their own way.

The main point of the game is finding the right balance for your builds; in PoE, you always trade something for something else at the start (usually defense for damage), but as you grow accustomed to your build, you become more able to find a way to bring both into the equation without altering your build's formula too much. That, and the boss fights are fun and always keep you on your toes.

Of course, the game itself has a tradeoff to players, too; as you start and get accustomed to its playstyle and direction, it'll be easy. Halfway through the playthrough, however, it stops holding your hand and starts throwing a lot harder stuff at you, meaning no more training wheels and you gotta actually start getting into to it to survive boss fights and avoid getting mobbed.

Also, the game is F2P like LoL. Bonus.

As for card games, I'd suggest Legends of Runeterra, but it's pass-based and you don't if you're getting selected again.

Ah, but that's just my two cents. Feel free to check PoE out if you wish.
