5 Bans instead of 3

Hey Riot,

I had an idea about the banning phase in draft modes that I thought might warrant writing to you about. What if, instead of banning 3 champs on each side, each team was given 5 bans, and each player on the team got to control one of the bans? With the steady increase of champions in League, banning 5 champs wouldn't thin the options too much. If you gave each player one ban, the banning phase would be a lot more fair, especially since the first player on each team seems to become first player randomly. I feel like if each player felt they were able to contribute to the ban phase equally, and were able to ban a champ that they just really didn't feel like dealing with, or would counter their pick hard, there would be less fighting, negativity, and maybe more cooperation. I thought of some negatives to this, and solutions to those negatives:

  1. Players who ban champs they don't like are equally likely to have champs banned on them that they like but others don't, giving both sides equal advantages/disadvantages.
  2. Teams hating on one particular role (Adc, Tank, Jungle, etc.) If players choose to run this course, they run the risk of the enemy team having the availability to pick what they want from other roles, so if there is a shortage of junglers to pick from, they can pick Yasuo mid, Vayne or Tristana Adc, etc. Also, if certain champions are continuously banned, it would give players good incentive to try out other champions, and they could be surprised to find they are awesome at Yorick, Zac, Galio, or another less frequently played champion.
  3. Teams banning duos and trios of champs that work well together will force the enemy team to explore new team combos. For example: A team doesn't ban Yasuo, but every ban they do make is a champion with a knock-up, keeping that team from giving Yasuo more opportunities to hit his ult. If the other team wants Yasuo bad enough, they will have to learn to be accurate with his knock-up more, or instead of them building their team around his Knock-Ups, they are forced to take another strategic avenue, maybe heavy cc so he can sail in and slice up the competition. All in all, the idea behind this is to hopefully give players more incentive to branch out and explore all the League has to offer Champ-wise, give a more fair feel to draft, and create more opportunities for growth and bonding as teams are put into scenarios where strategizing and cooperating mean putting a W on the scoreboard.

Thanks again for your time. Feel free to respond and let me know if this is a viable idea.

It's old history now but when Dominion had regular tournaments we let each team have two extra bans for a total of 5 per side and it worked great. That was back when LoL was ~100 champs. We decided 10% of all champs would be a fair amount and added 4 to the total bans. It was a good time and we saw a lot more champion pick variance in competition after that.
