Howdie! So i have been a lore nerd for a while now, i enjoy the universe of league of legends and joined the game around the end of season 5. Ever since i read my first rito certified story (which was Ahri one) I interested myself on the subject and discovered that the institute of war, the summoners and basically everything that make the game we are playing (not the lore i know the game ain't cannon because of that anymore) was deleted, and that you guys are working hard at completely eradicating this part of the story from the universe.

And i wondered why? Cause 'ere is what i understood, then what i thought :

  • Previously everything was circling around the league of legends, and the summoners were extremely powerful mages who were controlling champions, and deciding the fate of the world nations onto the field of justice. The champions were nothing but living weapons, being entirely controlled by the summoners and finally, the summoners were, once again, SO POWERFUL that not even noxus would dare to disobey them.

--> This was causing many problems, first was the fact that the summoners were so powerful and that everything had to circle around the league of legends. This was posing limits to the possibilities of evolution of the lore, and from what i understood, the old lore was locked and couldn't evolve. The countries couldn't wage war, the powerful champions would not evolve and would be locked away by the summoners in case they were evil, and the list goes on.

Next was the fact that it had a logical and a "character complexification" (i created my own words lemme alone) problem. The champions were controlled by the summoners, which means that a being like freacking XERATH, or even nowadays, AURELION SOL, would be a puppet on the hands of the summoners, WHICH is stupid of course. Because or the summoners are creatures that have a power beyond the ones of gods, or gods are quite weak in this universe. As for the new word i invented (it's mine now) , i mean by that that the characters would do their life, go to the league of legends, become living weapons and....the end. The limit was apparent.

But what i wonder is why decide to literally ERASE the idea that created the game and focus on building a world without it, instead of not trying to make that idea transform and mutate into something better? So here is what that brain of mine (shiiiny) pooped as an idea :

The summoners are a group of mages, that is most certainly truth. A mage weaves power and a summoner uses those powers to summon a creature and make it battle for him. See that definition? Well forget it.

How i see an evolution that could bring back this concept and maybe even prove to be an inspiration to modify certain things in the game itself, who would find itself once again linked to the lore, would be to make the summoners an organisation based on not judging others and maintaining peace on the world, but on protecting it.

With threats like the void existing, and many more things that you guys probably know and we don't, the league origins could go back to a mage who would have faced such a threat on his life and then decided to team up with other mages to battle let's say, a beast. But as they teamed up and fought against it, they were once again threw back and discovered they could never win by themselves. And as such, they decided to attempt to summon not creatures to aid them as this proven to be useless, but warriors who could aid them in their fight.

After doing so and battling with their new found warriors the beast and sealing it, they would have understood that runeterra was not safe at all, and that the land itself could be anihilated by beings such as the one they had fought easily, and that many more threats, even some aside beast from other worlds (such as the earth runes) had to be dealt with. And as such, they would have decided to create an order that the most powerful mages could join in order to face such threats. I actually "wrote a story" at the end to get the true feeling of what i mean but that's the resume for those who aren't patient enough to go untill the end XD; (since this is already a freacking wall of text, i love wall of texts.)

When it comes to the link between summoners and champions, we would COMPLETELY PUT TO THE TRASH the fact that they CONTROL them. And replace it with the fact that they are LINKED to them :

Let's say that the summoners who wishes to have a champion by their side on the battles to come summon them on the summoning chamber. The ritual would first differ based on what the summoner wishes to summon, for instance, if they wish to summon a being who is much more powerful than them but poses no Evil threat to them, they would go thought a different ritual than when they summon a being that is equivalent or even in term of power with them, and finally, another ritual could be done in order for them to summon a being that is tainted by evil thoughts/aura and who could be a threat to the summoner. (something cool like giving those rituals a name based on the three founding summoners and the champions they summoned would be cool too yo.)

Once the being is summoned, the second part of the ritual would then start, which is quite simple. The summoner want the being to become it's champion and as such, the being possess choices :

  • Does it accept from mere chatting and meeting with the summoner? Ahri for instance.
  • Does it refuses to join the summoner if he cannot pose a challenge/beat him/her? Riven as an example.
  • Does it accept only if the summoner give something in exchange for his/her services? Elise who could ask for sacrifices.
  • Or does it refuses?

In any case, once the being would accept to be linked to that summoner and become it's champion, it would create a link. The two would then work in a symbiosis, the summoner would guide the path and strengthen the champions as he travels and battles, while the champions would have it's own freewill and choose to obey to the summoner only because of what happened during the ritual.

And as the two would come to travel and battle more and more together, they would become stronger, and would work better and better with one another, which is symbolised by the mastery points.

And here is the worst champion to work with all of that put into the situation as an example :

Xerath is a being of pure power and is at the level of a god, he is evil and wish to conquer Shurima and kill Azir once and for all. As such, the summoner who would want to have him as his champion would not have a fun time.

Xerath would refuse every demands to join the league, he would even kill those who pissed him off. But then would see potential in one single summoner, he would then decide what would be the stakes, what the summoner would offer, what he would win in all of this. He could ask for them to use their influence to strengthen his armies, he could ask for even more power, he could even ask for the summoners to lay waste on his opponent armies (of course, the summoners don't accept everything eh, negotiations are made.) And finally he would have the possibility to battle against azir and train for the day he would strike him down in a real battle.

Cause let's talk about this. Twisted treeline, summoners rift. Why even battle in those place, with champions against champions at this point? Well the answer for this, is to become stronger.

With the constant world threats that appears everywhere, the summoners cannot stay silent and wait for something to blow the f**k up, and as such, they train in arenas for the day they will fight for real. As for the champions, they battle within there for their own reason. Some wishes only to become stronger, others seek an opponent who could aid them in their quest after those battles. Others are here only for the things they will win out of those battles (for instance, Ahri would be able to keep the life essence she so desperately search to have after each battle within the rift.) and many other reasons may exist that only relate to some champions, with even simply the pleasure of killing Jhin , even a single opponent again and again. (the training part of those arenas would be the nexus, which as "spiritual point thingies" would be able to resurrect the champions who fall during the battle, as long as they are active and that a summoner is present. And that they can rebuild themselves if they are not attacked for an extended period of time.)

Finally, let's talk about beings such as nocturne or fiddlesticks, those people are known in the old lore for being things that the summoners could not control, and that they locked away so that they would not pose any more problems. For those well i would see them locked in seals within the institute of war, and simply... released on the arenas so that they can be used as weapons. They aren't controlled, they are just rampaging around.

And the last thing i did not cover was the impact on the world. The institute of war (name might not fit anymore now that i think about it) is no longer an arbiter for the other nations. They protect the world from world wide threats such as the void for example. As such, even if noxus were to claim the entire continent of runeterra, they would not move a finger. They protect the World, not the nations. Summoners who become close to one or another nation can be throwed out of the league, or, another idea i got, would receive a new title that would change how much they can do as summoners.

Finally for the hierarchy well f* me i only place the founders above everyone else. It could be based on ranks, or not, but yeah, founders above.

Now that's a lot of information, and i resume a lot, so here is a story to make it clearer. It would be the back story of all of this with the founding of the league at the end. Since i don't remember the name of the dude who founded the league in the lore i'm going to create them myself and use several champions to make the thing clearer, as well as also start on a old point of the story but don't take that for granted since i personally do not have enough knowledge to know where to place the start of the league. So 'ere i go. (Also i suck at naming things, so bear with me lol.)

During the dark age of the reign of mordekaiser, was a man named Estus. A powerful mage who roamed the lands of runeterra, offering his aid and his skills to those who would pay him. He wandered from south to north, from east to west, he had saw beasts and warriors, humans and creatures, but nothing in his life could have prepared him to such a thing...

The creature stand in front of him, huge, probably as big as an house, looking down on him with voracious eyes. Estus had already threw all of his mana at the beast. Fire, air, earth, arcane, nothing could bring the creature down. Hiden within a cave he was cowering in fear, as the beast started to eat away the cave itself, growing bigger in the process. The mage regained his calm, and looked around within the cave. He ended up finding a hole digging beneath the surface, it was not the best route to try and get out of here, but it was better than ending up in this creature belly. The man slid down the hole and worked his way through the tunnel, during several days, only the light of his barely engulfed in fire hand could light the path. But on the night of the third day, the man was able to dig he way out of the cave, and retrieve the pleasure of feeling the wind blow on his face. But he had no time to waste, the creature was still alive, and it looked like it was merely starting to become a threat.

The man flew to the nearest city, and bought for a room at the inn. He then pulled out his crystal shard and closed his eyes as it vibrated in his hands. "What?" Answered a first voice, seemingly grumpy from being called so late at night. "I'm sorry to disturb you Ishram, but we have a problem. I need you to rejoin me as soon as possible." answered Estus. The grumpy mage sighed as he cut the connection. Estus know he was on the way. But the shard then lit up once more as a female voice echoed into his mind. It was Eshra, who weren't that happy either about being called so late at night. Repeating the same words, the woman answered she would be there by dawn, as the man placed the shard back in his pocket, and lied down on the bed.

As the sun rose up above the inn, Estus aided outside. Not to his surprise, the two other mages were already on the horizon, aiding toward him on foot. The three of them met at the inn as Estus took them to his room. Then he explained what he had faced. Eshra was left confused and hesitant to believe him, while Ishram was interested about such a creature existing. The three of them passed the rest of the day planning their approach as the night fell once again on the inn. But this time none of them would head to sleep, the three of them headed off to the creature last known position, with the sole intention of destroying it. But once they arrived, things quickly got out of hand.

The creature had first of all doubled in size, while it's aura alone was making the mages tremble just by standing dozens of meters away from it. They battled the beast, but were soon to be overwhelmed by the creature. Their power was not enough, they needed something more. The group warped away to a mountain with the last bits of energy they had left, and set camp there. They had tried everything, from arcane magic to summoning beasts, and in the end, one of them was almost devoured.

It was at this time that a portal opened aside their camp, and that Fellor stepped out of it. The three of them lifted their head at the one who had teached them many things with confusion, as they wondered why he was in such a place. To that, the old man answered that he had felt though them the power of their opponent, and that he had the solution who would cleanse away this pesky problem.

The man started drawing a huge circle with pure arcane energy, and then asked the three of them to enter it, as he sat on the middle. He then asked them to draw symboles they had never seen before, and sit in the middle of them. After doing so, the summoners mind were as...freed from their bodies.

The summoners could feel the world circling around them, and in a powerful wave of energy, sent a powerful call within the huge circle they were in. These calls were amplified by the old man tremendous power, as it launched through the land itself. It was heard by many, but only three were displaced from their original location, to the summoning circle. One had been snatched away from her world by Ishram promises of power and glory, another one had heard the call to fight a beast that threatened the world itself, and the final one was allured by the promise of the discovery of e creature none had seen before. Their name were morgana, Ryze and Ezreal.

The three were left confused within the circle, as the roar of the beast echoed through the destroyed forest. There weren't much time left, and the three mages asked desperately for the warriors to aid them into beating the beast. Without much of a choice left in the mater, the three warriors accepted, as they turned to the creature. The seven of them launched themselves against the giant, as the clouds hid the moon in the sky.

After hours of battles, the mages even though winning the upper hand against the beast, discovered with horror that they could not destroy it no matter how much they tried. And as such, taking advantage of the fact that the creature was forbidden from moving at all, the old mage focussed all of his power around the creature and created a massive seal around it, enclosing it forever within it. The cost however, was his life, as the energy released were too much for a human body to handle.

The land destroyed, the beast captured and the warriors as much as the mages tired and hurt from the battle, none of the three mages had the time to cry for their lost master, as a frightening thought appeared within their mind. If one such being existed within runeterra, many others could be wandering the world right now as they had achieved victory. And as such Estus decided that the three of them would create a place were such threats could be dealt with as soon as discovered, where they would accept the most powerful mages of runeterra and teach them the ways of battling with a trusted warrior. Renaming themselves summoners, and calling the ones who had accepted to aid them into battling this being champions, Estus decided to name the place that would protect the world from such terrible foes, the league of legends. As for the three champions who had battled against this being, two of them were sent back home, with the promise that they would help the summoners if they ever had to fight such threats on the future. While morgana, seeing how powerful were the summoners who had called upon her, stayed with them as she witnessed the three mages starting to change the destroyed landscape into a massive building, with the creature, now named Cho gath, enclosed beyond the new formed institute of war. They promised her power, and they would not betray their promises.

The end

So yeah. Here you go. And yes summoners can of course link themselves to multiple champions depending on their power. Tell me watcha think of it, and while this is directed toward RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIto games, up vote that shit so they see it if you find it to be an interesting idea. Alright bu bye.

I don't think Xerath would be the most problematic champ to work with.

Kindred RekSai and Renekton seem more problematic. I mean Kindred is the spirit of death, there really isn't anything that they could gain from such a pact with a summoner. Rek'sai is a wild beast,so why would she join anyone? And Renekton seems to have fallen so deep into his madness, that there is no reasoning with him anymore.

And in general one of the problems with the league was that the league would solve the problems for the champions. AurelionSol(who would likely not want to make a pact with a mortal after the targonians tricked him into servitude) for example would obviously want the summoners to help him remove the crown from his head. But where would that leave Aurelion Sols story? It would basically shift his quest from him to the summoner.
