My problem with the Demacia lore.

So as we all know magic in Demacia is a big no no. And Demacia is supposed to represent the kingdom the does everything with honor and justice. I remember a Rioter said that people inside of Demacia don't think that magic exists at all since its so well defended and guarded. Evelynn somehow gets inside does what she does and people don't believe that some sort of a demonic being killed them. Understandable right ¿ Since they have the walls guards etc. And now somehow magic and mages are everywhere. Demacia is filled with mages that are being imprisoned, killed . cleaned etc. And how is that exactly ¿ Wasn't Demacia supposed to be a safe place with literally 0 magic in any shape or form. How there are mages everywhere hiding forming an army preparing to destroy everything in their path. And why people were laughing and not believing Vayne that something magical killed her parents while mages are everywhere around Demacia¿ I don't know but this really took an 180 turn. From a medieval kingdom with no magic just swords horses etc. to a land filled with giant magic jails mage hunters magic police, and now in a civil war with magic users... Remember Demacia having 0 magic inside....

So here’s the thing. I think Riot writers really like the concept of magic. And that makes some sense, it’s literally what defines the fantasy setting.

They also have a habit of rewriting their own lore, making rather large claims, and then not following through with them. And this too is kind of expected. I have got the feeling that they’re more or less riding by the seat of their pants.

It was most obvious with the Darkin rewrite where between two champions they went from alien invaders to Ascended with PTSD.

Demacia was originally pitched as a setting with little to no magic. Actually the entirety of Runeterra post great retcon was pitched as a setting with little to no magic. But with each update that seems to be less and less true.

So we get to Demacia which was always the most overbearing anti-magic place to the point that’s really all there is to the country. Almost every lore involving Demacia struggles with the mage problem. It’s clear a story about the problems of oppression is the story the writers want to tell and ultimately more power to them. It’s their story, we can complain about not liking it. But ultimately we are not the writers.

Now, I have no interest in the mage problem. From what I’ve read, Dragon Age did it better and with more nuance. And I don’t even think Dragon Age did it all that well, to be honest.

When I heard that Demacia was going to have a medieval militaristic focus I was excited. Perhaps a story drawing inspiration from the Song of Roland, with the fabled paladins standing against the invaders. Would work great with Garen and Noxus. Perhaps stories of lords and tournaments and succession. All that stuff I love.

Instead, because the writers love magic even in the least magic part of the setting it gets the focus. And you can’t have a magic focused story without there being quite a few mages to do the lifting of the story. So any past information on scarcity needed to be retconned for the story they want to tell to take place.

Perhaps when it’s blown over we’ll get stories you and I will get stories we like. But if you don’t like the direction they’re taking Demacian lore, you can do as I do, and just not read it.
