Can we get a red to remind people that visuals and gameplay have to compliment one another?
I'm seeing a ton of posts about the kayle update but not much in the realm of reason or understanding. If a character looks like such and such then he needs to behave like his visuals suggest, if a character has a certain gameplay then he needs to looks like he belongs in a certain role. Thus if kayle's gameplay doesn't match the fantasy of what you'd expect from a knight in full plate then she really can't look like one.
Mark Freaking Rosewater literally talked about this last week.
When Richard Garfield first tested Magic with his playtesters, he made tiny pieces of cardboard (about three inches by one and a half inches) with the text photocopied on them. _Even those earliest playtest cards had pictures on them because Richard understood the very concept I'm explaining now—pictures help convey the flavor and make the game a richer experience. _
This is game design 101 people. Things should pass the eyeball test.
No one wanted Kayle to be an AP bruiser. No one begged riot "please make kayle a tank". The visual looks had to go because if I see someone in full plate, then I'm expecting a certain type of champion. The reworked kayle looks like what a champ with the old kayle gameplay should be. An on-hit AP mage shouldn't be wearing full plate. Now if people played her like a hybrid bruiser paladin then I could see kayle keeping the plate. That's not how people played her.
A typical Kayle build starts like this:
. That's not a tank build. That's not a tank's playstyle. Thus Kayle is not a tank. Since she's not a tank, then she can't look like one because that's basic game design principles.
There's also a second reason riot is justified for changing Kayle's looks. It's pretty simple.
exists. She fills that visual niche and has an appropriate gameplay to match it. If you want full plate Kayle, then you are asking riot to make a leona part 2. No one was asking for leona part 2. Now if there are enough requests, I'm sure riot will consider it. I'd be happy if they did a female bruiser pally for top/jungle.
What riot did makes sense. It follows basic design principles.
