Legends Never Die MV is Just What it Needed
The MV for “Legends Never Die” really adds another element to the song. As the theme for Worlds 2017, it felt like the X-factor was missing. It was never a bad song, but it lacked a sense of uniqueness that songs from previous years had.
Imagine Dragon’s “Warriors” definitely had that style unique to their band. “Worlds Collide ft. Nicki Taylor” is defined by its strong vocals and excellent play with ornaments and instrumentation. Zedd’s “Ignite”, although questioned by some including myself at first, after the third listen or so really shined as a Worlds themed song with the electronic style as expected from Zedd.
“Legends Never Die” no doubt is a Worlds themed song and is fitting for this year’s competition. It certainly wasn’t lacking in talent as the vocals are certainly pristine. However, it definitely felt like it was produced in house, kind of like “Worlds Collide.” Except this is the second of its kind and therefore has less novelty. And I think this is the biggest problem. This song feels overshadowed by its predecessor. Take a listen to “Worlds Collide” and you can probably hear the same artistic techniques being used, powerful voices, dynamic buildups, one big peak. When I first listened to “Worlds Collide” I quite enjoyed the style that it brought. But hearing the same style in “Legends Never Die” is quite a turn off. It feels like they’re producing based on a formula.
For example remember the original version of “Piercing Light”? Yeah didn’t think so (unless you’re a major opponent of electronic music). The original version blended in with all the other rock instrumentals in Riot’s repertoire. Mako’s remix was much stronger and created a style that was much more unique than traditional rock band instrumentation. The remixes in “Warsongs” are each done by a different artist who brings their own style to the table which really increases variety. It makes things easier to listen to, to distinguish, and to choose a favorite.
The same can be said for the Worlds themes to date. The variety comes from different artists making the music. When Riot becomes heavily involved, they start to sound alike. But the MVs really add another layer to the music. Okay, no doubt “Warriors” had the greatest MV, and “Worlds Collide” didn’t really have one as it was just an extended promotional with lots of special effects, but each one added a visual to remember the music by. And when done right these visuals align with the flow of the music and really bring out the best of a song, even if it doesn’t suit your taste.
The MV also adds a more concrete story to each. You can track a player’s road to Worlds in the “Warriors” MV. You can see a history of Worlds in “Ignite”. The story of Worlds 2015 in “Worlds Collide.” And in “Legends Never Die” you see three champions working to become legends. Why Ashe, Garen, and Lee Sin? Don’t ask me.
But no doubt it makes the song more memorable which is exactly what it needs right now.
