Wanting to learn coaching

xTJxBoss··1 votes·956 views

So honestly the idea of coaching catches my interest more than playing at a high level does. What I'd like to do the most is shadow or talk to a high level coach and learn the thought process behind a lot of the things that happen. If there's anybody that's in that position, or could put me in contact with someone in that position, please shoot me a message :) Alternatively, id also like to try coaching a lower ranked team in some sort competitive play. I know I understand the game better than I play it because I'm bad about tunnel vision and all the typical low elo problems, but It's something I'd like to learn more of!

Coaching is essentially teaching someone how to play the game. A coach knows what he knows most of the time from experiencing the game at a high level themselves.

What you're asking for is basically to be spoon fed every single drop of information. It's pretty extensive / demanding.

" I know I understand the game better than I play it because I'm bad about tunnel vision and all the typical low elo problems, but It's something I'd like to learn more of! "

If you really understood the game like you said, you probably wouldn't be in Bronze 3 with over 300 games. You would think you'd improve a bit on your " tunnel vision " after these 300 games for what you claim. If you truly understand the game, you wouldn't have the rest of " the typical low elo problems "

Are you trying to get someone to coach you for free? lmao

I don't think you understand what you're asking for here.

" Learning how to coach " Like I said, coaching is essentially teaching the game to someone. Could be as simple as explaining your reasoning behind what you believe is to be the most correct / optimal play in a scenario, which can range from the smallest of details to the most obvious.

Teaching someone the fundamentals and what they really mean. Understanding the correct action to a given situation in the game can be easily spotted from a replay if you " understand the game "

I have taught you how to coach. Why do you need a ' high elo ' player to teach you? so he can give you free coaching lessons?

If it counts for anything. I was Diamond 2 in Season 5, not exactly high elo, but arguably more than what the D5 lurkers around here will offer.

Not all coaches are high-elo. Based on your information casters couldn't cast games unless they were Master +. Truth is Coaching is taking basic concept anyone in ANY elo can learn and applying that information to others. You don't have to be GREAT at the game you just have to be GOOD at teaching. Learning how to ARTICULATE yourself and make your points with valid facts. The guy above is partly whats wrong with this community. You get toxic A-holes who get on forums to belittle someone because they have a sh!t life. Anyways I hope this helps! Just watch lots of videos don't be afraid to theory craft. Learn about Minion mechanics and find a bronze player and try shit out. You might not get anywhere but my advice is record your sessions and document improvement from lower elo players and if you plan on using it as a resume you have a portfolio of past successes. Don't let people like this guy above diminish your dream.

I appreciate it, I wasn't paying him any attention anyways. I'm looking more at team oriented coaching than individual coaching. I appreciate the advice and I'll try to do some form of it.

I've done a lot of low elo coaching and let me tell you, it's a huge clusterfuck. It's more babysitting and coddling than actual coaching. You can give real gameplay advice, real gameplay analysis, and it won't make much of a difference since 99% of the team's problem is going to be in communication. Team coaching is teaching them communication. First you teach them how to talk. There's easy stuff like summoner spells and ults, but tracking stuff like taric stun in the middle of fights or location of the enemy jungler at any given time is much more difficult. People need to know what's important and whether it's pertinent at the time. You don't need to say every time you're doing a camp but if you're mid-camp and a nearby lane looks aggro, you should tell them to wait for you to come or to chill and let you farm. The second part is teaching them how to listen. It's great that all this information is getting out there but if no one is paying attention to it or using it to their advantage, you don't get use out of it. It's very hard taking these intangible advantages and putting them to use. You have to teach the jungler how to abuse flash timers, teach the team how to turn a tp advantage into a gold advantage via objectives and rotations. There's no cookie-cutter way to win or do these things, so analyzing games and mistakes in decision making is a good way to go about this, but requires you to understand every single facet about this. This is where the problem comes in. Once you give advice to people, most people get defensive and argue with you. It may not come out at first but it eventually does. People are reluctant to change their play-styles, even when they're flat out wrong. Teams also often have internal issues that may have nothing to do with you. Replace the members and lose progress on teaching, or talk them into staying together and risk more volatile issues in the future.

In my experience, the only teams worth coaching, are the ones that don't need or ask for a coach. Go ahead and practice though, more power to you.

Most of the casters are, or have been, high elo. You don't have to be high rank to understand the game, but if you truly understand the game you will get to a high rank. You can have shitty mechanics but good game knowledge will carry you to at least gold/plat. I would know, I've seen it many times. Too often nowadays I see lower elo players claiming to understand the game at a high level, when in actuality they are misinformed or don't understand higher level concepts such as opportunity cost.

While you may be right in saying teaching is a separate skill from actually playing, playing gives the experience required to teach. You wouldn't ask for someone to teach you accounting if they make a living flipping burgers. You want someone with experience in the field that somewhat verifies they know what they're talking about.

In response to the actual OP, I can teach you a bit of what I know since I do coach, but there are so many other free diamond coaches that you would be competing with. Add me if you want me to give you some pointers as a coach and a player. I'm a diamond support main who has had quite a few students both individually and as a team.

Please refer to what I wrote. I believe coaching can be done by anyone.

I specifically said " A coach knows what he knows most of the time from experiencing the game at a high level themselves. "

MOST of the time.

But that's okay. You guys will down vote regardless and go for the more optimistic post.

I am not trying to diminish your dreams. I am trying to help you see reality for what it is. Not everyone who seeks out help for their goals are realistic or reasonable. Certainly not saying that is stopping them from doing what they would like. Basically what I mean is that you should try to understand the situation better.

But if OP would rather be blind and go through this in the dark, that is up to him. Please don't lie to yourself and waste your time.

Understand WHAT you are seeking. I am in no way trying to discourage your goals because of your rank or status.

Just because my comment was in some form negative, you decide to ignore my feedback? What kind of mind set is that when trying to understand your goals from all perspectives?

First of all, my previous comment said "I appreciate the feedback and I'm taking all of this information in." I don't know where you get the idea I ignored anyone's feedback. Did you expect me to say something like "damn you're right that seems hard nevermind"? I feel like some of you guys are over thinking this. I want to learn something new, so I made a post asking if someone would be willing to help me learn something new. This isn't some new lifestyle choice that like being a vegan. I want to learn to coach a league of legends team. And I've already asked that if you have a negative opinion to please keep it to yourself so you come back to reinforce why I shouldn't do it. I already understand it's not an overnight easy task and I've decided I want to do it, so please stop trying to tell me why I shouldn't.

Pretty sure anyone can read into your attitude. IF you think what you wrote was decent and helpful you are a sufferer of episodic acute stress and you probably aren't someone anyone enjoys being around. Maybe you should learn to comprehend what you wrote because I doubt anyone is reading it the way you think you are writing it.

What kitten said is true, a bronze 3 player cant coach. I'm d3 I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about. Its not being toxic its more putting out facts. I'm pretty sure that if ur bronze 3 you have next to no idea about how the game works and the only people you should coach should be under your rank at this point

This is not harassment, the only assistance you can get is get a coach for yourself. I If you want to coach, you have to atleast get gold or somethingfirst. And what Half G said legit makes no sense because we are talking about coaches not shoutcaster? The people who are boosting up your attitude are just doing that, not gonna help you improove

Yeah it does make sense because you can't just shout cast without fundamental knowledge of whats going on in the game. Responding to post with a thumb in your arse isn't helping anyone. He was asking for guidance, not to be someone's punching bag because they aren't well liked in real life and need to vent on a random. Maybe you and kitten should join a group of "dedicated arseholes" and forum a punk band group of jerking each other off with monkey semen as you make no music and become homeless scrubs of na.

Perhaps i can lend a hand here as well,

I myself coach many players, some above and below me. yes look me up i am a low bronzie and will claim a higher understanding of the game. not enough to coach plat+, but there in lies a point some people overlook. the simple thing to understand in coaching is that it is not just about how much you know, it is how well you can analyze and then correct while maintaining an understanding and trust of your player you hope to help. Do not try to coach those too far above you unless you are confident you have a game understanding that can REGULARLY meet their quality of gameplay.

before playing league i was a music tutor for 5 years. i fancied myself a decent trombonist, but i tutored for any brass instrument with a mouthpiece. seems odd, a trombone teaching a tuba, french horn, trumpet, but i used the things i learned and read about as well as my experience to help students grasp basic or complex ideas. if a trumpet needed to learn flutter tongue, i read how, analyzed his technique and brought him reference material. watched his technique grow and told him what he was still missing if needed.

** it wasnt that i could or could not demonstrate, though it makes it easier, but the fact that i as a trainer could understand the need, identify the need, bring resources as reference to clarify how to accomplish something, and then implement and guide as an individual improved. that is the art of coaching or teaching at the basics.**

after knowing how to do your job comes the point of earning respect and trust of your team you intend to work with. again people blindly look for high ranks and that makes tasks easier to be taken seriously, but it should never be an end all be all.

i am no mechanical god in the game, my weapon is understanding the game. my ranking may or may not change this season based on how much time i can play ranked, coaching multiple teams while managing their schedules and looking to make more takes its toll. as such i am looking for good people willing to coach who have a base of game knowledge or time to acquire it seriously. not to mention i am always looking for potential staff for media or management.

I really don't understand what you're problem is. Let me make this as clear as possible. If you're not here to offer assistance then get the hell out. I've tried to be as nice as possible about asking but the point I'm making to you is I don't give a damn about your opinion. Leave me alone, anything after this I'm considering harassment. Again, I'm here asking if anyone is willing to help me learn a new skill, if not then cool. If someone will, great. I'm not debating on if I'm capable or not.
