Is it just me or is Riot not even trying to hype up new releases anymore?

Remember Jhin's release?

  • Several image teasers.
  • A video teaser.
  • "leaks" over months.
  • The best damn music this game has ever seen.
  • A nice launch page.

That was masterful. We were all hyped for this guy.

Most of the champions and reworks in this period were about that level of hype (Bard, Sion's rework, those guys). Not quite as high most of the time, but there was something, you know?

Now, look at recent releases.

Neeko was briefly cool on PBE, but was immediately forgotten. She was briefly a new Teemo, but isn't really a big deal. Sylas got a nice trailer, but didn't even get his own theme. His login screen was just a portion of the Season launch. Yuumi honestly, the only reason we care about this champ is her gimmick. Not hyped very much. Qiyana Not only does nobody give a shit about her on live, but people didn't even care about her while she was on Beta. She didn't even get a proper launch page; she just got a glorified reddit post on the front page of the League site.

can we stop acting like Jhin was the standard?

yes, it would be nice to have cinematics more and genuine hype put into it, but to act like they've always been this "HOLY SHIT WHATS COMING NEXT" is ridiculous. Jhin was simply lucky enough to be the champ to be hyped to ludicrous degrees. and since then, people have been comparing champ releases to him

Login screens are because they're changing the client and pretty much removing them. The people that work on them, like the art and music teams, are likely already working on other projects.

Everything else could be a number of things. Maybe the scheduling got fucked. Maybe the frequent leaks are messing stuff up(like Neeko/the Winter Wonder skins and Yuumi getting leaked). Maybe they're just lazy. Maybe they don't want to waste time hyping them up and want to be able to go straight into another project. Ect, ect.

EdgeLady7/22/2019, 12:14:04 AM13 votes

Sylas did get a login theme, just not an animated splash. I'm grateful he did get a login screen of a sort, at least.

But yeah, as I've said before, this is likely due to Riot's money loss and budget costs. Possibly combined with the more positive hope that they're also working on a new game, but...honestly, they should be more focused on making the quality of their current game as consistent as possible before taking a leap with shafting off half of their departments onto something they aren't revealing and their current playerbase knows nothing about. Because, while we can speculate, all we see before our eyes is League of Legends becoming cheapened. It saddens me.

Dont forget the fact that reworks arent even that hyped atleast this year anyways. Morde wasn't given anything to hype him up except a video with Rioters talking about him when he shouldve gotten a cinematic, if Pantheon isn't given anything to hype him up it will clearly show that Riots not really make stuff hyped anymore I mean they leaked his skin map for his dragonslayer chroma so I wouldnt be surprised if they dont have alot planned. The best teasers IMO were Jhin, Aurelion Sol, and Warwick it brought you to their world and had you experience them and what they see or act like they are amazing. Sylas' theme is based off the Demacian one just turned sinister (Hes the only new champ Ive been hyped for) Qiyana, Yuumi, and Neeko all weren't as amazing as they could be ESPECIALLY Qiyana for the leader and poster child of a new region you'd think she'd be alot cooler and more original

Even though Jhin was an exception, it’d be cool if his example became the norm.

I doubt Riot lacks the resources to make it happen, plus then people might actually be attracted to new champions.

looks at Qiyana

The effort put into new champs release pages has just been lackluster of late

Look at 2016's champs. Jhin - CGI trailer, hype into release. Reveal page was this: https://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/page/champion-reveal-jhin-virtuoso Sol - CGI trailer. Reveal page: https://euw.leagueoflegends.com/en/page/champion-reveal-aurelion-sol-star-forger Taliyah (their unwanted child) - CGI/cell animated trailer, story involving Yasuo. Reveal page: https://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/page/champion-reveal-taliyah-stoneweaver Kled - CGI trailer plus reveal page.

I could go on.

Then look at this years: Qiyana - Reveal page: https://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/champions-skins/champion-reveal/qiyana-rundown Yuumi... er.. Riot? Is this it? https://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/champions-skins/champion-reveal/yuumi https://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/champions-skins/champion-preview/yuumi-abilities

Wait... https://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/champions-skins/champion-reveal She's not even listed on this link. Why?

Riot, did the person making these pages leave?

SSmotzer7/22/2019, 2:47:38 AM4 votes

People don't buy champions, they mostly earn them with BE. Skins are where the money is at. Therefore, they hype the skins over the champions.

Next champion : Zed Studen, let's put Zed's login screen. And give her a shuriken and make her spirit like Kayn's and looks like Syndra. Lol

GreenLore7/22/2019, 12:06:58 PM3 votes

To be fair, Jhins teaser was so drawn out because they started to tease him before the winter break, even though they only revealed him after said winter break was over, stretching Jhins teaser longer than anyone elses.

That being said I agree that teasers have gotten less and less focus. I mean when was the last time any new champ/VGU got an animated teaser? And I'm not talking about animated teasers that use the ingame models(like the one of Sylas ), but I'm talking about teasers like the ones for Ekko, AurelionSol or Warwick

It's especially bad when you remember that Qiyana was the launch champ for a new region.

Targon7/22/2019, 2:19:14 PM3 votes

Jhin's was really exciting, but there were other champions that Riot put a least some hype or easter eggs in, such as Bard AurelionSol Kled and Ivern. I miss those personally.

Actually Terible7/22/2019, 2:30:04 PM3 votes

Everyones saying jhin was the standard of hype. Anyone remember vi or jinx? Or have I been here too long. Back in the seasonn3-4 days they used to make full length cinematic MUSIC VIDEOS for champs and they went viral. Now all you get is a shitty redit post and you get to log on and go OH. Look. A new champion i had no idea was even coming out.

Vlada Cut7/22/2019, 2:49:32 PM3 votes

Camille Swain Irelia Aatrox Kaisa were the last good ones. Mordekaiser had an insane log in THEME but not the log in SCREEN. WTF Riot you could've hyped our revamped metal daddy of an antagonist. Wait, who's Zoe again?

Ηuawei7/22/2019, 7:19:52 PM3 votes

You forgot about Jinx's hype were everyone lost their shit and the awesome music video.

Literally everyone was trying to play Jinx on release. Even me that i don't play adc in general

Camille Ferrøs7/22/2019, 6:22:01 AM2 votes

No, it's not just you, its riots dumb ideology.

ZER0 27/24/2019, 10:51:32 AM2 votes

Jinx had a huge teaser, music video on release, etc etc. Also ekko. I don't expect them to do huge things like that for every release, but it was wonderful when we got teasers at least.

Pika Fox7/22/2019, 2:33:35 AM1 votes

Mostly because for most of them the community kinda sold them for them. The community reaction to yuumi made its own hype

church arson7/22/2019, 2:47:15 PM1 votes

As a Jhin main, I can say his release was something extra.

Yes, these weren't hyped enough, but at least compare them to something else so the difference is clearer.

ModRowanstar7/29/2019, 2:14:10 PM1 votes

While I agree there are issues, I am tired of the constant threads about how bad League is. Why would anyone want to improve for ppl rooting against them? I still enjoy the game and yall ask for focus on gameplay and old champs over new, but here you are whining about new not getting enough focus. Pick a side, stick to it.

Tin Obliterates7/22/2019, 4:08:48 PM1 votes

Morde's 'Reimagining the Iron Revenant' was pretty cool, but for some reason he didn't even get a champion spotlight and he also just got a shitty reveal page like Qiyana.

Eleshakai7/22/2019, 4:59:34 PM1 votes

I really liked Neeko's release. They tied her into the Nexus Blitz event and the holiday season well, with the little interactive comic, the music(which was probably my favourite music they've done - except maybe Diana's way back when), etc.

4 Step Cadence7/29/2019, 2:42:53 PM1 votes

So this is something I just remembered that no one has seemed to bring up yet.

The in-game teasers also appear to be absent.

Kindred's mark, Zoe's bubble, an unseen Kai'Sa one-shotting herald/baron... All of these and more were shown in the game to tease the release of their respective champions. These teaser were something that appealed to people who care more about the gameplay than lore, as they show off in-game mechanics. I personally miss them.

Just think if Neeko got something like this. You'd be fucking around in practice mode and occasionally you'd see the champion you're playing, maybe staring at you from the jungle. And when you walk up to them, they disappear. It would have been creepy, sure, but it would have been a great way to show off Neeko's mimic and stealth mechanics, as well as her curious and playful nature.

BackdoorPrincess7/22/2019, 5:55:10 AM1 votes

I'd rather talk about why Qiyana got her ult buff between pbe and live, and why her ult needed to have a knockback as well as a stun duration/damage/range that long

ModCaptainMårvelous7/22/2019, 7:56:32 AM1 votes

Not really fair comparing Jhin because he was probably the BEST one they ever had. Hell, even champions that time frame (Illaoi for example) didn't compare.

But yeah, I think Jhin is more so the exception than the rule. After him most release are now 1-2 teasers.

PellevalVo7/22/2019, 4:15:08 AM1 votes

Arcade Qiyana looks dummy thicc on the login screen tho

MegaHuff7/22/2019, 11:36:44 PM1 votes

Haha, it's like TFT didn't just get hyped to high heaven just a short time ago. They probably are focusing less on champion reveals because they know the actual game is fucked, and trying to focus more on showcasing things that will attract casuals. cough TFT!

Wolfeur7/22/2019, 11:54:10 AM1 votes

Sylas has his theme. The animation was a portion of the Season, but the music was his own.

Dead Anime Dad7/23/2019, 8:10:55 AM1 votes

Qiyana's crime was being not only relatively unlikeable, but also having a boring kit while being released shortly after Mordekaiser's rework, and he overshadowed her HARD.
