Core game skills are things you need to know no matter what champion or role you are playing. Here's a (probably incomplete) list off the top of my head:

Basic Skills: vision and map awareness, understanding what each stat does, how to choose items, learning all the forms of crowd control. Understanding classes of champions and their roles in the game. Particularly that last one: when you are on a given champ, what are you supposed to do within your team? csing is also a core skill on farming champions (mid, top, adc). Advanced Skills: wave control and rotations, trading, and more.

You'll learn these fastest if you minimize the amount of things that change game-to-game. Here's a list of ways to do that:

  1. Play supports (like Sona). Supports don't have to worry about csing, which is quite honestly a really hard skill to learn and has a HUGE effect on your power level. Supports tend to have a pretty constant power level unless one side of bot lane feeds hard. Also, the role is not in high demand so you'll get it a lot.

  2. Play the same few champions. Thinking "What does that ability do, again?" each time you cast it, is a HUGE drain on your mental resources. There are TONS of champions and you have TONS of time to learn them. Don't rush to learn them all right away; focus on the things that persist between champions and you'll have a much easier time picking up new ones.

  3. Play champions who can support OR go elsewhere. So when you start branching out into other lanes, you'll already be comfortable on that champion. Karma, Lulu, Morgana, Annie, and Sion are all excellent choices here.

  4. Find champions who fit your personality and playstyle. If you're the kind of person who likes to charge in headfirst without worrying about consequences, playing someone who needs to stick back is not going to feel as natural to you. Play what's natural first, so you don't have to spend extra energy forcing yourself to go against your instincts.

  5. For the advanced skills, watch a couple LCS games and listen to what the casters are saying. You'll learn a lot. Don't forget, though, that the champions you see in the LCS may not be best for you. Those champions are the best in a highly coordinated, highly skilled environment. Your games will be neither of those, so a simpler champion like Annie or Garen will probably give you better results.

Here's a document I started writing a while ago and never got around to finishing that has some random stuff: https://etherpad.net/p/League_Introduction

Finally, if you want to play with me, I'm totally up for it. The times when I play are pretty erratic at the moment, and I might be playing on any of three accounts: Hyrum Graff, Not Pwyff, or Jesus Crits. Feel free to add me on any or all of them.

Hey there! It's so nice to see some new players! I'm a Leader at Azuline gaming. We like to play normals with any level and we love helping new players (cuz lets face it, new players get some pretty toxic people in their games). You can also add me on League: Lady Eniette
