Jax's rework may involve him being deleted

A provocative statement, if there ever was one. Let me elaborate.

Jax essentially has no role in the current lore of League. He has no real backstory aside from being the previous Grandmaster of the League before he upsticks and "vanished" (AKA became Jax). His weapon of choice, a brass lamppost, was in response to Jax being so overpowered with everything else that the League banned him from real weapons (even if at least two skins give him a real polearm to fight with).

None of this applies to the League lore as it currently is, which has changed from being a tournament to settle world politics to stave off another magic nuclear war to a series of different stories told in a grimdarkish world that may or may not be on the verge of an apocalyptic event (almost the premise of 40K limited to one planet). Hell, most of the champions may not actually exist in the present era, if at all (Braum, Twitch, all of the Yordles, and possibly the three god siblings, to name a few).

Jax's character will essentially be remade from the ground up in this environment. At the same time, his brass lamppost may either be done away with, or his story will be written around why his weapon is a brass lamppost. In the current lore of League, where weapons include a shovel, a pocket mirror, feathers, a tongue, a barrel, a door, a wrench, a musical instrument, spit/vomit, plants, rocks, and whatever the fuck Bard has, a brass lamppost doesn't stand out like it used to.

What do you think? How much of current Jax will remain once he gets his inevitable rework?

I doubt Jax will change much. At best, he needs a Visual Update. But his gameplay is pretty solid and his lore makes him one of the most speculated about and interesting characters in league.

Where Icathia Once Stood gave him huge depth as a character in simple nuances, and None Shall Pass was a great reference to real life history, as Jax referenced Benkei the Warrior who defeated 1000 opponents on a bridge and claimed 1000 weapons in medieval Japan.

Jax has never been in a better spot character and gameplay wise. His visuals could use an update, though.

Saijax in the Fall of Icathia was a master of arms, a massive man who carried an axe and used it efficiently, and could also pick up and brutalize anyone with anything he got his hands on.

Something to consider from this - The Fall of Icathia was centuries ago. Shurima was in it's prime when Icathia fell, which means Jax is older than Azir, and has been roaming the world longer than most of the Ascended, and he even predates the Darkin War. After centuries of wandering, and having already mastered most weapons during his life in Icathia, he's probably bored with how easy he can dispatch things with traditional weapons. That alone would be reason enough for him to want to take up something odd and strange like a brass lamp post, as the unbalanced heft and the softer metal of brass would prove difficult for him to fight effectively with, giving him a good challenge.

They could easily tinker with his story to make it fit his current story. But then, I thought the same thing about the Darkin in Varus' old lore, and here they completely erased and replaced it, so do with it what you will.
