In the new short story, the Curator's Gamble, there was this line:
Januk was scowling. “The Guild aren’t particularly fond of you, Ezreal.”
Guild is a singular word, so it should be "The Guild isn't particularly fond of you, Ezreal."
You might be surprised to know, this isn't a mistake. We did actually question this in the editorial process.
You'll note this is Januk speaking. People don't always have perfect grammar and diction. I think this is fine, the fact that he says this shows us something about his character.
British vs American English.
I think it depends on how unified the subject is - does it refer to a single well-organized entity, or a group of entities loosely working together? I’d say a “guild” is typically the latter.
Or it could have something to do with proper nouns only.
Possibly both.
Perhaps he was thinking of the Guild as it's multiple members, a "they" form of thinking to describe the one whole.
So his coding for "The Guild" is defined to himself as "the members". This would make his choice of words grammatically correct by his own internal definition/understanding.
