2018 Lore Tournament - 18th December: A Different Hunger vs The Cage

Today, we have our missing story "A Different Hunger". While it was presumably not included in Bioluminescence's original list because the Universe page lists its release date as March 2017, Cetri and Atgo convinced me that it was indeed released in 2018 (alongside "The Eye in the Abyss"), thus making it eligible for this contest.

#2018 Lore Tournament: Day 13 Today, both of our stories focus on abominations, one born, one made. In the first story, A Different Hunger, a group of Freljordian scouts experience a nightmarish encounter with Vel'Koz, who hungers to kill, consume, and learn from everyone he sees. In The Cage, Aatrox hungers for his freedom, cursing his existence inside his blade and searching for a worthy vessel to inhabit.

A Different Hunger by Ian St.Martin A Freljordian scouting group in Tokogol investigates their comrades' silent, empty outpost. However, they soon encounter the outpost's attacker: Vel'Koz, the Eye of the Void, who seeks to consume all the knowledge that these scouts can offer him, all of which can be used to aid the coming of the Void...

The Cage by Odin Shafer Trapped inside the prison of his own sword, Aatrox struggles to find a new vessel who will grasp him and give him breath. Although the Darkin Blade yearns to finally end his existence of eternal imprisonment, for now, his unstoppable will pushes him on to achieve his tragic, brutal goal.

This is a really tough one, because both stories offer such unique perspectives from both of these champions. I have to go with The Cage, because I'll always pick a story that connects more with emotions, plus, it has plenty of angst. I do love some good angst.

However, I see that A Different Hunger has its fans as well, and I can certainly see why. The point of view that this completely alien, all-consuming brain has of our convoluted world is extremely intriguing. I have a feeling that any fan of Cosmic Horror will prefer A Different Hunger. However, I'm just the sort of person who prefers an emotional struggle. So for me, The Cage it is!

I have felt tempted to become a Vel'Koz player many times in my life, but "A Different Hunger" was the final straw. It's such a small marvel, and conveys the theme of the champion so well.

I now spend my evenings pursuing lvl 7 on the void noodle and perfecting the art of pastamancy.

I personnaly chose The Cage, despite my profound love for Vel'Koz and what he represent.

A Different Hunger show perfectly how onimous and monstrous Vel'Koz presence feel, how it work and kill, and especially how Vel'Koz has such different morality than the person he technically kill.

But The Cage show empathy toward Aatrox because the writing show a side of him you don't really get in game, like how desesperate and even scared he was to be trapped forever. How it pain him, how broken he feel, how utterly void his existence is becoming as he can't be himself anymore and centuries of search, emptiness and being trapped made him just crazy, deranged.

I feel "The Cage" make you understand Aatrox and have a sincere empathy toward his pain, it doesn't mean you justify his violence or his past but you get why this guy would be such a dreadfull edgelord willing to scream and reap. You can feel that Aatrox is going to destroy everything in the battlefield after reading this.
