Bit of advice I will give you right now: DON'T JUMP INTO RANKED AS SOON AS YOU HIT LVL 30! Many other players have made this mistake. Take your time finding what works for you and make sure you get at least two full rune pages filled out with Tier 3 Runes. Heck I've been playing for about a year now and I STILL haven't gotten into ranked. Though I'm thinking about getting into it this season. Hopefully... Maybe.
The Leauge System (ELO was the old system name but it just stuck is all) is uh... Complex is the simplest way I can put it I think. Sorry I can't play though right now. Tryout every champion in Free Rotation if you can. You might find a champion you just click with. It can be very fun and rewarding to play that champion for you. I'm sure other players who have been playing for a longer time then me will have more advice though.
Choosing the best role for you is easy. It is based on a mix of your playstyle and what champions that you like. If you like to be alone and play engage tanks then play top or jungle. If you want to lane with someone but don't want the pressure of csing play support. If you want to play with someone and carry the game play adc. If you want to play mobile champs who do a f*ck ton of damage but don't want to jungle play mid and vice versa if you do not want to lane.
Elo system is simple. bronze 5-3 equals a mix of trolls and extremely bad players bronze 2-1 equals less trolls and fairly bad players. They usually struggle in quite a few areas of play. silver 5 players equal bronze 2-3 players who think they are good. silver 4-1 players are bronze players except they were able to fix either their ability to cs/position/map awareness/etc etc but are still generally weak in most of the mechanics of the game. gold 5-1 players are slightly better but still lack skill in a few areas plat 5-1 players are mechanically decent but still not great diamond 5-2 are where most of trolls are and is imo elo hell diamond 1 is where a lot of 1 trick ponys are and when they get tired of dodging and don't get their champ/role they will feed master - challenger is pretty much one trick ponys and pro/ex pro players with your occasional decently skilled player. Still a lot of trolls though. If you watch Imaqtpie then you know of DoToT.
The way it works is you play your 10 placement matches. If you do not duo then you will play against people who are unranked as well for at least your 1st two games. If you keep winning you will start playing against higher elo players. To my understanding an account that has never been ranked before can only get up to silver 1 or gold 5 if they win all 10 games. I am not sure about if you duo with higher elo players and still win most of your games since it will boost your mmr.
After that you need to get to 100 lp. After you get 100 lp you will go into promos. Promos will be a best 2 out of 3 for division and 3 out of 5 for tier.
You will get lp based off of your rank and mmr. If your mmr is lower than your rank (meaning you lose a lot) then you will gain and lose the same amount of lp when you win and lose which makes climbing difficult. If you win a lot and your mmr is higher than your rank then you can gain up to 32(highest I have ever gotten) lp per win and you will usually lose less than 10-15. If your mmr gets high enough you can skip divisions(going from silver 3-1 after winning promos). As far as I know you can't skip tier promos meaning you will never skip silver 1, gold 1 etc etc.
Hope this explained it enough for you.
